Here's an absolutely delicious and easy recipe for homemade tiropita! Tiropita is that Greek feta cheese pie in filo. In this video I'll show you how to make it in just a few simple steps. Make the feta filling. layer the phyllo sheets, bake it off and enjoy!!!!
This tiropita recipe can be enjoyed as an appetizer or as a vegetarian main with a Greek side salad:-))

Opa! Awesome Ken! 2 years on the Isle of Crete while serving in the USAF 1978-1979 loved Greece so much that I converted to Orthodoxy and became a Greek Orthodox Priest with 32 years of Active Ministry.. semi retired now.. Awesome show!

Just an extra tip - before putting the pita in the oven, put some water or milk on the top, it stops the pastry from drying out in the oven, keeps it nice and soft and not too crusty. My yiayia taught me this trick.

Tyropita and Spanakopita are always big hits at the Greek festivals, during the summer (Both are good, but I prefer Tyropita). That goodness just melts in your mouth, when you eat it hot.

I’m not Greek but I go to a Greek school that speaks English (in Australia). Ye I didn’t know how to make this and we had to bring a sample of a Greek Food to school along with the theory stuff Great channel Not only did I wipe off another assignment, I know how to make a delicious dish now! My grandmother would make her own filo dough. I’d watch her as she stretched it out on a chair and aid olive oil and butter. Incredible. She made it look easy. Grandma was a Macedonian Greek while grandpa was a Macedonian Slav. They came from Strumisa. Her Moussaka with eggplant and ground beef was first rate. No one in the family could make better.

Thanks Ken! Here in Australia, I once served up tiropita to a dinner guest, who, upon hearing the word "pie" ( and being an Aussie like me ), asked for the tomato ketchup. Ye gads, you heathen! I told him he didn't need it, but he was pretty insistent. He enjoyed the pie immensely, and then confided in me " I didn't need the ketchup did I?". I replied " No mate, you most certainly did not!"

​@@KensGreekTable ..... Καλό απόγευμα Ken. Thanks for your reply : ) I have been reading a few comments and your replies just to learn a bit more of your style. I read in one reply that you do not advocate the use of ricotta and *definitely* not the use of cottage. Here in Australia, we have great feta, but we pay dearly for it, meanwhile, we have relatively cheap ricotta and cottage. To be honest I will blend feta with one of the other cheeses in equal proportion for economies sake, and use a couple more eggs to bind the softer blend . This blended method is straight out of my Mother's hand written cookbook. This is the only Greek cheese pie that I have ever known. I shall prepare an *authentic* tiropita later in the week and get back to you. Thanks again mate.

How the heck did they used to make filo dough by hand. Now with machines it seems simpler, but back in the day they had to roll it paper thin by themselves. Seems like a lot of work, but it is so worth it. Thanks for this video.

With a broom handle-thin rolling pin, lots of experience and patience. Also, they'd use a rolling surface they could spin to make phyllo making easier, like this one www.homegalaxy.gr/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=4751

@@augustbliss Rhodes is a beautiful small island, stunning in fact. You could get round it by car in a day probably! I love Greece, I've been to a few islands/areas now. Luckily I live in England so it's not too far to travel to Greece for us, couple of hours and I'm there.. 😍🙌 You must visit someday, you won't regret it. Crystal aqua waters, beautiful scenery, great culture, lovely people and wonderful food! What more could you want! 🇬🇷♥️

Buying this as a hot snack in Greece I found the cheese filling is very hot at first so has to be allowed time to cool down before eating (frustrating if one is hungry) but not too long as it gets cold quite quickly. Watched this partly to learn from someone who knows how to pronounce 'Tiropita' correctly Tir-O-pit-ah.

Do u have a great recipe for.. Greek stuff peppers?? My mom made the best!! Unfortunately, she died and I kinda know how. Just wish I knew all the ingredients she used. She also made awesome.. Greek cabbage rolls. She was a great.. Cook, Mom & Yia Yia.. :)

Great recipe!! But I have a question... If you don’t want to use eggs, is there an alternative that you would recommend to use in place of the egg?

Hey Sierra, Thank you for your kind words and question. You can use the non-egg products available at your supermarket or you can do 1-1/2 tbsp. vegetable oil mixed with 1-1/2 tbsp. water and 1 tsp. baking powder per egg. Cheers, Ken🇨🇦

Ken Panagopoulos lol 🤣 ill make this tonight and let you know how I go. I have never made pita believe it or not BUT I reach for it first at parties for that reason. My yiayia from Thraki used to make it extremely special and twirl the filo in to rolls in a round tapsi and then bake it. We would love it ☺️ so since we are isolating now I told my husband Ill make it tonight and see how we go, got all ingredients on hand 😄

Thanks for the great question Cherokee! The main difference is the tyropita is made with a feta egg mixture that’s baked while the feta wrapped in phyllo is straight up cheese and fried.

This is tiropita. Made with feta cheese. Spanakopita is different because you use spinach....

Actually there is such a thing as too much olive oil. Tyropita and any other pita should not be soaked in oil, the fyllo must be relatively dry or otherwise it lies heavy in the stomach and is kind of gross. It's a matter of taste though, just expressing my opinion, you did a very good job in explaining. Χαιρετίσματα από την Ελλάδα!
