If you press your tofu then soak overnight in vegan chicken flavor bullion, then drain, or sprinkle on vegan chicken flavour bullion granuales you get a much better flavor. It works great too with vegan beef flavor bullion. Taste for salt before adding more because the bullion contains salt.

If you have to put so much work into making it taste like chicken why don't you just use real chicken. With save you a lot of time and money and would be better for the environment

Nice video, but quite long though just to express: 1. Break tofu into pieces. 2. Medium heat, add salt, pepper, garlic powder. 3. Stir fry vegetables, add sauce.

CaptnButtonSmash lol...welcome to youtube 😂 In all fairness though, if I hadn't watched the whole process and heard her crunch down on those tofu pieces at the end of the video, I may not have been sufficiently convinced to actually try it this way. There are so many 'ohhh...it tastes just like the real deal' (yeah, sure) vegan recipes out there, it makes this girl a tad bit mistrustful of such claims...

Capt, I appreciate your video condensed comment. It's also nice to see the whole process sometimes. (However, now that I've reached the end of the tofu cooking process of the video and hear she smacks her lips I appreciate your comment even more.) 10 minutes is too fucking long. And again thank you for condensing the video into a comment.

For people who are foodies, you’ll get this description of mine. The tofu after cooking this recipe takes on a thick texture like Japanese あぶらげ aburage. So it does take on the texture of tender chicken pieces. The video is very thorough and helps a lot of people who don’t cook very often. Great video very informative

Freeze the tofu. When you’re ready to cook it, let it thaw, drain the water off of it, pat as dry as you can. Then cook it like you normally do. Freezing the tofu gives it a more chewy texture.

Freezing twice makes the tofu form a better meaty dish. So freeze, thaw in the counter then freeze again and thaw on the counter. Then press dry, get all liquid out that you can, this method is the go to for a more meaty chicken 😁

You don’t need to freeze it twice at all, Vegan nearly 6 years and tried it once where I froze it a second time (read a comment like this on a post a few years ago)... it made literally no change to the texture that the first freezing didn’t already achieve. So yeah, you can skip the second freezing and still get the ‘meatier’ texture 🤗

Loved the video and will definitely try this. Just wanted to point out something though. Just because the label on spray oil says it has no calories or fat, that is usually for a 1/3 second spritz. You sprayed a lot of oil on that pan for around 5 seconds. A one second spray has about 7 calories, 2 seconds has about 14 calories and and 1.5 grams of fat. So what you used on there was somewhere around 35 calories and 4 grams of fat. Not a ton, but still almost as much as 1 tsp of olive oil. I usually just use olive oil and wipe a small amount over the pan with a paper towel just to prevent sticking. Plus, that helps avoid the additives and propellants in the sprays.

I love Tofu, soybeans, soybean drinks, etc. I cook with a lot of Tofu and a necessary ingredient in Pad Thai. I buy soybeans at the Asian market, soak it for a day or 2 and make soy milk. The machines are inexpensive nowadays, and you can buy it on Amazon. I also cook my dog food (you'll be surprised how it inexpensive it is vs. store bought dog food, wet or dry) and they eat soybeans. When I make soy milk, the leftover soybeans are combined with ground beef for their fibers along with any vegetables in the fridge. I pulverized everything in the Ninja blender and cooked it. I do add oatmeal to thicken the dog food and serve! I seal them up in ziplock bags for the freezer, and they are fed daily thawed. How long does it take me? 2-3 hours every 3 weeks. Never had any problems and they have been on it for a few years. No doggy breath and my vet are happy that they are healthy with great coat, teeth, and skin.

@joolesmiles4744
@joolesmiles4744 4 жыл бұрын
Yep - totally with you, Katerina. Freeze, thaw, freeze, thaw, all in the sterile sealed packaging. It really transforms tofu's texture. Ken - you're also totally correct. If there are any bacteria in the food before it is frozen, they will multiply rapidly when the food is defrosted, and it should be cooked thoroughly. However, aseptic food in a sealed package is, by definition, sterile, so there is zero risk of bacterial food poisoning. Do not do this with home made tofu!

Vegan nearly 6 years and once read someone’s comment similar to this so tried double freezing... the second freezing was a waste of time and did nothing to the texture that the first freezing didn’t already do. A great way to make your tofu really taste great and get crispy like chicken is to first cut it up into whatever shape you want. Then coat the tofu in salt, pepper, garlic, and arrow root. Then fry it in oil & turning it until all sides are crispy. The nice thing about this method is that you can coat these in a sauce and they still remain crispy.

Its oil with a bunch of chemicals xD whereas a drizzle of evoo, avocado oil, coconut oil, etc is gonna give u nutrition and flavor! But ok let's focus on the "calories" as we spray what looks like foam sealant all over our pan

I love the simplicity of your instructions. I appreciate no silly humour...thank you. Wonderful technique. A lot of people are suggesting freezing and thawing for meaty texture. I wonder if this would cut the cooking time.

Just made this for the first time and it was amazing! I've been trying to perfect tofu for years and now, thanks to you, I have 😊 I could only get firm tofu (not extra firm) so I cooked it longer. But the result was absolutely perfect. And you're right, those seasonings are perfect for it. Thank you, thank you, thank you 😊 This is so much easier than pressing and freezing it, which is what I have been doing up to this point. Can't thank you enough. Especially since tofu is zero points on the latest weight watchers program 🎉

If you don’t have a whole lot of time, you can cut your prep time by using Gardein Meatless Chick’n Strips. Also, my go-to seasoning to give it a more “chicken-y” flavor is poultry seasoning.

OMG people - make sure to get organic tofu !! Some foods are ok if not organic but soy is all genetically modified and VERY unhealthy if it isn't organic. Organic tofu is very easy to find - Nasoya in the regular supermarkets or Trader Joes. Also, I recommend you use better quality olive oil than Walmart.

It was my first time eating tofu and was debating even eating it. I made it exactly like the video but i divided it into 3 parts after I cooked it. I made an orange chicken sauce for the tofu. A Cajun tofu because I saw someone in the comments did too. I also made teriyaki tofu. I actually really liked all the different types of tofu. I also really liked the crunchy parts you kept picking at too! Thank you!!!

Stephanie White after the frozen tofu is defrosted, (I like to use the microwave) when it's cooked, it has a nice, chewy, almost meaty, texture :)

The stuff that comes in a box, like Mori-nu, will get mushy if frozen. If you freeze regular tofu (the kind in the video), it will have a nice shredded texture. Press it a little before freezing, to remove excess water, which reduces ice crystals.

For me over thirty years ago, I never tried to get tofu to look like chicken; I just fried/cooked to add to recipes. And my "tofu loaf" (which I prepared just like a ground beef meatloaf only using tofu) and mixing the same ingredients, forming into a loaf and baking with potatoes, carrots or mac and cheese was not only delicious to me but to my roommates who would request it. lol Tofu has always gotten "a bad deal". It's not just a watery dollop in Japanese soup; tofu is so versatile I can use it in pretty much whatever I want. Get this....I've used it in Hamburger Helper instead of ground beef; yes and it was just as good. Thanks Jennifer for the frying tips.
