I have done what is called a Double Extraction. Using Tumeric for 1 and Ginger for the other using Extra Virgin Olive Oil in one jar, then in another jar covering my herb root with vodka as in making a tincture. Allowing both 4 weeks till straining day. I strain each into seperate storage bottles but set half of the final product aside from each. I then place the herb root i had strained from into a new jar and add each of the halves together to cover, set aside for another 4 weeks.....i then have a double extraction that is also fat soluable.

Make sure you check out my freebies and information on my monthly membership (both found in the description) if you are venturing into the world of herbalism! Personally I tincture everything separately, but I am clinically trained and do see clients so for my needs this makes the most sense. You could definitely combine them, but you need to ask yourself if you can see their use in multiple different formulations. For example, you can tincture peppermint separately and then it can be used for digestive formulations, nervous system formulations, respiratory cold/cough formulations. It allows for more versatility. Does that help?

Thank you! I am new to this tincture making, (although have used them for many years). I am actually waiting for some from a great herbal company. Question: I was wondering if it is necessary to fill the jar to the very top? Can we leave space, or will that create a problem? Also, is 30% alcohol enough for most tinctures? I ask because there are many ideas about this. A friend told me 40% - 80 proof vodka. And others like it much higher. Any input would be great. I am asking a lot of questions, sorry. I would buy a book if you have one? i really appreciated this video. You are a great teacher. Thanks again!

Hi there! I like to fill as close to the top as possible to avoid oxidation. But it's very much personal preference. I use 30% alcohol and 10% vegetable grade glycerin. That brings the total to 40%. If you are not using glycerin, then yes, you would want 40% alcohol. I have been making tinctures this way for well over a decade and they have served my needs and the needs of my clients very well. And I do have a book! Thanks for asking. You can find it here: amzn.to/4dwHHfi

Thanks so much for video! If I were to add black pepper to it, what would be the proportion? Also, you mentioned 90 grams of turmeric to 450ml of vodka, does this ration work accurately for ounces? Let's say 3oz of turmeric to 15oz vodka to make it 1:5? Lastly, after a week of infusing my tincture has dark colour, not golden orange, is that normal? Thanks a lot, I learned a bunch!
@SpiraeaHerbs
@SpiraeaHerbs 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there. I have never added black pepper, but I would think just a few peppercorns would do the trick (thinking about when I cook with turmeric and only have to add a few cracks of pepper to help make it more bioavailable). I use 87 grams for a 500ml bottle (which I believe is a pint in the US?) 87 grams when converted is just over 3 ounces I believe. If it is really dark it is possible it has oxidized. A certain amount of colour change is totally normal. Hope that helps!
@nurturhealth4860
@nurturhealth4860 2 жыл бұрын

@SpiraeaHerbs
@SpiraeaHerbs Жыл бұрын
You could do that for sure. I personally like the synergistic combination of turmeric and ginger to help make it more bioavailable, but both are viable. My only caution would be taking it straight without blending it in a formula for arthritis. Due to its heat and pungency it might cause irritation if taken for longer periods of time.

This is what we would call a catalyst in formulations. In addition to its amazing anti-inflammatory properties, its pungency helps to drive constituents where we need them to go in the body. You would never take it alone as it would be far too hot. So it would be used as apart of a formulation. And I've been using turmeric tincture for many many years and I've never noticed any staining. But again, you aren't taking it straight.

The alternative would be to look into acidics (apple cider vinegar extractions).

I think a good question you could ask yourself is if you plan on working with herbs in formulation. Turmeric's pungency makes it a hard plant to work with as a simple (taking it alone) so I tend to only use it with other plants. It then acts as the main anti-inflammatory and circulatory stimulant in a formula. Hope that helps you decide!

@SpiraeaHerbs
@SpiraeaHerbs 2 жыл бұрын
There are lots of different methods for tincture making. Some people vary the menstruum depending on which plant they tincture (varying alcohol percentages). I do not do this. My menstruum (which is premade before I make my medicine) is 30% alcohol, 10% vegetable grade glycerin and 60% spring water. I have used this for over a decade now and have excellent results with my tinctures. If you do not include glycerin, you would want to increase the alcohol to 40%. Watering it down afterwards is not the route I would go personally. I would add water to my alcohol before making the tincture. But again that is just my preference and there are many herbalists who do things in a variety of different ways! Hope that helps clarify.

I never use straight turmeric or ginger tincture alone. The pungency, when taken over longer periods of time would cause gut irritation for sure. However I use them together as a catalyst (a way of driving constituents to tissues throughout the body) all the time. My favourite combination to start with is 5% ginger and 10% turmeric. You would then have other herbs make up the remaining 85%. If you have a higher tolerance for heat you could go 5% ginger and 15% turmeric. Hope that helps!

I completely understand your frustration. And the reason why we don't state it is because that is considered the rendering of specific health advice which is illegal and prohibited by Health Canada. On a monitored platform such as this... not worth the risk unfortunately. So we can teach you how to make the medicine, but you'll have to do a bit of legwork to figure out dosing. What I can state is that its low doses. Think therapeutic in nature. For chronic health conditions 3x a day kind of thing. I would not take turmeric on its own because its too pungent. I tend to use it in formulation with other herbs.

They sell tinctures in health food stores and in my local farmers market. And right on the teeny little bottles that they sell, they tell you the dosage. So the dosage information is out there. You little dropper falls why can’t you tell us about dosages it doesn’t make sense. It’s not like it’s a big secret. Some laws are so ridiculous. It’s really the medical industry. They don’t want you to be healthy so they try to block any information from healthcare professionals because they feel intimidated. And that’s really what it is so they make up all the laws so they could pump you up with the chemicals instead. Which are very bad for you anyway because our bodies, humans or animals were not designed to take chemicals that could poison us. They need to get with the program step up to the plate and stuff poisoning, humanity and wildlife and the environment.

The tinctures that make it to market like that have NHPNs here in Canada. That is the only legal way to do it and it's very very very expensive. It's entirely cost prohibitive for a small scale herbalist to afford them. And I agree... it feels very much by design. It's frustrating for sure. Thankfully I can teach my students about dosing which is why I am so passionate about teaching. Get that information out there as much as I can!
