Hey! I'm here, I took a little holiday for a couple of days while the weather was nice, but I dunno if you saw me on Tabletop Time while I was gone, KINDA SICK.
@hellboy74243 ай бұрын
No dude, that's not cheating. In art history it is called economy in creation. And it has been done forever. Taking things and transforming them into something different and their own has been done by even the best-known painters and sculptors. From Leonardo and Michelangelo, to current artists. Only one thing comes out of "nothing": nothing.

A reminder that museums also have very high quality scans and photos of art that is public domain and easily available online. You can take some of those (especially woodcuts), chop them up and mix and match in your own banners. Love your art, Trent. This is the best hobby channel on KZbin by far.

Fun fact: WD scans exist on the internet and colour printers exist. So, if you don't want to cut up your old issues, maybe just print that image straight onto card. If you don't own a printer, get your local photography or printers to print it for you. Or you can simply place a bit of thin paper over your screen, gently tape it down and use a pencil (if you use a pen it might bleed through the paper on to your skeen) to gently trace the image (don't press hard on your screen you could damage a pixel on certain screens). Then you can outline it in pen and paint in the rest with any paints. Then cut it out and stick it to something thicker for your banner. Thin metal (file the edges so they aren't sharp!) is actually a really good idea as it means you can bend the banner into shape and it won't rip. Drinks cans, thick foil, the tops of coffee/coco containers are all easy places to find cheap metal sheeting. Again, file the sides and be really, really careful when cutting up sheet metal as its really easy to cut yourself open if you aren't careful. Your hobby isn't worth a trip to hospital! Sorry if you bring any of these ideas up in this video. I'm only 2 mins in. 😅 Edit: dump typos.

I used to use this method for my banners and flags, but I found that it was too static for my liking, so instead what I do is I print my design on ever so slightly thinner paper, and I dip the whole thing in slightly watered down modpodge. Then I can pose it on the stick and make some really dynamic minis. If the modpodge doesnt solidify it enough, I quite literally just put some super glue on it, which sort of weathers it and makes it into a really hard shell type of thing. Anyways, great video as per usual!

If you want to print out existing artwork for your banner, you could run it through image editing software first. There are plenty of filters for increasing the contrast and such to the point images look like coloring book pages. Which is very useful for then tinting with transparent paints, as shown at 8:40. You're still stealing, but in a transformative way. Not unlike kitbashing, really, but with 2d images and color.

there's an image transfer process in woodworking that may work with minis. if you laser print an image on the glossy backing sheet from a label, then put matt mod podge on the surface you want the image on, then carefully rest the label sheet on top. the toner will bind with the mod podge to adhere to the surface. for minis you may need to varnish after

Make color photocopies of your original artwork, or magazine/book pages, preserving the original artwork. I would paint Minwax Polyshades urethane stain (a dark brown color) onto the banner to age it, but when the urethane dries, it will also protect it -- this stuff is used to coat wooden floors people walk upon with rubber soled shoes! It ages it, it makes it look battle worn, and dirty, like it has been in a fight. Easy-peasy! Hit it with a matte clear coat to dull the shine, of course. Cheers!

My first standard bearer from, checks notes... 30 years ago, for my blood angels in 2ed was made from a spare RTB01 marine, some round sprue from a Tamiya tank kit, and a banner just straight up photocopied from the 2ed rulebook on a convenience store photocopier. I colored it in with colored pencils and roughed up the sides with a cigarette lighter then stuck it on the pole. I hardly ever use it, but still have it.

Fun idea, I though you were going to do a heat transfer at first when you showed the images from the magazines. If i remember correctly you just put glue on the printed side and then put it on whatever you want to transfer it to and run an iron (might also work with a hairblower or a heatgun) over it for a bit and then take a wet/damp rag and gently rub away the paper which will leave only the paint from the print left on top of the objects surface.

I use a similar technique for standards on historical armies. Albeit not cutting out of my books, but searching on-line for the image, lasar printing it out and then over-painting to improve image sharpness and saturation. Often need to add gold and silver metalic paint as my printer does not have these colours.

But a much cheaper option than drinking yourself to death is aluminium foil ducting tape. You can cut it easily, but edge-burning has to be done before sticking it to the tape, obviously.
