You have such a knack for decorating, Susan! I love that you do it on a budget! I told my kids that probably 90 percent of everything I have in my home is from garage sales or thrift stores, so if anything ever happens to me they can just get a dumpster and throw it all in there.... probably wouldn't amount to over a few hundred bucks for the entire household! Many years ago, when I was perhaps 19-20, I saw photographs of renown pianist Peter Duchin's NY loft - specifically, his home library where he also served his guests dinner. As a writer, I have always loved that concept and found it particularly intimate and romantic. A combination library/dining room. It's very "Harvard hall looking." I currently have a dining room that is bordered by bookshelves with a chandelier in the center. There are also black and white photos of me from my dance company days, too. So, I would say that that room is more important to me for guests than my living room.

I love decorating - but I do it to please myself.I rarely have guests, but when I do, they always comment on my unique style. Your home expresses you perfectly! My home is filled with older pieces from family, also some modern and lots of interesting art. Eclectic is probably the best way to describe it.

Sometime ago I heard someone say "My house is clean enough to be healthy and messy enough to relax". I like that and with raising 5 children I was helped by that thought! Now that they are gone and I am widowed I have come into my own when it comes to decorating. When I bought my last condo I choose very neutral tones of beige to desert and adobe shades. My sofas already were off white linen and it has been very satisfying bringing it to where it is now... I have lovely light and great flow. I am happy but do continue to go for the 'clean/messy' thing! I try to use good thrift shops for great finds in natural fibers and wood and stone... My favourite mirror I purchased new for a great price but the colour was horrid ... the frame was fantastic elaborate cuttings and the bevel just set it off. My son spray painted it with 3 or 4 cans of very off white ... Yes... to bring out your own personality, comfort for friends and visitors .

Love the advice to decorate for yourself ! It’s easy for me to get caught up in the anxiety of what people will think .. especially when I have such unique taste . But who cares ! I had some movers moving my stuff to my house the other day and my everyday objects entertained them immensely! They saw paintings that I painted and it was a conversation starter . As well, all my nerdy stuff was on display which I can get nervous about . But, they seemed to be entertained by all my dolls that I collect . Be proud of your style !

I love your home. I also understand the pain and hurt about where i lived, and nothing you can do about it, I also had that in the past. When I visit people, I am there for them, not to judge anyone because of that. Now I am a widow for 2 years and have done over every room in the house. Agree!! Very homey and warm! I also feel, when all of life fails us, at least I have God in my life. It's written somewhere that pride is a sin....NEVER try to keep up with the Jones' lifestyle or decorate for others to impress. You are a lovely woman and have beautiful taste. I'm happy to see you adopt to a love affair with home decor now. I have worked in home decor for 26 years and still am obsessed with alllllll the pretty things and design layouts out there! My approach to it all is thru an artists eye because that's how I was raised. My dad taught me how to paint and draw in his studio in our basement, the whole family selling his paintings out of a van at Woodstock (I was 3 yrs old lol), sunday trips to museums with dad, art books of my father's favorite period (renaissance) on our coffee table , my mom with beautiful decorating taste, steel sculptures thru-out our home because my dad was a welder by trade.......and so much more influence growing up that I carried it with me learning a love for art history and the interior decor world as a hobby and profession! I don't have any money but I can make a shack look beautiful lol ....my entire little home is my sanctuary

My style I would say is eclectic. I have filled my home with all sorts of items I love. All were thrifted. My bed is a wrought iron bed from the 1800's that I absolutely love.

I decorate for me as well. I have lived in several places in the last 25 years, all rather different. However, I see that greens and earth tones predominate. I prefer using vintage oak pieces and cherry. And baskets and pottery. Much of what you said in this video also reflects me.

Desi has the sweetest smile! My home has thrifted items, new and recovered purchases, and lovely French antiques. I guess you could call my style “rustic elegance.” I love mixing different elements. Wood pieces with a worn, patina mixed with textured white sofas and chairs are basics and I add color and interest with pillows, art and accessories. One of my favorite sets of dishes came from a thrift store and had been used by an officer’s wife when they were stationed in Germany. My garden is also part of my decorating-either seeing it through the windows or enjoying cut flowers and foliage inside. This was a lovely video; thank you.

I have been watching videos about decorating styles and just today I discovered the Grand Millennium style. Which is how I found your channel. You have showed the true essesess of the new emerging style in a the way that it makes sense to me. I know for me I will do it a little more on minimalist side however, cozy comfort is must. I like to decorate with unusual finds at thrift shops. I found a beautiful silk Oriental wall-hanging -- watercolor, singed by the artist -- which is peaceful and lovely to look at -- at a thrift shop. It was hanging up, and it seemed like no one else noticed it. When shopping, I always try to look above and below eye-level, and have found some wonderful things. Like a bust of Christ in marble-like material...for $3.00! So, it may seem "eclectic" to some, but somehow, it all comes together. You're right -- decorate for YOU and your lifestyle -- and it will always be "one-of-a-kind"! Have fun!

Our homes should reflect who we are and make us happy. I think it's interesting that the most sucessful and well know in the design world do as you suggest. Michigan IS a beautiful place to live. As I've told you, I'm a Grand Rapids native...born and raised. I'm transitioning back to my home state from living in Kentucky for almost 16 yrs. We sold our house in Kentucky and as I type this we're living in a townhouse in Bowling Green, KY waiting for the builder to finish renovating our little bungalow in Ionia, MI. My husband found a nice job in his field at Hayworth and we'll be moving to Ionia in Sept...I can't wait to be home in Michigan.

i decorate to impress me... my soul, my peace ...the world according to me. I love when the sun goes down and all my little lamps and candles are glowing. I love mirrors, especially with a small lamp reflected in it. I collect old blue and white dishes, tarnished silver trays and candlesticks and wood cutting boards. It is so visually cozy and charming to me. I am 70, live alone and would just love to walk through that beautiful little oasis of the water and rocks and gazebo. I can feel the cool water on my feet as I sit on a rock and enjoy the tranquility. You are very blessed to live in such a beautiful area. You deserve it . Have a happy , peaceful day.

Decorate so people feel warm and cozy when they enter your home. That's how I want people to feel when they enter my home. Then they can look around and notice the "nice stuff"! I love buying things from the thrift store! I find so many nice things that belonged to someone else first! My bedroom is just my style for me. It is pink, rose, blue and green. I use beautiful vases filled with Rose's and a lovely rose covered quilt over my dusty pink bedspread. It's very feminine and my husband doesn't mind a bit!

Someone once told me my home was cozy. I thanked her, despite doubting her intentions. Our home is decorated with a mix of inherited and thrifted treasures people want to look at. Cozy is better than big, ostentatious or expensive. For my family, cozy is cool!

When we added on to our house, I got my dream: a library! A wonderful place for all my books, art, and mementos. So many family Christmases, Father's Days, and birthdays, found everyone gravitating there, attracted to the Old World style, and comfort! If newbies ever remark that we are in the 'family room', my husband corrects them, "It's Susan's library!". Even my precious poodle spends her time in there, napping on the cool marble of the hearth in summer, or there by the fire in winter.

Susan, your home is decorated exactly to my taste too. I absolutely love it. Your guests must walk in the door and say "ooh" and "aah" immediately. I especially love the way you decorated your living room for summer. Those colors are gorgeous. You don't need to spend a lot of money, you have a special talent, a gift. Most of my things are inherited from my great-grandmother, my grandmother and my mother so I just found ways to use them and cherish the memory of the ladies to whom those items were important, like my great-grandfather's dresser and mirror. I picture him, my great-grandmother, my grandmother and her brother looking in that mirror that I now look into and I am filled with peace. I feel as if they would appreciate the fact that something they valued was cared for and is now valued by others, me, and hopefully my grandchildren. I tweeted out the request to have people vote for Desi. I hope he wins. Both of you deserve the recognition for being so magnificent. Hugs to you both.

I have purchased a couple of high end throw pillows from Goodwill before. As long as I can remove the cover and wash it then I throw the insert away and buy new insert. I don’t think there is anything wrong with that.

I have thrifted quite a bit of pillows and bedding. Washed and steamed and stitched if need be and it’s brand new again!! You just keep doing you☺️✌️

These are my favorite videos of yours, the home decorating videos. I always find myself looking at your decor even when the video isn’t about that. Your style is very boho, and I love it. I am just discovering this past year during the Covid lockdown that I have been decorating my home to impress my guests instead of choosing things that make me happy. I’m slowly but surely making my home a reflection of myself and my husband, and it feels so much more authentic when I decorate that way.

You are truly a lovely lady with a desire to share with other women, in hopes of making them feel their best. You have been through a lot and have acquired much knowledge from your many challanges, yet your smile reflects you are happy in your skin. I am so happy that you found your pretty apartment. I loved this video and your style. I believe it follows my way, I am surrounded by things that are unique and meaningful to me. I do have moments when I wonder if I'm old fashioned or out of step...but whenever someone tours my home it takes time ss there is a story behind 90 percent of my treasures. Our home was brand new when we moved Into it and I thought how wonderful, but I was miserable, until I added me. Some new, but items that were my family's, my own crafted items and now my own art. It makes me happy, but most of all my husband loves it, enough that when on holidays he is willing to let me take away more items from our home to our vacation spot. The highest complement is when I'm done he says " oh, this smells like home." Corny? Anyhow Susan I love love love your apartment.

Susan, your apartment always looks so cozy and lovely to me, although I’ve never thought it looked expensive. I mean, I never thought it looked inexpensive either. It doesn’t make me think about money at all because that’s not what it communicates. It communicates good taste and an artful eye, and comfort. I told you once that watching your video reminds me of looking in windows of homes just after dark has fallen, before the curtains are closed, and you see people moving about their homes in lamplight. There is a feeling of safety, well-being, and yes…love. A feeling that all is well.

Thank you for this video❤️ As I look around the living room of my apartment, I’d say it’s 99% thrifted. What was not thrifted, I’ve have a very long time. My most cherished item is a “Pearl Beer” neon clock that my parents had in our restaurant on Padre Island Texas back in the 1950’s. Still keeps perfect time. I’d say my style is memories and eclectic thrown together. My greatest complaint came from my son. He had been out of the USMC for about a year and living with his wife in a nearby town. He had come over to help me with something and as he was sitting on the couch he said “It feels good, it just feels like home” ❤️

This is so special to hear your story. How many sons say "it feels like home". After they have grown up they are usually pretty vested in thier own life. It is very clear his memories of home were beautiful. When you think about that, mom's are the decorators of our home as well as decorators of childrens lives. Your decor must have been priceless to receive a compliment like that.

I love the mirror tips. I have them throughout the house and want one large thin one for the landing in the staircase. I love how cozy your apartment feels. My house is pretty cozy too... After my divorce I had a ton of furniture to fit into a small 2 bedroom house, so I made the most of it. I love being tucked in around the beautiful things I collected through the years. Beauty touches me in a visceral way. It is almost weird. If I see something that does not look pleasant to me, I literally get a gag reflex. Is that weird? Anyway, I love all the layers in your apartment. And I'm a plant person so the views of the courtyard you showed are breathtaking. Hugs from Texas, where summer is not our favorite season. LOL
