I also think it's important that you get at lesst 2 kittens. Contrary to popular belief, cats get very lonely and are happier when they have one of their own kind to play with. This is especially important if you're away from the house furing the day. And never hit a kitten.

For the first time in 24 years i am without a furbaby in my home, since my 10 yr old male cat passed a month ago. He was the love of my heart, my everything. We rescued a little black kitten a couple of years ago. He's very sweet affectionate and loving. However, he is still scared to death of people he doesn't know he runs away from them if they try to approach him. Also, he is terrified by loud and or sudden noises and he always runs and hides in our bedroom and he'll stay there for hours.

GOOD advice. I would add: take your new kitten to the vet for a checkup. Make sure they get the required shots. Also determine beforehand if your cat will be an indoor or outdoor cat. Our cats are indoor because it is safer where we live. We play with them frequently so they get exercise.

After that first trip to the vet make sure to get health insurance on him/her. If you wait too long some health issues can pop up that the insurance co will consider pre-existing and your rates will be much higher or they will put a rider in the policy that they wont pay for any treatments connected to that issue. I had an older cat i got insurance for long before any health issues and when we adopted a six month old male kitten i had planned to add him to the insurance but i procrastinated too long (my focus back then was my bad hip & subsequent hip replacement surgery). I had taken him to the vet to be checked over and he was fine. THATS when i should have gotten his insurance asap. . . He was way too aggressive with the older cat & had other issues (like peeing ALL OVER the apt). Everyone kept saying once he got fixed it would help, so i got his appointment for getting him fixed. The vet wanted to do one more exam to make sure he was ok for the surgery, however he had developed a hole in his heart/heart murmur and couldnt have the surgery. She scheduled an appt with a cat cardiologist who wanted over $900 just to walk in the door 😱 With all the other added expenses there simply was no way i could afford that with my tiny ss check. If i had gotten insurance early on he could have gotten the treatments he needed. He lived 3 more months, exactly one year to the day we adopted him. One night they both had the zoomies and he jumped up on a table & when he jumped down he died in midair and was dead when he hit the floor. He was just a baby, 18 months old. My heart shattered with grief. He will forever & always be my sweet BabyBuddy.

My kitten loves me to the point of rubbing his body all over my face when I recline. With hubby, he gets ignored and only likes him for butt scratches and food. I left him to his own devices and gave him soft love and affection as well as protected him fiercely when one of the other cats injured his leg. Hubby had kinda manhandled him from the carrier to get a good look at him. After a while he got close enough to scratch his butt and he still comes back to him for that, so I guess he doesn't hate him... but rather is wary of him.
