So true - the greatest riff on earth without the right beat underneath it at the best tempo won't ever be what it could be. Sad but true was originally a lot quicker, Hetfield dropped the tempo and it became iconic.

Do you program drums yourself or use some pre made midi beats? I've been trying to spice up my song writing but i only know how to program a few beats which learning to do that helped me understand how drums work a lot better and what riffs sound good with different beats but now I'm sort of in a rut where i don't know how to program more interesting beats except just trial and error and no one really teaches how to program different beats for guitar players it's always just buy a midi pack or something

I do both. The software i use also allows you to import riffs and it analyzes them and suggests beats for you

Learn other genres like Jazz and Bluegrass also look for inspiration I look at my hounds when I am hunting them I have made some amazing riffs off watching them work
