Scribing or re-scribing panel lines on scale models can be a tricky thing. If you try to do it with a blunt scalpel, you will muck it up (trust me, I know!). But with this cheap tool you can easily make for $2, you will be able to re-scribe panel lines on scale model aircraft and vehicles easily, accurately and quickly. Gives you accurate control of where you want the scribed line to go - if you can draw a line with a pencil, you can do it with this tool!

I simply turn over a #11 blade opposite the cutting side, then point it sharply "down" into the line and pull gently. It digs a nice sharp line, and you have very precise control. I don't even have to invent another tool for scribing.

Back in the 90s kids at school did this to scratch into the wooden desks to tag their gang or tagging crew names. They also sliced two different color sakura markers in half, pressed halves of each of the two colors together to remake a marker that now had two colors and tag giving a cool effect of the two colors

That’s a great tip Dave, if you grind/sand the pin tip to about 45 degrees you’ll have a scribing chisel the will give flat bottomed panel lines rather than V profiled grooves.

Nice one, Dave. I "invented" this myself, when I couldn't afford a scriber, and it works well. One tip, though: you mentioned using Dymo tape as a guide line - that will work fine on the plain kit surface, but the adhesive will likely pull any paint or primer right off. I speak from bitter experience :-)

Thanks Nitramyar - good to know and learn that without having to suffer the pain myself.

Use 3m "Green Tape", it has a special tack to its sticky side that wont harm most paints, or if you like, wait a couple days till your paint has hardened and most tapes won't harm them. If your primer is pulling off, then either A) the primer is crap latex, or B) the surface has not been degreased and the factory mold release is still present.

Just found your channel on Pinterest. Found you hear on you here on KZbin and subscribed. I've been planning on buying one of those scribbing tools. You just saved me 17 dollars. I'm much obliged to ya for that bit of information. I've already got those materials. Thanks Dave.

Thanks for the ideas! Made my own scriber as shown and brought my flexible curved ruler, all for £14. Very pleased. Luckily for me I have a local Boyes shop, so handy and cheap.

That's a great idea. So I've already learned something new today. The dressmaking thingy, was originally called a "flexible curve" used in drafting back years ago when I started taking classes in College. My wife has one like that one with the rule on it for quilting. Very useful tool. The drafting version didn't have a rule, and didn't need one. Very good video. Thanks for this one. I've got a drawer full of those mechanical pencils of all sizes. Regards, Solomon

Dave, I've learned that if we live long enough, we discover that a lot of old ideas get recycled for new uses. It keeps us on our toes...LOL!

Hi Dave, Regarding tape for those wanting to spend a little bit of money is a Japanese product called Hi Q carving tape, 3mm & 6mm wide is supposed to be better than Dymo tape. Will Paterson recommended it and can be ordered through BNA although they are out of stock now. Otherwise Hobby World - USA or eBay maybe. Do a Google search it will come up. A great tip regarding the scribes. 🍻Graham

Dave, your channel is very refreshing. Wished I had come across your channel earlier. Very informative and lots of great DIY ideas mixed with some great effort and thoughts. I am motivated now to do my models at a much slower pace with and eye for detail. Thank you so much. A fan from Malaysia...

Very interesting, Dave. In the dim and distant past, I've used a pin vice with a pin in it, (surprisingly!), and also an engineer's pocket scribe, brought when I worked in an ironmongers back in the 70s or 80s. (I realise that this aimed at cheapness, but it's surprising now often we/me overlook the obvious!! Or in your case; the not so obvious! 😀Also, would a dart or panel pin do the same job, I wonder?
@DavesModelWorkshop
@DavesModelWorkshop 6 жыл бұрын
You'd struggle with a pin just because it's tough to hold and manipulate easily. The dart, however, is a GREAT idea! It would be perfect! Love it :)

I go the cheap route on everything else in life so I can spring for the finest of all model supplies. My Trumpeter panel line scriber is triangular to widen and deepen. Do believe it will last the rest of my life, but I may outlive that ghetto scriber.

I dont have a mechanical pencil here, but I do have a pins similar to the ones you use and a couple of old pens that dont write or an empty shell, would it be jolly to use those pen as a substitute to the mechanical pencil? Also innovative idea

@@DavesModelWorkshop I hope so too, and also it could work with sewing needles that are hooked at its end, and also an ordinary straight sewing needles that are its tip just bent in shape (creating a claw type scribe) could be possible
