I am in the early stages of trying to save myself some money and making my own shrimp food! This is version one, a simple floating plant food. Will my shrimp like it? Watch and see!

You could add some egg shells to the blended mix and make some calcium rich food

Thanks, did not know you could use floaters other than duckweed. When I make this I add bee pollen, a bit of clay and often a calcium source.

I have seen some people be hesitant to use frogbit but I couldn't see a reason not to. I am working on v2 and v3 of this right now, just trying to find sources for stuff.

I think not only shrimp and snails will eat this but also small fish.

When harvesting, squeeze out the water FIRST...!, YOU CAN grind/blend immediately, or freeze to use later... And dry, any way you like... Or, use for compost...

I like the freezing process, ensures it's broken down more.

Nicely done! That’s how I dehydrated stuff before I got a real dehydrator! Shrimp food was one that I actually just started dehydrating just by leaving it out on the counter for a day or two!

Could you do this with Elodea, or any fast growing aquarium plant? Or do Floater plants have better nutrition? I've got a ton growing and don't wanna just throw it away.

Some MIGHT be toxic, do a little google search before doing anything but you should probably be fine.

We've got the same oven as you and it should have an actual dehydrator feature, mine works great, although I cant remember how to get there. You could probably look it up

Wait, really?! That's cool. Thanks for this, I will do some research! I actually just got a Ninja Air Fryer with a dehydrate function as well, gonna run some tests and see how that does.

Can i use water lettuce to make shrimp food
@BobMossNanoTanks
@BobMossNanoTanks 3 жыл бұрын
100%! All floaters work as a base, they do vary in nutritional value but water lettuce is one of the better ones for sure.

Is freezing a necessary step? Cant I just take my duckweed, water spangles, frogbit etc and toss it into the blender or whatever fresh and then dehydrate it?
@BobMossNanoTanks
@BobMossNanoTanks 3 жыл бұрын
Good question. I don't think it's NECESSARY, but it helps to break down the plant and the cell walls so the shrimps will eat it faster. They don't eat living plants, after all.

Why dont you just dehydrate it outside immediately after harvesting then finely crumble the dried product. No dehydrator or oven required!

It helps break down the cell walls. Shrimp don't want to eat live plants so this ensures they're good and dead lol.
