Cakes look so good. I do the magic knot as I cake them so I don’t have to weave in any ends. I made the just festive shawl out of left over yarn I caked up. I love it.

I love my yarn winder! It makes it easier to crochet from a center pull, and it makes it easier to store them. You don't have loose ends oh half used skeins laying around to tangle up. Now that I have it I always cake up my skeins before using them. I now have literally hundreds of cakes of neat and tidy yarns! It is a lot of fun to make them too.

I had a cheaper yarn winder the arm never stayed up kept slipping and tangled the cakes, brought this from your link, on the last video.it arrives this morning, it's perfect wound a few cakes no problems, very happy with it nice and sturdy, now I'm off to make some multi coloured cakes after watching this, love the Facebook group xx

I have had my yarn winder for 20 years and go through stages of winding everything, I also got the idea of making my own yarn cakes so how much you can suddenly get into the wool winding craze, I have even got a spare wool winder in my cupboard in case mine gives up on me, I can’t be without it lol

I love using my yarn winder. I had an enormous stash of yarn which I had purchased from a yarn manufacturer warehouse. They were like "mill ends" and they were maybe a tenth the cost. It took me months to wind them all. I ended up selling them at a craft fair. I thought I would start selling them at different fairs but as it worked out I sold my entire lot at just one fair.

I noticed you make a simple knot when joining colors when making the cake. Is there anything special you do when crocheting and you come to one of those knots?

I just crochet over them and let the ends hang out… i then use a needle and weave them into the fabric… more work I know but I do not trust russian knots! Hope this helps! Anja xxx

I have a small cheapwinder but I dont like it. I have always wound my own yarn. In 1976, I met a Catholic Nun in the hospital where my Dad was a patient. I had never wound one to pull from the middle. She saw me crocheting and came in to talk. She showed me how to make them pull from the middle. Have been doing it that way ever since. She also told me a pattern for an afghan. It is simular to the Apache Tears stitch, but I think her way was prettier. Anyway, I have started making my yarn into cake shape and not just a round ball. Usually looks better than what my winder does.
