If your snake hisses and tries to bite you it's probably because it's scared! This is what we do with a baby snake when it's super defensive.

Did u guys see that as soon as Kevin said, “ Hi buddy”, the snake stopped hissing and immediately started tongue flicking. (Around the 3.40). So cool to see the moment when their brain kicks in. Very beautiful boas too. Thanks Donny and Kevin. Glad ur feeling better.

I adopt a baby common boa, the ex-owner wants to get rid of it because it is too hizzy and nippy, strange enough it never land a single bite on me although tons of hizz in the begining, she becomes one of the sweetest boas in my collection after a year, handling and approaching snakes is super important and Kevin is doing the best example on this video! I did learn a lot of things from NERDS, thank you Kevin :)

The meanest non venomous snakes I ever met were tree boas. They didn't hiss to tell you they were mad, they just bite and bite again. I was told they are good display snakes. Build them a nice vertical enclosure with plants and branches. Give them water and food and they'll be happy as long as you don't try to handle them.

Kevin, I'm glad you're feeling better. I love these types of videos. They're so helpful for new and seasoned snake owners. I learned a long time ago for ball pythons that if you cup over their heads when they're being defensive, it resets their brain a bit and typically stops the defensive response, allowing you to pick them up and create those threads of trust. I've never tried it on another species of snake. Do you think that would work on something like a boa or a larger python too? For clarification here, I mean make a little cave with your hand and quickly move it over their head, not hurting or pinning them or anything. There's a video on KZbin of a breeder doing this, but I can't link it and don't remember the uploader off the top of my head.

Per usual, I cannot get enough of Kevin geeking out over these beautiful breathtaking snakes. His knowledge is boundless and I am grateful that he's sharing it with us mere mortals 😆 I feel for snakes 🐍 Just imagine these giant meat suits standing or sitting over you and have these big old meat claws reaching out to you to pick ya up. That's scary and I'd definitely bite too. Snakes have no hands, no feet or the power and strength 💪 to defend themselves against a human. Glad Kevin feels better and glad he was able to calm down little pinky pooh (I named her that) Horses are awesome, very elegant, classy animals who have the power to heal us humans. They're amazing therapists, listeners and friends ❤ We ALL should hug a horse or 2 every now and then 🤗 I'm wishing everyone at NERD a very merry Christmas 🎅 🎄 And everyone who reads this comment as well 😀

As someone who has the pleasure of having a horse as a friend I cannot agree more wholeheartedly. SKIP IF YOU DONT LIKE SPIDERS Also Tarantulas are THE ABSOLUTE BEST listeners, I talk to all 8 of mine every day and 1 even knows my voice/vibrational pattern and she loves to visit me and receive a nice pet through the plastic. Seriously those tarantula keepers that keep 100s and say "They don't have the capacity to love" honestly make me sick. If you kept 100 Ball Pythons and never open the enclosure unless its to feed how are you suppose to get to know them? All 8 of mine have different personalities and I know each one of their quirks and preferences. Keepers lose tarantulas everyday and think nothing more then "well shit that was expensive" or "Doesn't matter wasn't planning to do anything with it" YES they sometimes call them IT, like they are collectible figurines! Its like they are addicted to Tarantulas and don't realize they are actually ALIVE! Sorry for the small rant OP but if anyone reads this I want them to know not to hang on every word a tarantula YT says like I did. They have no basis for what they say, its just their opinion but they state it like its a fact when there have been barely any studies on Theraphosids (Tarantulas), they are actually one of the least studied species in all of entomology (the study of insects and the like). Oh and sorry if your not a fan of spiders, I was an arachnophobe a year ago so I get it, couldn't even watch a spider on TV! Never scared of the big ones only the small ones oddly, but eventually I got sick of being scared of something that isn't even a threat! (Not in canada at least) Anyway Happy Holidays from a spider geek!

@@katiekane5247 I've been kicked (so bad I cant put any pressure on my knees still 7 years later, by a mini no less!). Got over 20 kicks from that dude in a row, It was his persons fault not his, he was in a bad situation. Bitten (shoulder yanked out of socket, by my own girl, again bad situation, its NEVER the horses fault). Among others by horses and can safely say I would prefer a bite from a BP 100%! Even a BOA would be a better option to me! Now I don't have a BP yet (researched the heck out of them) but in the next 1-2 years I'm hoping to get a BEL and name her Valkyrie! I hope your having a great time of year, and that 2023 gets even better!

Just wanted to thank y'all for this vid. I've got a 20 year old corn snake who I've had for most of my life and she is the absolute sweetheart. But when I finally decided I was ready for a second snake, the young blizzard corn snake I bought was very defensive and aggressive, biting me and even striking at the glass of her enclosure. It's been so long since Ive had a young snake, I would always instinctively just put her back quick as possible and hoped she would warm up to me. Yesterday I got her out, accepting that I would get bit as always right off the bat, and after a minute or so of her trying to slither out of my hands she finally calmed down and I was able to gently rub her until she calmed down and he tongue starting making longer flicks. I'm finally able to actually bond with my snake thanks to y'all.

I have a normal male ball python that I took in that was neglected and improperly kept, wrong bedding, no humidity, etc, for God knows how long, somewhere around 6-8 years is the best guess I was given, so that's what I have to go off of. It was also only ever fed live rats, so it has deformed scales, scarring, spots where the scales healed incorrectly and have formed little mounds with holes all the way through. Poor guy has been through a lot and I've only had him for about 6 weeks, but he's eating just fine, he's shedding better, he's had iodide bath treatments to make sure there's no infections and an upgraded tank so he has a lot more space. He was very huffy and defensive when I got him, he's only struck defensively once and that was after I had just given him a rodent so he was just defending his food from the strange intruder, but he didn't hit me, just tried to scare me away lol. But he's a little sweetheart. Once I get him out of his tank his huffing stops and once his brain starts to think and notice he's not getting hurt he does a lot better. Carl is rapidly becoming my little couch buddy as my snake I bought a couple years ago doesn't know the meaning of sitting still so I have to actively handle my BP Ouroboros or he'll run all over the place lol. But that's just because Ouroboros is hyperactive, and a young 2+1/2 year old little boy, so he's still a baby. 😆
@stfinalwrath
@stfinalwrath Жыл бұрын
A lot of it is learning to read your animals and learning to understand their body language and what it means. I've had a snake for 2 years and 3 months, and my snake Ouroboros has never struck at me, and my defensive rehome Carl has only been defensive over food but I've yet to get bitten by him either. Just understand your animals and always be open to learning new information and you should be fine.

Question... since snakes sense (taste) with their tongue from the air particles, won't they bite if you have blood on you, them thinking you are food?

I had this same thought a few years ago! I’ve come to the conclusion that the scent of blood doesn’t trigger a feeding response because that is not how they find their prey. They most likely associate the smell of living prey (such as the scent of a rodent bedding/burrow) with food, as these are things they would smell before finding a meal. Even if they did puncture the prey during the process of eating, the scent of blood did not help them find that food, and so it is not important from a survival perspective.
