@@MikeRussell it makes my voice sound better, and adds more gain. Is there anyway i can get both of those benefits some other way?
@MikeRussell4 жыл бұрын
The extra gain will be why it’s cracking, the signal is over modulating. The better option would be the dbx 286s in this video for real time processing and there’s a clip light to ensure you don’t over modulate.

I just got a dbx 286s....it's amazing. The noise gate in the DAW is not nearly as slick, and it's not live like the 286s...this is important for saving time and tweaking things up just right....live practice. I can use the output gain to drive a Sony little ICD-Px470 perfectly..it drives the noise right on out on the (ext.input)(line-in). Super clean and refined through the 286s. A lot less messy than setting up the focusrite/scarlett when on location or moving the portable booth around. I can still do things in the DAW but it does save a lot of tedium going through the 286s, and noise is a distant memory.. Thanks for the recommended settings!!. Compression is the one thing I will need to fiddle with and learn more... What a wonderful piece of kit for voiceover! And it's not $1000...mine was $200...and more than paid for by the 2 FetHeads I would have needed.

LF and HF DETAIL is more than bass/treble... for example, the LF works by boosting gain at around 80Hz but also cut at around 250Hz, it makes multiple adjustements at boosting/cutting different frequencies on the same knob, same for the HF button. I think the noise gate on the 286s is one of the best, it efficient, cuts mouth noises, room echo and it works really softly, no hard cut or open is heard when properly setup ! Nice preamp on the cheap !

I'm not quite sure why do you have the Gain set to +30 dB and Output Gain set to -30 dB this time? In your first tutorial, you had the following settings: Gain: ~30dB Output Gain: 0dB And when I checked tutorials for dbx 286s from other people on KZbin, they all recommended to have Output Gain set to: 0db. Could someone please explain this to me? Is it always depending on what microphone and the amount of gain on audio interface you have? Or how should one determine what to use? What's the general "guide" for this kind of stuff, so it does not clip and sound clean? Thank you! :-)

Thanks for this, Mike. I've just followed your guidance - tweaking for my own voice, of course - and I'm sounding a lot better (though I say so myself!) I've had the dbx for a while now and - although it's a great piece of kit - was getting frustrated at being unable to achieve the voice quality I wanted for radio and podcasting. I've checked out a few "dbx settings" videos on KZbin and, for me, yours has been by far the most helpful.

Hey, Mike. Love your vids; thanks for making them to help all of us out! I also love my dbx 286s, but unfortunately I have to keep the 80Hz high-pass filter turned off at all times and compensate elsewhere to mitigate background rumble. At 1:45 into the video you note that the human voice doesn't usually go below 80Hz, but that's not totally accurate. The typical range for someone who sings bass is C2 (65.4Hz) to around F4 (349.2Hz). Me, I can't hit F4 unless I go falsetto. In spoken recordings, I can reach G1 (50Hz) and typically bottom out--if doing trailer-like recordings or villain voices--at 58-62Hz. That part's just a personal problem. :-) But I'm certainly not unique. 80Hz is just a shade below E2 on a piano, and really isn't all that low. I'd think anyone who is a natural bass or even baritone (the typical singing range for a baritone starts at E2) would clip vital range and depth with the 286s high-pass filter enabled. So just a cautionary note (pun intended) for 286s users with deeper voices: analyze your frequency ranges to understand what enabling the 80Hz filter might mean to your recordings.

Yes! at least somebody really understand how DBX units gain structure works.👍🏽. I found interesting that you noticed that if you keep it bellow the yellow light it actually will sound really good. Most of the videos I watched ppl using DBX compressors they just crank the input thinking the yellow light its the optimal level ...in fact is not. Yellow light is actually the pre clipping level on this units. I tested this long time ago and found out that keeping your inout level on the green almost peaking the yellow randomly will make the compression stage more "friendly" and easy to dial. You kinda get more control and cleaner results.

How will using these two settings swapped make a difference on the unit's output? I'm using a ShureSM7B into a cloud lifter CL-1, into the DBX286, into a MG12XU mixer. My theory doing this is I'm getting clean gain form the lifter, so I'm not forcing gain out of the DBX, but the output is still giving gain. I'm going in circles here. Please help me out lol For reference, my DBX settings; 0 gain, compressor 4 and 7, de-esser 4k and 4, enhancer 0 and 1.5, no gate, output at 0.

I have a Barringer Xenyx X1204 USB audio mixer and recently upgraded my microphone to a Shure SM57 dynamic microphone. A few questions. What are some suggestions that I could do to take some of the reverb out of my recording or while livestreaming, because my room is really high ceilinged, and it is a untreated sound room. Also my parents will not allow me to get soundproofing in my room.
@MikeRussell4 жыл бұрын
Hi, the dynamic microphones are generally better at rejecting reverb than condenser microphones so you've made the best choice for a non sound treated recording space. Unfortunately sound treatment is the best way to get rid of reverb as without it the sound will continue to bounce off the hard surfaces in an untreated room. You may wish to ask your parents if you can build removable sound treatment panels and fix the acoustic foam to those and hang from the walls certainly at the points of first reflection to try and cut as much reverb as possible without full sound treatment.
@TheTechPianoPlayerKid4 жыл бұрын
Mike Russell thanks for the suggestion. Also I have a question. Do you know if Adobe addition cc is accessible for blind users with a screen reader? Do you really need a preamp or you can do just as well if you already have a Scarlet Solo, for instance? Thank you very much in advance for your details when replying, Mike!
@MikeRussell4 жыл бұрын
This does a totally different job. The Scarlet Solo takes the audio and converts it to digital for your computer. This device processes your audio and would sit between your mic and your interface. It's not essential to have one, if you're recording and editing the audio you could do what this unit does in post processing but if you're doing live work, or just want to save time in post processing then this is a great addition to your audio chain.

I’m currently using Rode NTK mic with Avid mbox. So is this suitable for my NTK Mic? Or do I need to add directbox in order
@MikeRussell5 жыл бұрын
If the mic has an XLR output connector it'll work.

Hi, very informative video, could you do a tutorial on the DBX 166xs please?
@MikeRussell5 жыл бұрын
Sure, I have it and love it!

I'm currently using a Focusrite Scarlett Solo for voiceover, but have just purchased a dbx 166xs, can't decide if I should get a mixer or preamp.

On my list. Thanks!

Hello, great video! You can show the best setup for 266XS? Thanks
@MikeRussell5 жыл бұрын
Sure, how are you using this processor yourself?

@@MikeRussell Hello Mike! I use dbx266xs connected to Mackie 802VLZ4 and Behringer H400 hum destroyer, to a PC for stream games. The idea is to improve voice quality. Thanks you for attending my query,

Great suggestion. I have the 166xs but not 266xs. They seem similar however :)

Hey Mike! Your De-esser? the led light doesn't blink at all? shouldn't the green led light start to flicker when you say s?
@MikeRussell5 жыл бұрын
Yes, the green and red lights (depending on strength of gain reduction) should blink when de-esser is active.
@CreativeNotJustYet5 жыл бұрын
@@MikeRussell Oh alright! I didn't see that your blinked at all when you had it on below 8k hz on frequency and 2 on threshold

2:07 unprocessed. (technically, less reverb - not echo!) 2:56 compression. 5:42 expander / gate.

Hi Mike, I’m a little confused how to set the 286 as a limiter?
@MikeRussell Жыл бұрын
The dbx286s is a microphone pre-amp and processor, it is not a limiter

@@MikeRussell Thanks as ever Mike, I didn’t think it was but something seemed to say it was - is there a hardware bit I could add like that to my dbx? (Sorry for another question and thank you again)

Have a look on the dbx website, they have an entire range of processors

Hi man. I have a Focusrite 8i6, and a Bluebird condenser mic. Will these improve the vocals? Its worthed? Thanks man
@MikeRussell5 жыл бұрын
You be the dbx 286s will do that and it'll sit right in between your Bluebird and the Focusrite interface.

I have Yamaha AG03 3-Channel Mixer is it possible to use it with this compressor?
@MikeRussell5 жыл бұрын
Sure, just run a TRS jack from the back of the dbx 286s into your Yamaha mixer.

Someone told me I should get this AND an audio mixer. Why would I need both? Or do I?
@MikeRussell4 жыл бұрын
This is enough if you just want processing on one mic. A mixer will mix in other mics and audio sources (such as Skype and jingles). You will need a way to likely get this into your computer. A USB mixer will help with this.
