I pretty much solved my moth issue with a single solution: Outdoor electric bug zapper. 2 years ago 90% of my apples had worms, last year, it went down to less than 5%. Moth loves to fly towards light at night so a zapper with a lamp is perfect. I put up the zapper after the flowering period so no bee was harmed. This year I also got a light timer with a light sensor so they only turn on after dawn and target moths.

Can also use a hanging trap in the tree that has 50% molasses, 40% water, 10 apple cider vinegar

Thanks for this, I might give the cardboard trap a crack this season. I had reasonable success last season by putting individual stocking things on each apple which stopped them from entering, but it was pretty labour intensive!

Corey try buying larger bags 8x12? And put it over 2-3 apples at a time, tying the bag off over the fruiting spur (carefully so as not to twist and break the spur).

Typically, the cardboard corrugations run vertically so the larvae can crawl into the channels.

Do you ever get plagued by Apple Maggots in Tasmania? Where I live in the UK, apple maggots can be a problem. Like you mentioned in the Codling Moth prevention techniques, sometimes the biggest problems are caused by an infesting from nearby fruit trees on neighbouring properties etc. Apple Maggot is the wormy creature, sometimes depicted on cartoon apple drawings! Apparently, in Sardinian, they use the Apple Maggot larvae to create a cheese! Love the information that your videos always impart, you’re an awesome innovator!

I assume the maggots are the larvae of the moths.

@@vistaprime The apple maggot (Rhagoletis pomonella) is a species of fruit fly with black striped wings, totally different from the codling moth (Cydia pomonella) But like you said, they both create similar larvae which infest and spoil the fruit! Thank you for the reply.

This is why wild apples around the place are a menace... they result from people chucking their apple cores out the window! Nice video - I've got 5 young trees and codling is my biggest fear 😩🍎🍏 Right, I'll get a pheromone trap and some hort glue tomorrow! Thanks !

@@alisonburgess345 I don't really understand the issue if apple trees are popping up on the sides of roads?
@alisonburgess3453 жыл бұрын
@@blackprincegt Well, they're feral and not looked after - they just fill up with all the bacterial, fungal and viral diseases, not to mention the dreaded codling moth. All these pathogens just waltz in to nearby gardens and can wreck your crops! I know they seem lovely but look closely - you'll hardly find an edible apple on them - they're just ravaged with diseases...

Is there a reason why you dont use the liquid trap ie detergent golden syrup and warm water hung in containers
@lindasteenhuis26392 жыл бұрын
I’m not Hannah but my thoughts are 1. The pheromone trap is species specific. Killing only the specific targeted pest. 2. The sweet liquid can drown beneficial insects as well as pests as it would attract a lot of different species.

@@lindasteenhuis2639 What I am trying is liquid traps using molasses around 1 part to 5 with around 1/2 teaspoon of yeast in about 1/2 ltr. Am putting this into a enclosed plastic container (old 1 ltr milk bottle ) drilling 6 mm holes in it and hanging it from the tree on up wind side. Apparently the moths can fit through the 6mm holes but they exclude at least some of the other creatures.

Glue traps have nothing to do with permaculture and represent a danger for biodiversity and especially birds. They are banned in most European countries. I wonder how many other kinds of insects will be trapped unnecessarily : /
