im manual swapping my miata at the moment and so far you don't have to take the dash out but tbh most of it is pretty easy. for me I did not have to take out the headers or even the exhaust out. i left it hanging from the resonator to the muffler hanging. and also I worked on it on jackstands so it is possible! Lastly, make sure you have the flywheel bolts for the manual flywheel since they are very different. Miata mecca and ebay are your best friends for finding those bolts since most hardware supply stores will not carry them due to being such a rare bolt size. good luck!

I hear old Chryslers need different crank shafts because the crankshafts for automatics have no mounting hole for the pilot bearing. That is the main thing keeping me from manual swapping my 1978 Dodge B-200 van, though I wouldn't mind also getting a smaller engine like from a 2.5 Dakota and putting in the engine and trans as a unit. I want the light engine for extra traction, because I have spent far more time digging out of mud and snow than I have accelerating.

Remember your speedo will be out now because the diff ratio will be wrong. also as a note for new players. not all cars are that easy to swap. take the 3.8 Buick v6, (or v6 Commy motor here in Aus) they auto and manual cranks have a different bolt batten. also some cars like the izizusu trooper (holden jackaroo) have some major changes that need to take place, depending on the model it can be anything from a wiring loom and ecu swap to a complete re fabrication of cross member and chassis components.

Just finished swapping my 99 NB from auto to manual about 2 months ago. Wasn't too hard, but I agree the auto trans is a beast compared to a 5 speed. The two things that took the longest was fitting the clutch and brake pedal (I didn't realise I could just swap the brake pedal itself and spent probably 4 hours under the dash on my back lol) and the wiring as it isn't that well documented. I managed to get the speedo to work by wiring it to the speedo input pin on the cluster (though I just balled up the wire and shoved it in instead of using a actual pin). I have still yet to wire in the trans neutral switch but the car seems to drive ok without it. I did jump the clutch switch so the car does start without pushing in the clutch. The one downside to manual swapping clean auto Miatas is that none of them came with limited slip diffs from the factory. Also shout out to Ben for having NB speedo sensors for cheap lol, I bought mine from him.

@@achikennugget38 thanks buddy. Also I'm going to do my swap next week and am mechanically experienced and not fazed by that aspect, but the wiring side I am unfamiliar with. What do you mean you jumped the clucth sensor? And what wires are absolutely necessary for start up? I've heard, reverse, speed, and neutral, but can't imagine speed and reverse light sensors impeed with start up. I have also heard that you can use the auto ecu but there is a certain wire in the console required for start up. Any tips would be helpful.
@achikennugget385 жыл бұрын
@@robertofigueroa5011 I've read you can use the auto ecu but I never tried starting mine with the auto ecu. I used a manual ecu for the swapped car and put the auto ecu in my already manual racecar. The auto ecu started like normal in the manual racecar if that helps at all. As far as the wiring goes, I drew out a diagram on what wire goes to what but I can't decipher it now lol. I remember just staring at the wiring diagrams in the factory service manual for a few hours though. I drew out the main auto trans connector that has 9 wires going to it , the speed sensor wires, instrument cluster wires for the speedo, and the auto trans control module wires. For sure I can tell you the black/red and black/blue thicker gauge wires on the auto trans connector can either be wired to the clutch switch or just straight jumped together to engage the starter with or without pushing in the clutch respectively (I just jumped mine as I've read that helps the thrust bearings last longer). After that, uhhh, I have a line drawn connecting the red/yellow and black/yellow wires on the auto trans connector and it's all labeled as "reverse switch". If I remember correctly, the red/yellow is the reverse ground side and the black/yellow is the positive side. I guess that doesn't really matter as I think the reverse switch on the manual trans gets connected to either of those for your reverse lights. Next is the speed sensor, the manual trans has a blue/yellow and blue/white wire and on the auto trans harness side there should be another connector with a straight yellow and straight orange wire, the blue/yellow connects to the yellow and the blue/white connects to the orange. Then from there, you need to find the auto trans control module under the dash and connect the yellow wire from there to one of the pins on the instrument cluster. The pin is on the larger white connector on the left most side of the cluster (from sitting in a US driver's side car, not sure on right hand drive). On that connector, you'll need to either add a proper pin or ball up and shove the wire between the white/red and black/red(or violet, is what I have written down) pins. For the straight orange wire at the auto trans control module under the dash, I have it connecting to the, uhh, "a/t black/white" with another line going to "auto trans control module". I think I may have just jumped the straight orange wire to a black/white wire that is also at the auto trans control module connector under the dash. I would recommend pulling up the factory service manual wiring diagrams and just following all the wires. That's about it, only real thing left would be the trans neutral switch which lets the ecu know when the trans is in neutral but the car runs ok without it (I mean it might effect the idle but I'll let you know if I ever connect it). There's a few posts I found searching around but they are also kind of vague and you'll have to eventually just go at it. Best of luck.

On a Miata you want to do black silicone on the flywheel bolts to keep oil from leaking.

I actually looked up the other way around switch manual to automatic. One reason to do this is if you have bad knees.

Hi Taylor I have a idea for a vlog and it will be a service for so many people that purchased a automatic ford focus and fiesta. Those two cars have TCM problems from factory and ford is doing nothing about it but they have those cars in manual. A step by step video would be much appreciated thank you

This is so cool. Is it possible to do a manual transmission across model/manufacturer? Like put in a BMW manual into an Audi or a Volvo?

Ben should sell a complete manual conversion kit on his website! Also.... aren't the differentials in the autos on miatas geared a little differently?

It's amazing 😁! What if it's a Chevy Trax 2020 AWD premier? And how much is it gonna cost at all from automatic to manual? Best regards

Rear main seal should always be replaced if you open the transmission. It is just a 5-10$ part, who knows it is about to go bad soon? Then you have to do all the hardwork again just to change a simple seal.

This is awesome. You guys laid it out very well without any janky bullshit. However that sqeeky sound in the background is horrible. Would love to see you guys put a Lambo Huracan pdk in an old Diablo ! I know you guys love manuals but it would perform better, maybe a sequential with the big hand brake bar style 😎

I'm here about the swap but I also learned what those extensions from harbor freight are called now. I thought they were too cheap to make it square lmao

My reason for manual swapping a car is because my dad doesn't want a manual so he bought the auto. Once I move out and bring the car with me, I will definitely manual swap it.
