Mikey Designs & Silk Screen I was using the latest CC versions of both and since have downgraded to previous versions to try to fix the issue. Yes yes and yes to your other questions. After fooling around with everything I finally tried changing the render settings for the import to lower the image resolution and I can view them now. After looking for solutions this seems to be a very common issue dating back to the 2018 version released last year and Adobe has done nothing to fix it. Adobe techs answering questions about the issue said they are phasing out DCS and obviously don’t care that screen printers use it.

Do you screen print using the Pantone Mixing System? The reason I ask is I believe most screen printers do, and if so why do some color separators not use the PMS color swatch such as PMS 485 Red from the Pantone Coated palette instead of clicking on an generic RGB red with your eye dropper. I don't know of anyone who prints using RGB inks. If you use the actual PMS color for the seps, then it would make more sense trying to match the ink colors. Am I missing something here?
@mikeydesignssilkscreen4735 жыл бұрын
A lot do, and a lot don't. It depends on your shop, and your clients demands. We don't get a whole lot of clients that want or need PMS color matching. As soon as they here that it's an extra $10 per Pantone match, they spring for the closest house color available. We use Pantone match colors when using Separation Studio to quickly do seps, which isn't always a cure all. When a client is looking for a match PMS color, we use the color picker in RGB and cross reference it with Pantone colors. With screen printing, their are inks that can come pretty close to RGB representation. As you know, CMYK can't produce as vibrant colors as RGB, like fluorescent colors, an RGB red, etc. I hope this is making some sort of sense. Greathing about screen printing is vs let's say, DTG, is screen printed colors are still much more vibrant than printing yellow and magenta to produce a red, or orange. Mixed screen printing colors still to this day are much more vibrant.

Hi, you mention towards the end that if you were printing down the black you would feather out the edges. Would you be doing that in Photoshop or Illustrator? I feathered my black ground in Photoshop, but then for some reason when I delete the RGB original channels to then save as a eps file, my transparent background (where feathering of black ground occurred) goes to white instead of remaining transparent? So when I place it into Illustrator it has a white box ground... which i'm not looking to have since it would be printed on a black t-shirt. Any thoughts on that?

Hi Britney! Got your email and I'll get with you today. Been a busy week. Generally, I wouldn't do black on a black shirt. Mikey this is so helpful. I have never known a good way to manually sep in Photoshop. Your method looks easy. I have used Separation studio for years, and it took me many setups to get that down. What do you think works best, sep studio or this method? Depends on art? Which do you prefer? Thanks!
@mikeydesignssilkscreen4734 жыл бұрын
Glad it helped! I'll use sep studio to get things done fast and if I know the colors I'm looking at work within their preselected PMS colors. For the most part, I'll give sep studio a shot first, if I don't like the results, I'll manually separate it which takes a little more time. We'll bill that additional time to the client. Colors like large orange parts, hot pink, etc tend to work better in photoshop. You just have to know how to use your levels and or curves to get things where they need to be which takes practice and as you've mentioned, multiple setups to predict what your seps on press will do.

Does anyone know: Can you reuse the same screen with the same design over and over and over? Does the emulsion start to deteriorate over time? What type of cleanup for long term storage is involved with the screens, after the job is done? Thanks!
@mikeydesignssilkscreen4734 жыл бұрын
You can use it for thousands of prints. Just use some ink wash to clean up before storing.

When it comes to merging the channels. In this case, you didn’t have a lot of blue so you merged the information on the channel with the Cyan and deleted the blue channel. Are you saying these steps correctly? When I do this, the channel I am keeping will just get lighter. For example- I have this pinkish color and the info is made up of red and magenta. I want to get rid of one of these channels and just change the spot color to the color of pink I am using. But when I hold option and hit delete on the channel after selecting the info on the other unwanted channel, the information just becomes a lighter shade of black. My workaround has just been choosing selected colors and clicking on the pink color and using the slider to pick how much I want to grab. But I’d rather combine/merge the channels so it is more accurate.

I have a six color press I bought used over a year ago have done sim. process a couple of time just for myself not for a client. I have programs that can get me there fast sep. studio is one of them. but I like to know what and how the programs do it and this helps. I understand that you get out what you put into it. I'd like to catch you live some time if and when I know your on. Thanks for the Vids. I don't get much business but just some but being you are selling products would like to know how and where to contact you for sales.

Thanks! I really appreciate the feedback. I plan to make more videos like these because there are a ton out there on how to screen print. Breaking down the art side showing how things are done on the backend seem to be really helpful and not as many. I'm actually going to record me designing a t-shirt this evening which I'll upload. We go live Mondays at 7pm central time. Feel free to contact us at info@mikeydesigns.com. Thanks again! Means a lot.

why you used Photoshop if you already use separation studio?
@mikeydesignssilkscreen4736 жыл бұрын
You should know how to do it manually. Separation Studio isn't a cure all and at times the art needs to be manually separated. I'd say it's good for about 80% of all jobs.

Something’s been bugging me. I’m wondering why you always save your seps in PS and open them up in illustrator to print. What is the point of this? The artwork doesn’t automatically change to vectors when you pull them up in AI so isnt it the same exact thing as what you had in photoshop.

That's true. Try looking into a good used 1430. I might be able to swing a 1430 your way, but it needs a new head, and the waste pad counter needs to be reset and a waste tank installed. I got a good used one, practically new for next to nothing and used the head off the printer I'm talking about. So the newish one I got, I installed a CISS kit and a waste tank. Cost me about $60 for those parts and will save tons of money instead of getting the $100 refills every 100 pieces of film. Email me and I'll see if I can help.
