Thank you for making this video and your channel in general. It's a great resource for me dealing with my recent back pain, understanding why its happening, and taking steps to address the underlying issues. I realized my pecs were super tight only after I started getting muscle knots and tension points in my upper back. Also realized I've had awful desk and sleeping postures for who knows how long. Prior to feeling the agony of my recent back pain, I wasn't even aware that this was a thing or why stretching is important - I apologize to my overworked rhomboids for my ignorance. Well better late than never - time to get massaging. Also it is alarming when I realized how many other people are out there with bad posture and tight muscles, and it's only a matter of time before the issues start popping up. Despite how seemingly prevalent it is, it's not something people typically talk about in day-to-day conversation.

How would you change your techniques with a man who has alot of chest hair? I have a client that always wants pec work and i find it very hard.
@MassageSloth8 жыл бұрын
+Charlotte W Great question! I actually find that most hairy men prefer for me to change very little. While it might feel like pulling hair from our end, most clients won't have any discomfort. The best way of navigating this issue is to have that conversation with your client as you work: "I'd like to sink in on your chest here. As I do so, let me know if it ever feels like I'm pulling your hair, okay?" If the client does end up having sensitive follicles, more oil may help, but you may have more success working through the sheet and doing compressive work.

@MassageSloth9 жыл бұрын
Katherine Ferranti True story! And yes, this is a conversation that needs to be had :) You've found the main weapon, which is thicker massage medium. The only other grand piece of wisdom that I can offer is this: Most guys have relatively insensitive hair follicles, in my experience. Once I started having frank discussions about back and chest hair, I found that most guys didn't even notice, even if it felt to me like I was pulling it with a vengeance. Everyone else, what say you?

@MassageSloth7 жыл бұрын
I do, but I tend to be less extensive with female clients unless they have problems specifically related to the pecs. I'm almost certainly doing them a disservice (why shouldn't they get just as much pec attention?) but I worry about possible boundary issues. I'm certain that it's a problem that could be solved by communication. If you'd like to see some really thorough pec work on a female client in the meantime, check out Allison over at Rebel Massage: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWiveqlmh76sr9E Thanks for the question!

Do you think longitudinal petrissage to pec minor coming in from the axilla is good practice considering the brachial plexus?
@MassageSloth5 ай бұрын
Do you mean the pec major grasp shown here? The brachial plexus is well tucked away, and you'd need to really dig toward the clavicle or shoulder joint with your thumbs to compress it. You'd feel like you were pressing on gristle, and the client would likely report nerve sensation or other discomfort. The solution there is to focus on sandwiching muscle, which doesn't require the thumbs to create any compressive force toward the bony/joint surfaces.
@deathsoulger15 ай бұрын
@@MassageSloth Haha, i guess my question is tangential. I do mean the Pec Minor (coracoid process ribs 3,4 &5) Why do you target pec minor through pec major rather than directly through the axilla
@MassageSloth5 ай бұрын
@@deathsoulger1 Ah I see! I work through pec major because I *like* that it spreads my pressure out slightly. I've never found a way to work with pec minor via the axilla that doesn't feel sharp and even invasive, though that might be a skill issue on my part. When working through pec major, even on someone with bulky muscle like my client here, it's still just a slight bit of extra tissue in the way, and it lets me angle my pressure directly away from the coracoid process in a way that I think feels nice (and where I can still find some really good spots)
@deathsoulger15 ай бұрын
@@MassageSloth Thank you for answering me so thoroughly. I'm new to working on this muscle so I'll head your caution and go through pec major like you in most cases. 🙏

New swelling is a good reason to check in with your doctor. They'll be able to have a look and do some tests (if need be), and generally keep an eye on the situation. It may indeed be muscular, but heading in for a check-up would help make that determination.

Hi Jose, for a complex shoulder/chest problem like that, I do recommend seeing a medical doctor for evaluation. Massage may be able to help as well, but you may have to ask for the pec work, as some massage therapists shy away from thorough work in the area.

Ian because Pec Minor is deep to the Pec Major, are you able to massage it with the light touch of myofascial work like you demonstrated? Thanks in advance for your reply on this, as always, I enjoy your videos ! Thanks for sharing. Denise RMT
@MassageSloth8 жыл бұрын
Hi Denise, absolutely. Pec major is quite thin over much of pec minor (even in the client shown here!), allowing compressive force to transfer to pec minor with minimal diffusion. In fact, I find that I need to use lighter touch in many clients with habitually rounded shoulders. The pec minor isn't used to being singled out, and it can grow quite sensitive over years of remaining engaged to facilitate shoulder protraction and chest breathing. This is a case where a little goes a long way. Thanks for the question!

Can the pecks be worked on over the sheet? Because it's quite hard to convince clients to have their pecks worked on,when they feel uncomfortable... or what would be a better way to explain to them that they need to have their pecks worked on for shoulder pain?
@MassageSloth8 жыл бұрын
Yes, there's a lot you can do through the sheet. Slow petrissage is a good choice, with the arm in various positions. You can also apply static pressure (i.e. don't glide over the sheet) and hold it as they breathe. I recommend angling this pressure laterally, or down toward their sternum while they have their hand behind their head. You can even apply some superiorly angled palmar pressure on the sternum, if your client is comfortable with the contact. So, that ties in to your second question: How to communicate with them about pec work? If a client has upper back pain, I tell them about their big powerful pec muscles in front, pulling their shoulders forward and down. There's a tug of war between the front and back, and one way to make the back feel better is to work with the front. After explaining this, I ask whether I can work with the upper chest (as I ask, I point out the relevant region on myself). If they say yes, ask them to let you know if you're ever too far into their personal space. So: Get informed consent, and then reassure them that you're going to respect their modesty. If you'd like to do that sternal work above, just say, "I'd like to make contact with your sternum, about right here [indicate on yourself]. Would that be alright?" All of these conversations get easier over time :) Good questions!

Not a problem! And not really, that was one of my main reasons for switching. It can't go rancid (it's actually a wax), and the staining is minimal compared to grapeseed. Prompt washing seems to prevent it from staining altogether.

I love watching your videos! I have definitely learned a bit and especially..to slooow down..I am currently a massage student so sometimes it is interesting to see other techniques out there. I am suprised to see you did not address pec minor via the axilla region like we were taught. (Striping / o's/i's at ribs 3,4,5) . Unless I missed you doing this technique? Curious if you do know that method is there a reason you wouldn't adress it that way?
@ariiSha137 жыл бұрын
I rewatched the video...* you did address pec minor is the axillary region...sorry haha...it was just more as a compression technique to pec major it seemed versus a cross fibering technique..right at the ribs..but its hard to see you may have been doing that
@MassageSloth7 жыл бұрын
While I love to work with the axillary region, I don't go under the pec major for pec minor work for two reasons: First, I find it difficult to address the full breadth and length of the muscle without using a fair amount of force to displace the pec major. This can easily lead to working too directly/forcefully with a sensitive muscle that isn't used to targeted contact. Second, the pec major is quite thin in the region of pec minor, even with my muscular client in this video. By working through pec major, I'm still able to apply pressure to pec minor, it's easier for me to use that 45 degree "myofascial angle," and the overlying tissue distributes my pressure across more of the underlying tissue, preventing too sharp of a sensation. Working with pec minor by approaching it from the axillary region can certainly be done kindly and conscientiously, of course. This is just my preferred method. Good question!
@ariiSha137 жыл бұрын
Ah thank you for the response! Very interesting, so I did see that right...I am still only at the end of my first year of schooling (in canada) but the emphasis here for pec minor being addressed that way is high, so it surprised me to see you work a little differently..most I work with are not comfortable with pec minor work. I don't like going very deep into the axillary region. When I approximate the arm forward for pec minor, and use a hand towel so it's less pokey, clients mind it less but most clients still don't like it all together. I am personally not a fan of causing pain or making my massage uncomfortable. It is nice to hear I am still addressing pec minor through contact with pec major then. I just want to be really thorough and get better at addressing the pec muscles as I am already running into a lot of clients with issues (back strains and relating spasms, shoulder problems) being attributed to because of their pecs. (imo) but hard to always explain that to people..haha I look forward to learning more and more in the massage field, thank you for your input! Can't wait for more videos
@MassageSloth7 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you're making some good adjustments to make that axillary work less intense, which I'm a big fan of. I like my work through the pec major, but even if you adopt that strategy, definitely keep that axillary work in your tool box. While that may be too direct for many clients, others will respond well to more direct work. If a strategy isn't working for a particular client, having different methods to try can make all the difference. Best of luck as you progress in your program!

Serious question: Is this technique exclusive to males?
@MassageSloth3 жыл бұрын
I would definitely be more conscientious about draping with women (or others who feel privacy concerns about this area). This would start with a conversation about exactly where I'd like to work and what I mean to accomplish, along with asking for consent and giving encouragement to revoke that consent in the case of discomfort or anxiety (that's my most concise definition of informed consent, btw- it should be thorough). From there we can still work thoroughly with pec major's lateral portion as it approaches the ribs, the sternum, and even the main body of the muscle. The easiest way to do this is to ask the client to use the contralateral hand to press the drape onto their own breast tissue, and to let you know if you're ever too far into their personal space. This can be extra useful because you can have them restrain their breast tissue away from where your hands are working, giving you extra real estate to work with. If you'd like some good examples of draping this area that don't require client engagement, check out Allison's various pec videos over on the Rebel Massage channel. She's awesome.

If you can ask them to bring their opposite hand over the drape and pull their breast tissue toward the middle (which is the language I use), then many of these options become available. I find that by explaining the tug-of-war happening between the anterior and posterior musculature, and thus the importance of pec work, most clients will be comfortable with more thorough work in the pec region.

How would you apply this technique to a woman regarding privacy?
@MassageSloth9 жыл бұрын
K Abdella That's a tough question to answer, and one I plan to have a whole video on. In the mean time: I just make sure to communicate well ("I'd like to work here, for this reason. Would that be okay? Let me know if I'm in your personal space.") and to err on the side of caution unless I have a good therapeutic relationship established. For women whose breast tissue gets in the way of your techniques, you can have them draw the breast medially using their contralateral hand (use their left hand to draw their right breast toward the midline). Again, this will require some confident communication.

That's exactly what I wanted to say! This is a very helpful video, I have a majority of female clients that would benefit.
