KZbin is unintentionally hilarious. A professional musician teaches you nuggets of bass gold, for free and yet you still find the time to type a complaint. I guess not everyone is lucky enough to live in Canada EH! Thanks for the wonderful content ❤

Speaking as someone who is so new to the bass that i'm still surprised by how heavy it is, no-one told me it would be so heavy, i'm finding these lessons really helpful. You're not trying to blow us away with everything you know, which i'm sure is a lot. You're keeping it short and to the point. I feel like i'm learning rather than being over-awed. Baby steps! Thank you. Subscribed. ❤

I really love your practical hands on approach to teaching. I wonder though if a brief descriotion of the notes of the scale and intervals along with explaining the scale numbering roots thirds fifths ect would also be helpful. Just a thought that I hope is constructive to improving an already excellent series of videos. @richbrownbass

Hi Rich, your lessons are clear, simple and useful. In the bottom of my heart I knew it would be very very difficult to know all the fretboard. And this is your lesson. You said learn the first 3 frets, by naming them as you are playing through. Every day. After the eyes naming, the fingers will name as well. No pressure. The next step will be the 5 first frets. Easy !!!Peace in my soul now. I'm grateful to you. Congratulations ! Good job ! We are still hungry and thirsty. God bless you !

Rich rock on! As an aside, having played bass in an original rock band I found it funny when one of our guitarists tried to play bass or try to feed me bass lines. Proficiency in guitar does not translate directly into proficiency on bass. Many guitarists don’t know how to properly play bass, what the instrument is for, or how to support the song. They tend to play busy and to not lock in with the drums. Geesh.

Whoopie! Lesson 3--and I'm laughing out loud from the opening! You really are the best! I remember one thing you said--in one of the first videos of yours I ever saw... I'll try--but will be paraphrasing awkwardly here--but you said it's important when practicing to always play something we can--for the sake of our morale--as well as working on the things we can't play (or maybe still can't play very well just yet)... We push our boundaries in this way, but make sure it's not all a "grind"... You spoke as well about learning the shapes of the sounds--and made an analogy between individual notes and individual letters... At that time--well... I was still learning guitar at that point... But I found your advice incredibly helpful--and I try to encourage my kids to approach music-learning differently too--sharing what I've learned here! Now, I've gotten myself a bass--and I'm starting to learn--"real time" with this Beginner Lessons series! So... Uh... I guess I'll be the guy in the comments asking you to talk more! I do hope you can refresh my memory--and share some of those tips in this series too... It's good to know there are more ways to learn--than the way we learned in Band Class! Thank you so much, Rich Brown -- best music teacher I've ever had! All the best!

What a wonderful compliment. Thank you so very much. Yes. I think it's important to find something fun to play so the work doesn't kill the spirit. As a college and university educator, I've seen too many students lose their zeal for music by becoming overwhelmed by all the academia. We can't lose sight of what inspired us to pick up our chosen instrument in the first place. It's important to have fun. We are PLAYING, after all!

I've been playing bass a bit on-and-off over the year, nothing really professionally or with that much serious commitment. I've been using Rocksmith for a while, and there a few songs that I can play pretty well. But I thought I'd go back to the basic and try to learn it for real. My biggest weakness that I can see so far (similar to what you said) is that my second finger is weak and I play mostly with the first, so I'll try to lead with the second now for a while. I also nice that I am alternating between the fingers, but when I switch to a different string, I always go back starting with the first finger, so it's never really a 1-2, and the first finger is used way more than it should. I'm not down with the rest stroke yet, but it does feel more natural.
