Hi Steve/ I feel the same way. I'm 69 years old and remember memorizing scales and not knowing how to get around the neck as easily as Mike has shown here. The only thing we had back than was the Mel Bay method books 1-7, which I only got to book 3 and then stopped taking lessons. I hard to figure things out by ear and figure how to get around the neck through my own ways. It took years to do that. However, if I was introduced to Mike's method I would have saved years of going crazy trying to figure this stuff out and would have been further along using Mike's ideas.
@2000SkyView5 жыл бұрын
@@louisaccardi6808 Yeah, those Mel Bay books are enough to discourage anyone from the learning the guitar. So, boring... I think you need to learn about the guitar first, especially chords, scales, and theory before even attempting to read music. Mel Bay just jumps into learning how to read music... very boring. But they didn't have TAB back then, i think much easier to grasp... once you can play there is plenty of time to learn to read music. We learn how to speak, resight the alphabet, make sentences, and communicate before we can read, why should guitar be any different? That is the natural way to learn...

After so many years of playing guitar I finally find a person that explains things in a calm effective manner. I can play songs in different chords that I have memorized but I needed this instructor that has showed me a very effective way of learning scales. Originally I was looking for Enrico Caruso in KZbin and find Michael. After finding this site, I forgot about Enrico and with the time that I have available now, stuck at home; I believe that my guitar playing will reach new heights. Thanks, professor. @@s8nlx661 I few years ago I gladly recognized that the same patterns are contained in all the "boxes", and my playing improved and most importantly became more fun! At that time, I also started to think not about fret numbers, but fingers 1-4. I think it is a disservice the way most people teach scales. Our brain gets clouded up by thinking about fret numbers. Student watch different tutorials on line, and see the same "Box/form" played in different keys and our brain getting bombarded with so many different fret numbers that it hinders our ability to process the information. Once I started to think of playing 1-4. 1-3, 1-3 etc, it became so much easier to navigate through scale and across the fret board.

Having looked at many different videos so far - for a couple of weeks - I have to admit that things are pretty confusing, but I'm persistent. I want to learn the appropriate things in a step by step sequence...and your methodology seems like good common sense without having to mindlessly memorize everything. I have subscribed and will begin to go through your lessons slowly. (BTW...my maternal grandfather was a Michael Caruso and I had/have many cousins also named Michael Caruso. I grew up in Toronto, Ontario where my grandparents settled and where my parents were born. It's really a small world now when you think of it ...particularly when you consider how the internet and social media connect us all in some way or another. ) I look forward to going through your lessons and truly learning my way around the guitar. Sincerely, John Viggiani.

. The Natural Approach works exactly as Mike says it will. The results are actually quite amazing. Mikes program allowed me to master the neck. Yes, that’s correct. MASTER THE NECK. No longer do I view the guitar neck as little separate pieces. I am now able to view the entire neck as one complete unit from the open strings at the nut all the way to the 24th fret. I am never lost. The program allows my hand to always be in the correct place on the neck so I am able to easily and naturally play the next notes whether I am ascending or descending. But most importantly, The Natural Approach taught me how to hear tones and keys properly and I have never looked back. I am able to play by feel thanks to The Natural Approach. This program is the real deal.

This one is a great video. It shows a true remedy for a problem that, as guitarists, many of us do have, for sure. We studied a lot of licks, scalar and chordal fragments but, after many years of practicing, we can't connect them in the proper way, and often get lost. The guitar is overwhelming us with a pandora's box of multiple visuals patterns and forms. Our constant thinking of those multiple geometric forms is distracting us from the real task that we have as musicians: thinking and producing the sounds we (and our listeners) want. I confirm that your approach takes the student to a real understanding of the entire keyboard, and of the scales, not as theoretical elements, but as aural tools, leading to musical creativity, and real improvisation. Obviously, we need a basic knowledge of musical theory and an ear already trained just a little, to really appreciate the value of this video. To those that can't understand what is presented here I say: make some basic study on the formation of the scales, learn what intervals are, then come back here again!'

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I've watched your excellent video over and over and am fascinated by your in dept knowledge of the fret board and your ability to adapt and move effortlessly around it. You explain it very well and make it seem so simple and easy to achieve. Inspiring stuff, I will keep practicing and dream of being this good.

excellent teacher, and exercises make sense. Natural is RIGHT! ONLY, why are the videos with your books on DVD? Is there any possibility of having them converted to downloadable files? Are they available to download rather than a DVD set?

I absolutely dislike scales! Is there really a way around those nightmares?! Or is it just part of music. But I'm doing my best. Thank you sir. I like your approach.

I have been working on both videos information ... so I thought. After getting the feel and "establishing the sound" ... basically, ... I came back to watch the video again. Woe, he was saying so much more than I first realized. It was/is like going back over some bible verses you have read for years and then they suddenly mean much more. The one one thing in fingering ... so I didn't do that right so will re-learn, but the few minutes with it made a big feel impact. Can't wait to get to the major scales and number of notes per string more. I ordered four of the courses and looking forward to them ... and I hope I am ready ... backing tracks for teaching will be interesting... hasn't arrived YET.

WOW! I had watched sooo many KZbin videos and nobody can explain the scale as you just did! With other videos lve watched they probably forgot they're talking to dummies 😆. My biggest problem is that if l don't understand the "why" and if it don't make sense l can never learn. I must know why! Now l know why/how. Thank you very much!
