Dont do them.. Fire at 2km in jets and about 1-1.5 km in props and dodge. Avoid last second head ons.

@hillllll6039 vertical targeting really fucks up your aim when youre doing anything else. Dont use it. Just aim above in headons. Much easier to learn that than to account for the vertical targeting in flat turns.

Ok this is by far the most in detailed explanation of Vertical Targeting that i found and is glad to say that the ammo usage during dogfights in the Zero became lower, would recommend people to try it in dogfighting if head-ons failed.

So, some 50s are actually pretty decent in a head-on due to their velocity, the F-86 for instance can spit a bunch of lead and then disengage before the enemy's rounds have a chance to hit.

cool manuever: if you are using the wasd keys to move ur plane, with an f14 you can press s, e, d and it will make a cool barrel roll type maneuver

Vertical Targeting is a great idea, I use it, but with vertical targeting enabled it is not true that your bullets will fly under the crosshair. Your bullets will be lofted so they exactly meet up with your crosshair at the set convergence. This requires you being in straight level flight. In the clip with the T-2, you were not level and your plane was pulling a lot of AoA, so your bullets momentum vector does not perfectly align with that of your plane, hence why your bullets flew under the crosshair. If you think about it, your crosshair was several metres above the Su-25, meanwhile there is maybe 1m tops vertical distance between your crosshair and your plane's barrel

Headon as helpful sometimes, but overall, head on is just a "monkey see a dot monkey do flight straight to it" thing. There is nothing simpler than head ons. You see a plane, fly straight for it, you shoot. Head on skill give you kill in a headon, that's it, you can't still maneuver,.... I was taught that only a Spitfire is worth that risk, potentially a mustang too. Other aircraft are simply worse so why would I risk my way to the hangar, if I can just energy fight that shit out. (Bf109 enjoyer)

I find that 50 cals are great in head on, sure sometimes they live but if they took a hit you pretty much already won the fight if you didnt get hit yourself. 50s typically fly much straighter and further and can give you a good range advantage in head ones. and since an aircraft with 50 cals tends to have more guns onboard than something with 20s or 30s you put out a larger clump of rounds quicker.

There are exceptions, Wyvern and J6K1, for example, with 600 m convergence and wing mounted guns, practically turns into a massive shotgun. You will hit anyone in a head on just via sheer volume of your shell curtain.
