In our video, Chris Modoo and Austin Pollak take on a challenge. They're given a jacket and have to pick a shirt, tie and pocket square to see who can come up with the most stylish combination.

Transcript:
CHRIS' FIRST LOOK
I've decided to pair the Light-Blue Herringbone Jacket with a striped shirt. Adding a barber stripe shirt gives us a bit of pattern-on-pattern, but I think because the jacket is quite subtle, it can take it and it gives you a nice background for a tie.
For me, a great tie pairing is the Bordeaux & Pearl Houndstooth, I usually wear something like this for more formal looks, maybe with business attire or even a wedding look, but this printed tie lends itself so well to complementing this blazer. I love the pattern matching here. I like the stripes, checks, and herringbones, and I've tied it all together with another abstract pattern in the pocket square. I think it's very visually interesting because each pattern here is quite subtle; it's a small houndstooth, a subtle herringbone, and a clean stripe. It adds a lot of interest without being too overwhelming. It's a confident look, great for daytime or a smart look.
AUSTIN'S FIRST LOOK
So, the tie I chose for this round is the Chocolate Pindot Merino Wool Tie. I think it's perfect to complete this wintry, cool look. The brown and blue are so elegant together, and I'd finish this off with dark grey or charcoal flannel trousers. I've chosen a cheeky pocket square here because it brings in the colours of the other ties that I didn't choose, but I wanted to include them nonetheless.
CHRIS' SECOND LOOK
So, we have a light grey summer jacket, and I was given the challenge of how I would style it for a summer event. I've gone for a white shirt - a soft white shirt, so it's not too contrasting against the soft grey.
Playing around with some texture; I think this ecru shantung tie is interesting, you've got the blue, which really complements the grey nicely, and the white really pops with the white shirt. To complement it, this sort of tonal pattern pocket square just adds a bit of interest. And then with the trousers, you could just go for a mid-grey worsted or you could go for maybe an elephant grey flat linen. They also look very smart, but this would be a lovely jacket to wear to perhaps an informal summer wedding.
AUSTIN'S SECOND LOOK
So here, I have the same grey summer linen jacket that Chris previously styled, but I chose an elegant pale blue shirt to go with it, rather than the white shirt.
The tie option I've chosen, which I love, is a navy blue wool tie. It's not just a plain navy blue tie; it has a Prince of Wales pattern, which makes it more interesting. I love the tonal look of the shirt and the tie; it helps the jacket pop off. I'd finish this look with a pair of light brown linen trousers, which would perfectly match the pocket square here, bringing all the elements together. You have some light brown in there, the same navy as the shirt, and the hand-rolled edge is more or less the same colour blue as the shirt; it's a finishing flourish that completes this perfect summer look.
CHRIS' THIRD LOOK
We've both selected the blue chambray shirt to complement the woollen sports jacket. To really pull out the red of this jacket, I've chosen a red shantung stripe tie. It's not an obvious choice for a sports jacket, but I like the way it slightly clashes and draws attention. It's quite a hard thing to do with such a busy jacket, but I like the contrast and the textures. I love the way the blue works with the jacket and then the tie that picks up a completely different colour.
As far as the pocket square goes, I've picked something with reckless abandon and just threw it in there.
AUSTIN'S THIRD LOOK
Same as Chris, here we have the woollen check jacket and the chambray shirt, it's a great combination. My tie selection is focused on a tie that plays into the jacket, because it's such a strong pattern jacket I think it deserves a tie that's interesting but maybe a little more muted.
And I also chose a shantung stripe tie, but in blue. Yours was in burgundy, but I think there's probably a reason we chose similar ties; great minds think alike. I think it's gorgeous with the chambray shirt. It pulls out the blue in the jacket and complements the burgundy...

In my opinion Chris wins every round. He demonstrated an expert understanding of the color wheel, patterns and material textures. Austin picked great monochromatic and neutral color schemes. Attractive classic style. Ultimately the more daring patterns and attention getting color schemes Chris went with were really stylish.

Great video, big fan of this format where the two duel it out. Round 1 goes to Chris Modoo for the elegant Houdstooth tie Round 2 goes to Chris again for his use of a softer slightly warmer shirt and tie combination that felt a bit more seasonal then Austins cool toned look. Round 3 goes to Chris again for his use of the warmer toned red shantung tie. In my eyes, Chris made slightly better outfits because he added warmth to them. This is the type of thing that draws people in, and is ideally a better approach to wearing ties in leisure. Austins combinations were usually a bit cooler, and whilst this does work, it felt like his outfits leaned further towards the 9-5 workers approach to smart casual dressing, and although these outfits could be worn in the evenings and for leisure they aren't quite as transferable to a day of smart leisure. Since my judging criteria was based on smart leisure dressing, Chris won my votes in every round. So Chris wins if the approach is smart leisure dressing, but Austin wins if the approach is for smart casual dressing.

First look - houndstooth tie is the best out of the 6 Second look - not a fan of white shirt with the jacket colour. Light blue is much better. 'Shanton' tie looks great, otherwise the navy. Last look - both the red and the blue stripe tie looked great!

I like this duel of the Gentlemen. Please do that more often. It is a great format. Round 1 winner is Austin. I personally do not match too many different pattern and Austin's outfit appealed to me because of this. The outfit from Chris looks like something I would try just to be outside of my comfort zone. Round 2 winner is Austin. I do like the dark blue tie with the light blue shirt. It seems more stylish to me. Round 3 winner is Chris. The combination of the shirt color and the red tie looks awesome. I would wear that immediately.

This is what i was thinking from the one of the last videos. A "live look-book" and three is the perfect number of rounds. My scoring on this: Round 1- I give the point to Chris for the striped shirt and houndstooth tie. It's a great, adventurous look. The brown tie from Austin a strong contender. Round 2: I give the point to Austin. I think the blue shirt swayed my opinion on this. Had I not watched the entire round, I could have easily stopped on Chris's choice with the shantung tie. Round 3: Total draw. The jacket looks great with the blue shirt. I think I prefer the jacket without a tie. I wasn't able to award a point because the shantung ties were so close, thus, the draw. Overall: Chris 1, Austin 1 + draw. Final note. I'd like to see Chris's tie choices with the sharkskin jacket with the blue shirt. Please continue making these videos.

Quite an enjoyable segment! Definitely great takeaways with these two expert stylists demonstrating how colors and patterns can be used to create different looks and mood! My takeaway; I must try bolder ties (a la the blue) to pop my lighter (linen) suit and get more shantung ties. These are delicious and so well complement the “anchor” jacket(s). I believe I recognize some of the pocket square colors and would enjoy seeing exactly which of the Rampley selections these actually are. Very nice, gents!

I think that without mentioning the color of the trousers, is not really dealing with the topic you mention. Anyone can match a tie to a jacket & shirt. Trouser color complicates matters. You omit this !

@RampleyandCo, I love the looks with contrasting jacket and pants and with shantung ties. Traditionally that was too casual for business (see John T. Molloy's New Dress for Success). However, in 2024, with the world far more casual anyway, does this now fit into appropriate business wear, say, for a meeting with the President of my company, me being a low level manager? I do have a navy suit and your traditional business ties in navy or burgundy silk and I can pull off the exact look that Molloy recommended way back in 1975, but it isn't my most comfortable look. I want to be respectful to the President of our company, but I'm considering going the route of what you have shown here, which feels more modern to me. I would really appreciate your advice Chris or Austin. Basically, are these business outfits you are putting together, or are they for outside of those big meetings?

Chris (Gentleman on the right) did the job perfect. He knows how to present a gentleman! Thumb up for Chris!!! Austin (on the left) last choice on the last outfit was the only acceptable one. All other recommendations made the look quite boring, despondent and unimpressive. Please learn from Chris, except you dress Secret agents who like to blend in with the crowd.
