The “L” on GM’s electric vehicles is a stronger regeneration mode so you don’t have to use the paddles as much. You probably notice the car slowing down faster in “L” mode because the electric motor, acting as a generator during deceleration, converts more kinetic (motion) energy back into potential (battery) energy than when not in “L” mode. The paddles do the same thing, so when you use both the paddles and “L” mode, you get the highest regeneration. It takes power to spin the electric motor as a generator which is why you feel the car slowing down. The electric motor/generator is now braking your car instead of your rotors and brake pads. Regeneration works best in town or on hills where other cars have to use the brake pedal more. On highways, it doesn’t do all that much. Fully electric cars I would assume have more regen braking power due to bigger electric motors/generators which is where you get the phrase, “one pedal driving”.

When I had my 2011 model year Chevy Volt, I would get around 40 miles of electric driving range, my work commute was only 2 miles each way, 6 days a week, and on Sundays I would drive just about the 40 miles running errands on my day off. It came down to the point where months would go by where I was not using my gas at all, and the car actually would automatically run a 10 minute maintenance cycle running engine and burning off the stale gas in the fuel lines, in the 3 years I owned the car, I think it did that maintenance cycle around 3 or 4 times, and in the 3 years I only managed to burn a total of 56 gallons of fuel for a little over 17,000 miles of driving, which averaged around 300 miles per gallon roughly which is very very impressive, I would definitely get another Volt, but you are right, I am seeing ones that have around 100,000 miles with asking prices of 10-15,000, which is crazy. My 2011 Volt was brand new, and the sticker price was 45,000!

That's awesome man.....we are very interested to see how the experiment comes out.....we leave in a few days so we'll probably not post it until we get back and edit it and all that.....time will tell if this LOW gear method really has an impact because its about 388 miles one way and it's very hilly terrane so it'll be a good test!

6:07 Actually, you DO have your brake lights on (and that's a good thing). Most cars with regen, including GM cars, will illuminate the brake lights in some way when slowing down with regen braking only. From what I've heard, GM cars illuminate them when you cross a deceleration threshold. If I understand correctly, if your speed is decreasing by a certain amount, your brake lights illuminate. Say you're going downhill and regen isn't really slowing you down, no brake lights. But if you're on flat ground or going uphill and your speed decreases rapidly, you get brake lights.

Have a 2014 Volt Premier. I’ve found that Low gear tends to be best for coming down a hill or stop and go slow traffic. Otherwise, my range is preserved best when I coast in D and feather the regen section of my brakes. I experimented with only Low gear use during normal city driving and my range went way down. Live in a temperate climate most of the year. Charge on 8 amp or 12 amp depending on when I need the car fully charged.

yes....we did a similar experiment as the one we did on our trip to Penn and the low did may more electric miles although not much, but still more and honestly we dig the one foot driving because we have gotten so used to it. Here in Cleveland the weather has a huge effect on our mileage so we just try to get the most we can without getting too technical and this seems to work very well....thanks for watching

@@jackanddan It’s a great car; thanks for educating people on it. I get the allure of one pedal driving; it is pretty nice. I would be very psyched to inherit a Volt from my Dad. Too bad GM discontinued it. Maybe they’ll reincarnate it as a plug-in hydrogen car way way way down the road.

Good stuff! We have a 2017 Volt and I used to play around with low and the regen paddle on the back of the steering wheel, but honestly, using the brake pedal works almost better because it gives you variable amounts of regen up until it has to use the friction brakes, if at all. Also, some Volts have that "shift to park" issue with a switch inside the gear selector, so I figure, the less I'm moving that gear shift from drive to low, back to drive and then park the better.
@jackanddan Жыл бұрын
Very cool! We just posted an experiment on a road trip we took and it help gain 1 mpg in low and also hardly had to use the brakes at all so we are sold on it and we will be doing another city driving experiment as well soon. Even though 1 mpg on a road isn't much the saving of the brakes is nice and so is the one foot driving. We have had some instances only in hot weather with the "not in park indicator" and next time we take it in this summer for it's annual check up/oil change we are going to have them check it out....We posted the road trip video a few hours ago and we're going to take a few weeks to do the city one because its going to be over the course of a few weeks....thanks for watching and have a great day!

I have a 2017, driving it 65k miles in the past 3 years. Two points.... I always drive in low. My preference. Max regen. The park switch issue; ive dealt with this one. The switch is only in park. You dont exercise the switch in any other gear.

Hi, I just bought a 2017 premier in November here in Northern California with 35K miles on it, and I'm learning how to drive it. At first I was very disappointed because when I thought was a close charging station didn't have compatibility for a volt. Then I decided to just charge it at home. I live on a hill and can't get it down my driveway so I'm using an extension cord that I use for portable air conditioner in summer for my bedroom and it seems to be working fine. My question is about using mountain mode. I drive a lot down in the Sacramento Valley but I live in the mountains at about 1400 ft. I see it says to drive the car for 20 minutes in mountain mode before you start going out mountains but I'm already going up mountains. And it seems like mountain mode eats up the EV battery. In spring and summer I go to Lake Tahoe which is 79 mi from me. I have to go over the 8, 400 ft Donner Pass sunmit to get there, which is 58 mi.from me. Is there anything in particular I need to know about driving that far uphill?
@jackanddan Жыл бұрын
mountain mode seems to be more about the added energy to get up a hill then it is about regeneration going down......we just use LOW all the time....and we have done many trips through mountains and MOUNTAIN vs LOW seemed to regenerate less for us so we just stick to LOW all the time. It seems to save brakes and save energy more. We just passed 60k and still breaks are good and we regenerate well and also use the paddle instead of the brakes whenever possible. Good luck.....we will continue to post updates every year or 6 months on this car because we absolutely love it

Great video, I just traded in my Honda clarity for the Chevy volt. I was able to charge my clarity battery to 60% while driving. Can I do that on the Volt? And how to do I save battery and switch to just gas while on the freeway?
@jackanddan Жыл бұрын
pretty much just put it in hold and it'll use gas and save the battery and regenerate especially on hills. We have done other video on trips showing this more, but will be doing an experiment in the city soon with Low vs Drive and we did get more miles in Low.....not much but the one foot driving is nicer and you don't have to bother with the pedal either......we just think it's easier.....it'll be out soon
