#electriccar #hybridcar #electricvehicle #hybridvehicles After five years of having our Volt, we decided to put driving in low to the test again. We did this experiment on a long-term trip on our spring break quite a few months ago, and found that it was helpful and saw an increase in miles per gallon. We also preferred how it felt driving in low and we decided to again put it to a test in city driving in pure electric mode, since according to OnStar, we drive in pure electric mode 80% of the time. This exactly why we purchased a Chevy Volt. We feel that any increase in regeneration is a good increase, and even though it was not a drastic difference, we do prefer the one foot driving and not having to use the hand paddle at all. For this experiment, in both cases, the driving was very similar. The weather was very similar, the road conditions were similar, and we feel that for us this was enough to convince us to just drive in low all the time, and since we like the feeling of it, we are sold on it. So, we are just going to leave it in low all the time no matter where we drive. Hopefully this helps a lot of people who have a car like we do whether it is a Volt or not. We have recently purchased a plug-in electric hybrid Jeep Wrangler, and it actually has a button you can push to put it in a higher regeneration mode. When you have it in that mode it drives very similarly to when we have our Volt in low, so again we just leave it on all the time. I didnt catch if you mention this or not in the video driving in L or using one pedal driving with EV cars in general has one risk to put it in perspective, when you learn to ride a motorcycle you are taught whenever you sense a bad situation lining up, you cover your brakes which means put your fingers and toes over the brake lever and pedal, so you can brake instantly if you need to using one pedal driving the car is limited to how fast it can stop using only regen - if you get caught off guard and need to stop quickly while feathering the regen with your foot on the accelerator, it takes time to recognize you need to stop faster, and to move your foot over to the brake pedal its not a big risk, be when it happens you will know, and if you have passengers in the car you will need to brake twice as hard once you moved your foot to the brake pedal

My wife drives our 2017 Volt to work and back (50 miles round trip) and she always drives in D and "normal." Almost always makes it on battery (except in winter), we don't see much difference between D and L. However, I do like L in heavy traffic or on city streets. I always put it in D on the freeway. Great cars!

Honestly 1 mile isn't that much of a difference, it could've been the driving was slightly different as it was so close, I think the only fair test would be in a straight line with the speed set so the test is identical but that would be next to impossible to do, nice test Dan!

Gen1 Volt doesn't trigger brake lights when using L setting, so you may surprise some people behind you that you're slowing more than they may expect. Not sure about Gen2.

@jackanddan Жыл бұрын
@@KirstenQuickFit honestly being a nurse I’m willing to different things I’m not a typical guy that’s in the cars and stuff like that but I started getting into them more when they started making these kind of cars and we are very happy. We bought this plug-in hybrid it’s an absolutely amazing car. They sold her over 100,000 of them every year for 10 years and there are a lot of people with them and a lot of people have questions about them ever since we posted our first video so every six months or so we like to do an update on it as we learn more ourselves I will most likely keep this car as long as I possibly can because it is totally ideal for what we use it for in our daily use we use absolutely electric and never use gas and when I travel if there’s no place to charge I can use gas so it’s absolutely perfect and super efficient. Plus we think it’s actually quite sharp compared to most little nerdy hybrids😆😆👍👍

If you drive in a low all the items that will only be on battery right? This is awesome I add $20 to 50 of gas in my exv I wold like to by a car like this just for running around errands and stuff free energy is free energy I thank there is a difference with the test that you made I’m going to try to get me a car for a daily runner And save some money for the tanks lol good video guys

Thanks for the info. I just got a 2017 with 96k miles replacing my 2016 Prius V. I can only charge at work on the weekend or briefly during the week for lunch. Hopefully I’ll have a place I can charge at in the near future. I’ve been after one of these for years! I can’t wait for the heat to drop here in FL as I’m using up so much power with the A/C (I do street outreach so have a lot of idling).

I also have a 2018 that I purchased this past April with 32,000 miles. Currently it has a little more than 42,000 miles. I’d like to see you do a test using the paddle . I drive in low pretty much exclusively and use the paddle a lot. I’ve not tested to see what it does for the mileage but I’m sure it preserves the brakes at a minimum. I live in the Atlanta area and by far most of my driving is local. In fact this past November, I didn’t use any gas. I average about 30-40 miles a day and I can get 45-50 miles on a charge regularly. This past summer I got his high is 62 miles on a charge, but it was also warmer too. I think that makes a difference. We also took a road trip this past summer, and I drove it in hold mode for about 2000 miles and was averaging 42 miles to the gallon on just gas. I love this car. I think Chevy made a mistake ceasing production.
@jackanddan Жыл бұрын
We agree.....they should have kept it but we are glad we got one and will be keeping it! We do use the paddle in addition to low and hardly ever use gas except for trips, but wanted to try to only have one variable for this experiment so didn't for this. Honestly we love this car and will try to keep it forever! We will continue to do follow ups on it and hope it helps people. We have seen 2019 and 2018 models for sale at more than what we paid for this so they are holding their value very well for sure! We'll see what Chevy does in the next few years....
