You have NO idea how much I needed this. I just purchased a condo and my glass dining table is too large. I should have a round table but this was an investment I don’t want to give up

@@JulieKhuu I’m so shocked you replied! Thank you! It’s a rectangular table with a custom glass so it fits the base. You gave me the idea to place it in the center of the room horizontally with the shortest end against the wall against the longest wall. Think of the letter “T”. I’m going to get benches for each side. Ill keep 2 of the white leather dining chairs and place one in each corner slightly turned towards the table about 30 degrees. I’m putting large black “French door (?)” mirrors on either side of the table floor to ceiling. I’ll strategically sprinkle some greenery around as well. Now I’m about to watch a video to learn how to replace a light fixture. 😂

Just a comment before we get carried away with the benefits of a round-edged table: they are a challenge to work with those times you have a huge gathering. With a rectangular table, you can abut another table, run a tablecloth over the whole thing to hide the seam, and everyone dines together, banquet-table style. You can’t do that so easily with a round or oval table (says the guy who would kill for a Saarinen oval pedestal table but knows he’ll hate himself afterwards).

Haha yes, do what works for your lifestyle and needs. If you hardly entertain, round tables are great space savers

I've been absolutely lost on what to do with my dining space - I've maybe even commented somewhere on a video before about it. Its been a year and a bit of not knowing what to do because I live in a small half hexagon open floor plan. I have two chair, a bench, and a small 4 seater rectangular table. I've had about 24 inches clearance on both sides (between the wall and the kitchen island) and its driven me nuts. I couldn't find another table that was smaller or fit better. I never considered having the bench on the wall side and therefore needing less/no passage way room. Duh! I just ran downstairs to my dining room and switched it around to the layout at 9:14. THANK YOU! While I'm small, as soon as we can start having guests over (I bought just before pandemic) I'm sure I'd feel stressed about everyone else dealing with the strange clearance I had set up. I think you just solved my issue FINALLY! My layout is extremely unique so I haven't found anything that's worked yet.

Hi Julie, MaryAnna here! Great video! I am loving this series and you are a great hostess! My Dining Room is 15x 11 and I currently have a round table, but I am getting rid of it and going to get a rectangle table and new chairs. The challenging part is the windows and the main wall space (where I am going to put a large painting) do not align evenly... I’m considering displaying the painting off center of the wall it will be on to better align with the windows on the opposite wall. Also, on the wall where painting will be- hanging it off center will leave room at the end for a buffet or baker’s rack. I wish I could afford a decorator, but I am on a humble budget. Thank you for your ideas- always appreciate your videos 😁

Its the artwork as no walls. The kitchen is to the right of thd windows with the living room behind it.the dining atea is square and Im thinking a round table would be best deating 4 thst has leaves to become oval when family comes. I am planning to outsource a customized banquet bench pushed against my corner wall in L-shape since its a passage way and doors next to it.. But i am having difficulties of which size round table i will get because i wanted to out 2 more seating opposite of the banquet chair. My round table choices are: 80cm; 90cm; 100cm in diameter. I cannot do a trial sample here in the philippines so i wanted to know whats best suits on my space.. Thank you in advance julie!

@@lindaleal809 actually, i still have open space after that width measurement. But i dont want to block the passage to my room door and also on the length space, I dont want something bumping on my main door

By my calculations- 48” round would be ideal / so 100cm the largest size 👍🏻

i think ill gamble on the 30 inch chair clearance and go for a larger table. 30 inches should be adequate for physically fit folks.

Hi Julie! Need your suggestion, our front door opens into our dining area and my husband doesn't like it. Table is horizontally placed. If we move it vertically, table would block the pass way to kitchen.

Sounds like your table might be too big/ wrong size/ shape Hazel. Try an oval or round shape so there’s no sharp edges to bump into. Or flank it against a wall to free up space

I have a dining room with a door that lead to back patio. I use as common entry. I want to place a full length mirror on it.

Mind the support since that door will swing quite frequently Ailghlette, might not be the most stable spot for a mirror

What if your dining table is behind a couch? What size table works best? Thank you Julie.
@JulieKhuu2 жыл бұрын
Subtract the clearance needed for passage (36” min to pull the chairs out, more if there’s a walkway) and what you’re left with is the maximum size

Can a conventional settee be used for dining? I would’ve thought the seat would be too low to the ground.

@@lindaleal809 that would be pretty clumsy. To add 2” of height needs a BIG pillow. It would be like eating on a waterbed.
@Person-mh6xq3 жыл бұрын
Depends on the seat height and firmness of the seat (if you sink when sitting in it).
@JulieKhuu3 жыл бұрын
Typical dining seat height is 18”-20”. Measure the settee J 👍🏻

What about counter height or pub/ bar tables. Are these ideal for functionality, aesthetics and feng shui. The area is really hard to determine true shape of space, but it’s a window it Lake views. Not far from island.

The seats should ideally be comfortable so you can sit for long periods of time, specify something with a back for this purpose Mecha 👍🏻

I have a pounded metal round dining table. It is leaving a metal smell on my arms or clothes. Should I get a glass top? Or will that be overkill?
@JulieKhuu3 жыл бұрын
Glass would be my suggestion as well 👍🏻
