Please offer your tips on how to style a dining area when it is part of the living room as in a condo. Older style apartments that have a long narrow room that is living on one end and dining on the other. I not only have this but have small 8’x11’ covered outdoor terrace off the dining area. I love the space but struggling to find a coherent design style for the space.

This is, hands-down, the best and the most practical decor video I have ever seen AND it is visually delicious. Well done! And I love, love, that you did what I have always dreamed of doing: Putting luxurious, comfortable, rolling office chairs around a dining table. It makes the dining table perfect for long dinners, for poker night, for doing projects. The ones in my imagination are not as cool as yours, though. I love the arching metal armrests (Sticky and greasy hands should not go near the fabric but have easily cleanable armrests) and the unique fabric you chose for the upholstery.

Excellent tips for the dining room. I'm not sure about the matchy-matchy dining chairs. I've seen different head chairs at a dining table and I like the look, but all matching chairs really makes a statement, too, as shown in all of your dining room pictures. Maybe it depends on the type of table. I learned that a large statement piece of art or sconces on the wall that is seen when you walk into the room will really define the space! Thank you for that tip! And yes, I'd love to see paint colors for different types of wood.
@JulieKhuu Жыл бұрын
The wood tones + paint colors videos is up now! Head chairs look best with a rectangular room and table since there’s a clear hierarchy 👍🏻😊
@nataliaandrievskaya77873 жыл бұрын
Hi Julie, thanks for the video! Choosing shape of the table was an eye opener for me. I replaced my round table by rectangular to host more people but now I also know it better suits the space! I do have a question though - I plan to do a gallery wall in the dining area of the great room (on the focal wall) and I have a huge piece of art that I love above the sofa in the conversational area (dame focal wall) that goes almost all the way to the cieling... Do I need to match upper line of my gallery wall in the dining area with the upper line of the painting above sofa so that they are on the same height? It is too high (too close to the ceiling) than I would normally do with the picture gallery, but they would be on the same wall, so I am worried that having them end on different height would create disbalance. Is there a rule on this?
@JulieKhuu3 жыл бұрын
No, I wouldn’t match that line at all for the gallery. You don’t want them competing, so best if you treat the two as separate installations Natalia.

Hi Julie, I have watched many of your videos for the last couple of years as I am finally, after many years of investing in my business, building my dream home. After 15 years of delaying and living in my current house (a modest but decent one), I broke ground last week. As you can imagine, I purchased all of my furniture over twenty years, all the things I passionately love, and put them in storage. Many changes and house plans have evolved since the original floor plan, and due to the economy and the fact that I am single, I have reduced my square footage footprint. My style is traditional, romantic, and Mediterranean, with a few rooms more 1950s contemporary; reducing the structure has caused many more interior design challenges, and my rooms will have a more eclectic feel. Your advice has helped me solve many of my design challenges, and I have two questions. First, I have Steven Handelman Studios creating three pendants styled after a photo I found in Europe. I want them over my dining room table. The salesperson there would not give recommended measurements for the commissioned pendants and said it's whatever you want to do. I get that, but I would like a guidance or rule of thumb number. The room is 14.2 by 22.9. My dining table is 49 W and 133 L. The ceiling height is 10 feet. What size fixture should I use? I am planning to place three pendants that are 18 W, but I need to know how long they should be from the top of the pendant to the bottom. I do not wish to make a design mistake, as these will not be returnable since they are custom-made. Also, I am putting the two wall sconces in the room with the three pendants. The measurements are 11 W and 21 H. Finally, how do I reach you to find out the rates for an online hour consultation session?
@JulieKhuu Жыл бұрын
Hi Michelle! First off, congratulations 🎊🍾 That is a HUGE deal and one I hope to attain one day as well 🥳 Custom design is not for the faint of heart, so many decisions to make! I would have the vendor make 4ft chains/ wire for the fixture. Start at 42” above the tabletop and go up from there. Have the electrician install the center one first with your table in place and feel it out. If it needs to be hung higher, start with 2” increments. You have to visually feel it out to know for sure. They can pull the line into the ceiling if there’s excess

One also had the most flexibility and options in paint colors. It’s much easier to choose a rug or major artwork first, then a paint color after. The other way around, one may never find the right rugs, etc., to work with the paint, so end up having to repaint or have mis-matches, like the room you showed with the huge green chairs, peachy walls and red and blue rug, none of which harmonize with each other. I like to use the more highly colored, patterned or decorative features, whether patterned large upholstered items, rugs, wallpaper, etc., that take up a lot of space and make the biggest statement, as inspiration for the rest of the room.

Another wonderful video. my dining area is so tiny , no way I’d have 36” space around my chairs. My place is modern, retro sort of, will be getting a white high lacquer pedestal table 44” round, Ordered (4) gray linen chairs from west elm, then hope to get a spectacular fixture to pull it all together. Hope it all works. Thanks as always for your wonderful suggestions & guidance!

Sounds fabulous Gail! Small spaces can benefit from gorgeous lighting overhead! It will draw your eyes up and make your space seem larger ✨👍🏻

this couldn't have come at a better time! I went to browse chandeliers and light fixtures at west elm with my cousins for their new dining room and we left without purchasing anything because we were a bit clueless. I will definitely show them this video before going back again! :) Thanks Julie!!

Just subscribed because I watched a few of your videos & get so much information from them! You’re so classy & professional. Moving to NC from PA by the end of the year & we are having our home built...exciting but overwhelmed with all the decisions when we pick everything out in 2 weeks! I’ve been on Pinterest checking out pics I like but I really got a lot of good information from you regarding decorating the house. Thank you!

Hi, your comments are really helpful. The ideas on room for chairs and their comfort are particularly useful. Regarding rugs or bare floors, I opine there is also the option of fitted carpets. Perhaps a comment on red painted shades on walls and whether they make food look more attractive? Thanks for posting.
@JulieKhuu3 жыл бұрын
Inset carpeting is definitely a commitment and requires that you design the dining room before the custom carpet goes down for exact measurements. But I do love the look. Red stimulates the appetite for sure, but doesn’t mean everyone can live with red walls. A total preference JB!

Julieeee!!! Yessssssss. Always on the look out, and couldn't wait for today's topic as I am preparing to furnish my living room. I have a 14×12 living room; do you think I could fit a rectangular 10 seaters plus a credenza? Also a 9×12 rug would completely eat the width of the room, so what size rug would be ideal? As always, simply a fan. Thank you Julie
@JulieKhuu3 жыл бұрын
The 9x12 rug is actually a small choice for an 96” (10 top) table. Prioritize your needs Jocelyne- larger table with custom rug or smaller rug and smaller table

Great video. I love the way you honored your mother. Dinning room tables hold many memories. Hard to let go. I have a beautiful Dinning room table which is traditional but small enough for my kitchen nook. I made it cozy by personalizing it with French toile chairs. It’s just perfectly. Ps I do get the Chinese table.. they are heirlooms and art work In itself. Great video

Your Mom holds onto that table, because she loves it. My kids use to say to me, get ride of all that old furniture (antiques) and get new. I'd always say, they don't make furniture as good as they use too. Plus I only buy what I love, now 40yrs later, it's hasn't fallen apart like the new stuff. Great video and info.

Hi Julie. Great and insightful as always. I was waiting for you to mention what the focal point is where there is no wall to feature in the dining space. Notice I said space vs room. If the dining space is between the kitchen and the living room in an open concept what becomes the focal point? A great lighting piece or simple but striking table decor piece? Thanks
@JulieKhuu3 жыл бұрын
Either or Maxine! Both if the centerpiece is low and sculptural 👍🏻😍

I agree with below. Wood stains and how to use them. I’m in the process of buying new dinning chairs. It’s a nightmare. I have an open dining kitchen. I have a wooden sideboard that has an orange tinge and it is solid wood that I know would paint, but I just don’t know what colour to paint it. My kitchen units are red and cream with black granite and sparkle top. I have looked at so many options but still not sure. Love your videos. You look so beautiful. Have you been blessed with your new baby yet? Love to you. X
