Please offer your tips on how to style a dining area when it is part of the living room as in a condo. Older style apartments that have a long narrow room that is living on one end and dining on the other. I not only have this but have small 8’x11’ covered outdoor terrace off the dining area. I love the space but struggling to find a coherent design style for the space.

@nataliaandrievskaya77874 жыл бұрын
Hi Julie, thanks for the video! Choosing shape of the table was an eye opener for me. I replaced my round table by rectangular to host more people but now I also know it better suits the space! I do have a question though - I plan to do a gallery wall in the dining area of the great room (on the focal wall) and I have a huge piece of art that I love above the sofa in the conversational area (dame focal wall) that goes almost all the way to the cieling... Do I need to match upper line of my gallery wall in the dining area with the upper line of the painting above sofa so that they are on the same height? It is too high (too close to the ceiling) than I would normally do with the picture gallery, but they would be on the same wall, so I am worried that having them end on different height would create disbalance. Is there a rule on this?
@JulieKhuu4 жыл бұрын
No, I wouldn’t match that line at all for the gallery. You don’t want them competing, so best if you treat the two as separate installations Natalia.
@AllThingsSoul2 жыл бұрын
Excellent tips for the dining room. I'm not sure about the matchy-matchy dining chairs. I've seen different head chairs at a dining table and I like the look, but all matching chairs really makes a statement, too, as shown in all of your dining room pictures. Maybe it depends on the type of table. I learned that a large statement piece of art or sconces on the wall that is seen when you walk into the room will really define the space! Thank you for that tip! And yes, I'd love to see paint colors for different types of wood.

It makes the dining table perfect for long dinners, for poker night, for doing projects. The ones in my imagination are not as cool as yours, though. Hi Julie, I have watched many of your videos for the last couple of years as I am finally, after many years of investing in my business, building my dream home. After 15 years of delaying and living in my current house (a modest but decent one), I broke ground last week. As you can imagine, I purchased all of my furniture over twenty years, all the things I passionately love, and put them in storage. Many changes and house plans have evolved since the original floor plan, and due to the economy and the fact that I am single, I have reduced my square footage footprint. My style is traditional, romantic, and Mediterranean, with a few rooms more 1950s contemporary; reducing the structure has caused many more interior design challenges, and my rooms will have a more eclectic feel. Your advice has helped me solve many of my design challenges, and I have two questions. First, I have Steven Handelman Studios creating three pendants styled after a photo I found in Europe. I want them over my dining room table. The salesperson there would not give recommended measurements for the commissioned pendants and said it's whatever you want to do. I get that, but I would like a guidance or rule of thumb number. The room is 14.2 by 22.9. My dining table is 49 W and 133 L. The ceiling height is 10 feet. What size fixture should I use? I am planning to place three pendants that are 18 W, but I need to know how long they should be from the top of the pendant to the bottom. I do not wish to make a design mistake, as these will not be returnable since they are custom-made. Also, I am putting the two wall sconces in the room with the three pendants. The measurements are 11 W and 21 H. Finally, how do I reach you to find out the rates for an online hour consultation session?
@JulieKhuu2 жыл бұрын
Hi Michelle! First off, congratulations 🎊🍾 That is a HUGE deal and one I hope to attain one day as well 🥳 Custom design is not for the faint of heart, so many decisions to make! I would have the vendor make 4ft chains/ wire for the fixture. Start at 42” above the tabletop and go up from there. Have the electrician install the center one first with your table in place and feel it out. If it needs to be hung higher, start with 2” increments. You have to visually feel it out to know for sure. They can pull the line into the ceiling if there’s excess

3/10/22: Question - My only dining space is a square area of about 10' x 10' on the other side of a peninsula (that is wide enough to be used as a small breakfast bar for a family) separating kitchen space from dining space. The dining area has a large ceiling fan and light fixture "sort of" centered over the square space. There are three "entries" into this space: the doorway (doorless) from the "back" hall that opens to the side driveway and also has the steps going down to the full basement and rec room area, a six foot wide patio door that opens to steps that lead down to a concrete patio and the back yard (it's lovely to look out at the yard); and a large opening between the living room and dining space. The light fixture in the (sort of) center of the dining space is a very large ceiling fan in a sort of "country" style that is not to my taste. I want to replace it - for the past 7 years - but I am paralyzed by choosing the right thing. I really do want a fan over the table, where I sit and spend time on my computer but also look out over the yard in spring and summer with all the squirrels and birds, and when it is not high summer just having the ceiling fan going on "low" is enough to keep me comfortable and happy. I thought maybe I should just get a pretty light fixture and not put a fan in, but I really want a ceiling fan that isn't clunky and ugly. I also have a very tight (retiree on fixed income) budget - so my options are rather limited. My experience looking online is that the less expensive light fixtures and ceiling fans are usually the clunky uglier ones! WHAT do I do?

Your Mom holds onto that table, because she loves it. My kids use to say to me, get ride of all that old furniture (antiques) and get new. I'd always say, they don't make furniture as good as they use too. Plus I only buy what I love, now 40yrs later, it's hasn't fallen apart like the new stuff. Great video and info.

Hello Julie, Thank you for another great video. I would love to hear your take on larger furniture pieces in the dining room (ie. buffet/sideboard, bar, or similar).

If you have room for it alongside the clearances, go for it 👍🏻

OMG @15:00 When she starts talking about the Chinese pearl inlaid dining table I was like "that's me!" @juliekhuu could you make a vid about how to style that very expensive Chinese dining table for those of us that have to live with this family inheritance/burden? Is there a way to blend it into the 21 century?

I agree with below. Wood stains and how to use them. I’m in the process of buying new dinning chairs. It’s a nightmare. I have an open dining kitchen. I have a wooden sideboard that has an orange tinge and it is solid wood that I know would paint, but I just don’t know what colour to paint it. My kitchen units are red and cream with black granite and sparkle top. I have looked at so many options but still not sure. Love your videos. You look so beautiful. Have you been blessed with your new baby yet? Love to you. X
