How to Measure and Install Custom Window Blinds - Beginners Guide DIY

In this video I take you through the process of measuring for inside mount horizontal window blinds, as well as the surprisingly easy process of installation. For those of you who are unfamiliar with some of the terms involved with the components of blinds, I also start by defining some of the basic elements that make up the window blind, and that you will want to be able to specify when ordering. This guide is intended for absolute beginners so for those of you who have some experience with DIY projects I encourage you to use the below time stamps to help get you to the sections you need.

This is great! Totally feel like I could do this on my own. What sites would you recommend for ordering outside of Home Depot or lowes? Both retailers are out of stock on a ton of lengths.

Thanks for the detailed vid I noticed you did not deduct anything from sides of your blinds before ordering. Most blinds companies here ask that to deduct 5mm of original measurements. Would you recommend this. Could you please do a detailed installation and measurements for a stacker door. Want to install my own roller blind on my 5 panel stacker. Worried about it not lining up.

I have new vinyl windows and was told I couldn’t put my vinyl blinds back up because the warranty on the windows, have you ever installed blinds in vinyl windows, thank you.

I always enjoy your videos. They're very informative. Are there any blinds companies you'd recommend? My new home is closing soon and I'm going to have to order them for an entire 2,400 sf home. I'd love to do the measuring and installation myself but honestly I don't think it would turn out that well if I did it myself. Would love to know if there are any companies you might recommend for window coverings. If my choice is between quality and cost, I'd choose quality. I'd rather pay a bit more if I know the quality will be nice.

What is the minimum depth of the window frame to allow for inner mounted blinds? The frames for our windows were designed by our contractor and the windows are double pained, tilt in windows.

You will want to refer to the requirements for the speicifc brand of blinds that you are looking at, but I would generally say it needs to be just slightly deeper than the headrail and slat width.

What if you need to replace, do you still have t drill holes again?

If you are replacing the entire treatment, you will likely need to drill for new brackets. However, the blinds can be removed and reset without removing the existing brackets.

If the blinds are too long, how do you shorten them?

This is a guide to measure for custom blinds so that they will fit perfectly. If you accidentally measured long I would suggest that you have the manufacturer make the modification. If its just a little long then you may end up with a slat or two extra at the bottom which is not unusual either.

Unfortunately your video does not show the most simple function of this blind which is being able to raise them all up-and-down at the same time how the hell do you do that

The right side cord operates the lift and the left side operates thr tilt. I can't believe I didnt show that! Thanks for watching!
