Becks, I wonder how you gained such in-depth and wide knowledge of this art form? The way you think, speak and organize your presentations is very accessible for me, thanks. 🧶 💜

Really useful - I have just ordered a twist angle/wpi gauge, so thanks very much for the info on how to use it🙂

Thanks for the wpi post. The bloom has recently tricked me and my yarn changed substantially. Enough that I had to choose another pattern to knit!
@TinyFibreStudio Жыл бұрын
Oh no! Well, we’ve all been there and there will always be another pattern to use the yarn for but it’s a bit frustrating when you’ve put a lot of effort in and it doesn’t come out quite the way you intended!

Brilliant - I have always found WPI an in exact science, so am pleased to have that confirmed! Especially in working out what your singles need to be to get the plied thickness you need. Even with commercial yarn - sometimes worth washing before knitting …… John Arbon are, I believe no recommending this (the woman at the mill shop there to,d me) as their yarns are not washed after spinning.

Many good points. I agree WPI can only be used as a ball park figure. As a very beginner spinner/experienced knitter, I prefer to measure the width of the ply-back to get that ball park. This is because I don't think I have enough knowledge to "engineer" yarn for a specific project, since there are too many variables which I don't yet master. For now, I much prefer to work on making the best yarn that I can work th the singles that I spin, and pick a knitting project with the resulting yarn.
@TinyFibreStudio Жыл бұрын
Well said! My quick-reference measurements are usually the plyback samples, mostly because it’s easier to measure that as opposed to singles using a control card. And yes, spin first, pick the project later is definitely a great option!

Thank you for such a thought provoking video, so clearly delivered.

This was so interesting and totally explains why there’s a range of wpi for each yarn weight. This does make things confusing as to how to measure your yarn.🤷🏽♀️

I’m glad it was helpful! There are other ways to measure which I’ll explore in other videos… although (spoiler alert!) sampling and swatching will always give you more information than a measurement. :)

Thank you for braving this subject ,, useful and clear .. ! So from this… spin your sample wash some of your sample keeping unwashed as control to refer to, swatch your washed and go from there 🤔..
@TinyFibreStudio Жыл бұрын
That’s a good summary! I’d add ‘take notes of the measurements’ as well as keeping an unwashed sample as sometimes the control samples can either go missing (!) or relax over time which can be misleading.

Such an excellent video and quite helpful and interesting. A few chuckles also. The sweater (jumper?) you are wearing is gorgeous and no doubt you knit (and spun) it yourself.
@TinyFibreStudio Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I’m happy to hear it was helpful. The sweater/jumper is hand knit but not hand spun. It’s the Strokkur pattern by Ysolda Teague - thank you for the compliment!

Have you done a video on washing fleece please?I cannot find it…if not what do you use as a soap for soaking fleece?

Even before taking into account anything else, I feel like the difference in ratio between a high twist single, low twist ply and a low twist single high twist ply would probably be massive haha (I just do a playback and then guesstimate the bloom based on the type of prep/drafting >_> )

How many WPI is your hair? :) Just kidding. Great video! Thank you!

Or is it measured in TPI….
@TinyFibreStudio Жыл бұрын
😂😂😂 I’d estimate about 1 WPI at the top, 3.5 WPI at the bottom!😁
