Edits: I really hope some of you understand why I have those lizard pictures at the end By “the fire” I mean the exhaust spitting. Also gear skipping is most beneficial on spots you can get air (April 2018) For the clips that I show the gear number, I missed the first gear on almost all of them. I didn’t notice the first shift almost immediately after launching every time. My apologies (March 2019) At 3:50, you can also short shift on top of certain spots, especially when coming off curbs so you can get the boost from leaving the boost spot. It doesn’t necessarily have to be just the beginning of the boost spot to get a good shift (July 2019) 8:40, for max gear “shifting” it’s most beneficial to do it when you are coming down or off something or when you are about to go up an abrupt hump (July 2020) 99% of cars can short shift. The only ones I can think of that can’t would probably be just electric cars (Jan 2021) After playing so much, I would add that the Osiris is a good car to learn shifting with too. I think for me, it taught me how to get the most out of shifting (May 2021) Around 2:40, low revs doesn’t necessarily give better boost. If you short shift right before a boost spot, you’ll be put in low revs and when you hit the boost spot in low revs, you accelerate through whatever gear you are in faster so you can shift through every gear pretty quickly to get to max gear (Aug 2022)

I used the pisswasser to get the basics down for short shifting. Really easy to tell when the revs are high enough

Well I've never tried to delay a short-shift until I've landed, so I'll definitely give that a go! :) Any tutorial / instructional video about GTA Racing with some time and effort gone into it gets a like from me. Great stuff Gyrogue!

Cirrus5005 thanks man, I tried :p also yeah it’s mainly best for jumps, uphill or downhill. I noticed it on Black Dog when I was hotlapping it back in December. For some reason it gives better boost, at least in an Osiris. *edit* also it can skip a gear too which is def better boost

I'm not very good at shortshifting so I find the details and examples of this helpful. I wasn't sure if people were doing it much in lower gears. Your first example in the Feltzer its only beneficial because of all the bumps correct? And secondly have you noticed any benefits letting off the gas longer and slower for bigger boosts?

StarlitShadows it’s mainly beneficial bc of the last jump. Jumps give the biggest boost. Also yes, for lower gears I have noticed that holding it out a little longer helps. The hairpin on Skyline by masapy you can do it there and it helps

Gyrogue so essentially you are just trying to get into last gear before the jump to maximize the boost otherwise little to no effect?

StarlitShadows not necessarily. The jump will give more boost than the others, regardless of the shift. Also with the jump, it is easiest to skip a gear, so you need to try to make the jump the biggest/best shift

Yeah, I've kind of understood the basics of it and use it. But I don't always know when to use it, especially in lower gears because sometimes I lose speed. Other times the boost is obvious. I was able to figure out most of this hotlapping Alesandro Square through experimenting. But this helps explain and clarify a few things. Thanks for explaining. While a lot of folks use it, not all of us are experts. The more info the better in my opinion regardless of the state of the game right now.
