Awesome job on the video... Just did a move from one server to another - AMD to AMD but changed the processor (3600x to 3900x), motherboard, and added two HBAs... If it wasn't for 6.8.x w/nVidia build going EoL from the author of the 'plugin' and having to upgrade to 6.9.0-rc1, it was extremely smooth... unRaid saw all of the array drives even with the completely different SATA controllers. Outside of the nVidia issue, everything worked out of the gate. Just amazingly easy to do. Bravo unRaid!

Great tutorial as always mate! I’ve been running my unRAID server on a HP N40L microserver since like 2011/2012. Great little server rocking 6x3.5” HDDs and 1x2.5” SATA SSD in a very small form factor. Been serving me well for a decade now, but it is getting tired. Now I’m transferring to a new Intel i5-11500 and building in a much larger case to be able to add more drives. So this video is much appreciated, thanks!

Similar N40L here, mine only has room for 5 3.5s internal after modding. This vid has me thinking a bit bigger. Will have to look over what can be done with dockers as I haven't looked much past KODI filehosting and eventually RetroNAS since I put it together maybe 7 years ago. Actually just now going through the phenomenally time-consuming process of shrinking/growing the array to finally switch over from reiserfs 😮‍💨 thanks to Dan's brilliant tutorials 🙏 Sorry to hear about the flooding you've been dealing with lately, Dan 😔

Great video for newbies, i actually did this about 6 months ago and didn't even think about problems i might run into, all i did was move my hdd's, cache drives, plug in the flash drive, and i was up and running as normal. I went from an old Xeon machine to a Ryzen 3600x with basically zero configuration, as soon as i booted up Unraid showed that the configuration was valid and it started right up.

7:32 you didn't explain how to save these settings. To those wondering about this, nano is a linux text editor and you're basically opening up a text file to...well edit it. After you add the line to enable zenstates, you need to press control+O and then hit the enter key. You can then hit ctrl+x to exit nano, and if you wanto to make sure it stuck, open the go file right back up. Once you've verified it's in there, you can safely close the terminal window.

Did not work. Is this only for windows? Edit: Didn't need to hit control+0, only needed to hit control+X to exit then save the file.

I really enjoy watching your videos. Now this time it is even more easy to understand because the music level is reduced. In your older videos it was very annoying that your comments were "disturbed" by music. Please continue and stop any music or set it to a very low level during the explanations. Second, please add links to the next video in the attachment of the former. This would help to find the next and have a help to follow up. Third, could you please add a comment at your older videos if they are no more valid because of the 6.9.X update? I am often confused when I find one and look at it and after minutes I find out that you have explained an old Unraid version which I have never seen. Or you could remove retired videos.

Great videos, and glad to be your newest subscriber. My dilemma is that my USB key failed, so I do not have the ability to "migrate out" properly. Also, it was an old 4.4 version that I can not find anymore, not that it would matter. I have decided to upgrade the machine and have the newest stable version running. My fear is that just moving the old drives in will cause a loss in my old data. Any thoughts?

great video! Cant wait for more on the 6.9.x series. Do you have a video on how to install unraid fresh but keep the data on the array? Like lets say i've made a mess of my unraid installation by installing too many dockers/plugins/etc and I just want to start completely fresh but I don't want to lose any data on my existing hard drive array; is there an easy way to completely start fresh using the same USB drive and unRaid activation serial tied to it; wiping any and all dockers/VMs/plugins/configurations/etc but keep all the data on the array the same and remake the shares?

If I was going to move to a newer server, and eventually move to a whole new set of disks (currently 1x8TB parity and 4x4TB array disks, intending on using 1x10TB and 2x10TB in future) am I better off just moving the existing hardware as demonstrated above, and then move the data across to the new disks as a separate procedure?

All was working fine. I upgraded my case and motherboard so I moved my drives. Unraid doesn't see all of the. drives. I added the Disk Location plugin. The two 16 TB Seagate drives (one is data and one is the parity) in the Not Found Section passed the SMART test, so they have power and they both have new SATA cables as well. However, they both don''t show up in the array (or as unassigned drives). Any ideas on how to get them to appear? This is last issue from rebuilding. What I am I missing? Thanks in advance.

You can't believe how timely this is! I'm in the middle of doing this right now. I'm just waiting for a few parts to arrive so I can start the migration. I do have one question, what about systems with multiple NICs? My old server has 4x1G NICs on the motherboard and I have assigned them to different uses. Generally, one is used for the NAS and the rest are split among different dockers and VMs. My new server has 2x10G on the motherboard and 4x1G on a PCIe card. What if anything should I be looking at/for?
@SpaceinvaderOne
@SpaceinvaderOne 3 жыл бұрын
What i would do is leave all how it is with the nics. But when you first boot the server you can boot it in GUI mode with monitor connected. Then you can goto settings and network and set the nics correctly under the interface rules. Booting in GUI mode means if for some reason the main nic you used to use with the nas (the one you would connect to unraid from your pc) wasnt the one you expect it doesnt matter as you can easily change it in gui mode. I hope that makes sense. Thanks for watchin :)

It worked with only a small problem. First I don't think I've ever used the GUI console mode and it didn't work for me. The screen just came up blank. maybe the monitor I was using was too old??? Anyway, I had 6 NICs and just moved the cable to each NIC until I was able to ping the IP of my server. Of course, it was the last one :) So my old server had 4x1Gb NICs and the new server has 2x10Gb plus a 4x1Gb on a PCIe card, unraid assigned eth0 thru eth3 to the PCIe card and eth4 and eth5 to the 10Gb NICs.

What about the static ip address wqhich has been created during installation. Isnt that tied with the specific nic port which also has a specific name (for example esp7s0)? If someone during VM creation would use cpu host instead of kvm, wouldnt that cause trouble with the migration of the VM to another system which would have different cpu? Wouldnt for instance, a Win10 Vm had installed specific drivers according to the cpu passed through to that VM? So after migration wouldnt someone need to unistall those chipset/cpu drivers and install the ones who correspond to the new CPU? At 5:48 the asus pci card is the 10gb nic one? Also adding zenstates line which disables the power states does that mean that the cpu now cant idle at all? (Even though I noticed you ve disabled one of many states specifically c6 Was that for hibernation or sleep?) Last you should continue the video a little more and show that the linux VM did start up and recognized the card Thank you

@scotthoffman8682

Well, I am not Ed but I usually clean up any files by using the move command, update my dockers and plugins etc. Then shut down dockers/VMs and anything that might make changes to the cache drive(s). Then I use my SMB (windows) connection and copy the system and appdata folders to a backup share that I have for this purpose. Now I can shutdown the array and do what I need to with that cache drive(s). When I am done configuring my new cache drive(s) I start the array. Everything is still turned off, I then copy system and appdata folders back, run permissions on them, then turn it all back on. Did I miss anything Ed? I am pretty sure that I learned all this from SpaceInvaderOne some time ago and he probably has a video for that.... Good Luck and Have Fun!
