Randomly decided to ask Google how to milk a cow and this is the video that came up. I think this is pretty cool. I've never milked a cow before but I feel like I could confidently do it. Don't even have access to a cow but I want to volunteer. Thanks for this. There are a lot of people would like to have their own farm animals but don't know the first thing. Also, this is really helpful for explaining to my 5-year-old that Eggnog does not come from chickens. Older boy convinced him it's chicken milk. LOL.

I love the brown Swiss and how gentle they are. That's what we have at our place in southern Utah. I used to milk them by hand. We would feed them grain while they were being milked and the cows loved it. If you took too long getting ready in the barn, the cows would start trying to bust the door down to get in. There is nothing like the fresh raw milk after its chilled.

I love how you are so relaxed in this. This is how I would like to do it. I have a cow in milk, but she isn't trained, and we rotationally graze, so bringing her to a specific spot is dang near impossible, as is penning up the calf. She is top dog of the herd though, and looooves grain. I'm tempted to just try in the field with a jar, lol. If only to get her used to it.

It could work-- at least as just a way to get her used to things. :) Gotta start somewhere!

Awwwnn 🥰 that’s so nice watching you milking the cow 😊 I grew up watching milking cows and I always thought interesting. They would tie the tale and legs before milking. They also would let the calf drink the milk first before milking and would leave the calf close to the cow while milking it. And also they would have some music playing in the radio 😁😂. Not sure if this is a good way but it worked 😁 I’m new to your channel and I’ve been loving the content 💕

I love your videos so far. I’m doing research before purchasing a cow; without procrastinating as you put in one of your videos lol. We are thinking a Jersey. It seems to me that if you are confident but caring, showing your cow that you are the boss but are respecting her also, that works just like with other animals.

Yes! Holding up, grrr, the calf is drinking my cream but as you said, I would rather have the flexibility of only milking once a day :) Thanks for the video!

How did you train her to stand still for you? We are first-time learners on a first-time cow mama and would love some advice. Thanks!

We use to place the basket between the legs and direct the stream in the bracket. I miss to milk a cow and we used the milk foam or batter to make the hand slide easy .

I just bought my first dairy cow a jersey heifer , 17mths old and supposed to be pregnant. She’s coming from a breeding farm that is exclusively jerseys and they are a commercial farm that sells their milk here in Canada. They are handled, and are wire fenced trained. My question is with it being my first time, best training plan to get her halter trained and used to me touching her everywhere etc and getting into a stanchion. Do you have any advice or other videos I could watch for this? I’ll also be using a milk machine

So thinking about adding maybe a couple cattle to our property this fall (not sure if that is the right time or not). I currently have dairy goats and love that for soap etc...but wondering if a true dairy cow if the calves are also good for butchering. Appreciate any direction! Thanks for all you do!!!!

I just got my first jersey cow and calf on Sunday! She has never been milked so I am taking this time to just let them get to know me. She was super friendly and gentle at her old home, but seems scared of me and refuses to let me near her with the lead (I led her fine at their house, right into my trailer!) advice?
@theprairiehomestead6 жыл бұрын
oh my goodness-- CONGRATS! Give her time-- and have lots of patience. Animals are very sensitive to your energy and how you carry yourself, so if you approach her with tentativeness, it's likely she'll respond in kind. It took me several weeks to built trust with our first cow after we got her (she had never been milked either). I put her in a small pen first and got her used to letting me touch her with a stick, then graduated to my hand, and then the halter/rope. Just stick with it and she'll come around!

Very helpful! We've had a certain milk cow for five years and never succeeded in making her into a pleasant milker. She is overly protective and when she kicks she really means it! So we tie her leg. She's a Jersey, Dexter and Black Angus cross. We've heard that Dexters have big attitudes and that Black Angus are very protective... have you ever heard that? What do you do with a cow that insists in being unreasonable? Thank you very much!
@theprairiehomestead6 жыл бұрын
Wow! she definitely sounds like she has an attitude. Some animals (like some people, haha) are just prone to crankiness, so if she's been this way for 5 years, it's likely it's become a habit by now. I think tying her leg is definitely a good option. Black Angus certainly have a reputation for being a bit on the wild side, so I'm guessing that is playing a part!

The Biegel Family I've heard the black angus can be a difficult milker as well. I think they just have more difficult personalities.

Yes, they usually hang out together and get along decently well. :)

Excuse my ignorance but how do you make the milk drinkable after you've drained and chilled it for 24hrs? Is there another process to it?
@theprairiehomestead6 жыл бұрын
We drink raw (unpasteurized) milk for its health benefits, so there isn't another step after straining and chilling.
