I worked at a small dairy (60 or 70 cows) that bought 6 Brown Swiss just to compare to the Holsteins that made up the rest of the herd. They wanted no part of humans touching their udders. The barn had steel posts supporting the hay loft with enough room for 2 cows between posts. After a day of near combat conditions when milking those Brown Swiss cows. The following day I let the 2 cows beside them out and went into the empty stall to prep the cow for the milking machine on the meanest Brown Swiss. She meant to kick me into my next life but her foot hit the steel post instead of me. The kick was so hard it shook dust off of the floor joists of the loft. The rest of that milking went smooth as silk but that cow had a pretty bad limp when I let her out of her stanchion. After that day she acted aggravated when being milked but NEVER tried to kick me again.

Hello, my daughter bottle fed a Jersey calf, it's 2yr and just had it's first calf, btw very tiny but can stand. Kid's are struggling I just shared this video with them, it brought back memories from my youth. Same farm Mother milked Blacky for year's, she was a great gentle cow who loved milk time, would come running. Sadly, I give it 50/50 kids will be successful, I've suggested buying a second day old calf, because there's a lot of milk! Thanks again, for the Memories!

You’re right, cows have long memories and do not respond well to aggression. Temperament in a cow is so important- I have sent off several heifers that proved to be impossible to work with. That’s after weeks of patience and using some of the tricks you show in this excellent video. It certainly helps to gentle them as a growing calf and I find they remember this and are easier to work with later on. Keep up the good work, Greetings from Sussex, England.

That's great, i'm a vet doctor and actualy it's very important to restrain the animal while dealing with it.. Thank you for advising people not to take the risk with the dangerous animal and sell it to butcher

Great video!! We've had kicking cows before and have tied off the leg closest to us and after a few times of that she stopped kicking...thankfully!! Also, when we hand milk we use 2 pails. One with a lid that we set behind us and the one we milk into. We periodically pour the milk into the container with the lid so that IF by chance a foot or other debris gets into our milking pail, we just give that to the critters and keep our milk clean!!

@@fourseasonsnorth They also make a device called hip huggers, which go over the back an basically use a long threaded rod with hoops that fit onto the top hip bone , when tightened up it put some pressure on the hip and prevents kicking

Ived used to do the 1st restraint (ived got 30 heads of dairy cows , back then but only one is a kicker)it works well too, but being kicked by a cow is not fun , I tell you 😄👍..

What often works with first time heifers is turning slowly half around and give the cow a good look in the eye RIGHT after she kicks and then continue with milking. She will feel the attention as a punishment. Her focus will shift from the milking process to looking at You wether You wil turn around again. It takes some courage as for a few seconds You can no longer see her foot. It sometimes feels like a heifer will keep on kicking forever, I however tell myself the animal thinks I will never stop trying! Now its easier for me to stay calm and cope with her behaviour and make het quit.

I love cows. I've never been too near a cow, never milked one, probably never will. But to imagine that some mistreat them, is upsetting.

Something that worked well for me while hand milking was to wear a toque or a beanie and lean your forehead into the cows flank while milking. I'm not sure why but it did have a calming effect on the cow. Perhaps it makes the cow feel a bit like a calf is nursing???

I appreciate your efforts but don't ever think or say of sending them to butcher.. they are part of our family so always keep finding ways to deal with them in better ways and if still u not able get milk out of her then let some calves drink it and u can try side by side
