***** About Venison for Dinner *****
Thank you for joining us on this crazy journey! Our family- Kate and Marius plus our five kids, have always enjoyed living a homemade life whenever possible. Moving 1000 miles north in 2017 to Northern BC, Canada upped our game even more. We live on a 34 acre homestead and get a kick out of things like raising our own meat, dairy and vegetables. Theres plenty of failures, you’ll be sure to see those here too. We’re a homeschooling family who believes life is the best teacher but we do hit the books in winter. I’m so glad you’re here, I hope you stick around!
We put out 2 new videos every week! Wednesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

Back in the day, I had a sweet little Jersey named Molly. I also had four kids aged 2 to 11. I convinced my kids that Molly wouldn't give milk if anyone but me was around the barn. It was easy to hear the kids, so I knew when to ask Molly why she wasn't giving me any more milk. Didn't take too many times before I could count on having my milking meditation time just for Molly and me. I did love that cow, short teats and all. Sometimes her milk would be nearly half cream. Cream biscuits, whipped cream cake, butter, spooning cream on fresh baked bread...we ate well.

Great video. Love the Jersey cows. We had a Brown Swiss cow that would give about 2 1/2 to 3 gallons a milking. About the age of 16 I had to start milking at night when dad went on evening shift. Some tips from my dad. 1. Keep fingernails trimmed close. 2. Our cow would kick from time to time so dad taught me to put my head into her thigh. She cannot kick unless she shifts her weight to the back leg on the other side. When she shifts that weigh, be prepared to move. Usually a soft voice or gentle pat would prevent a kick. In spring time when the green onions were out, the milk went straight to the pigs. I just saw the kickbar part of the video. So fancy. Richie (an east Tennessee boy)

Love these tips from your dad! We don't have wild green onions here, so I guess thats a good thing?

@@VenisonforDinner you are welcome. Good that you don't have wild onions. Its smell coming off the milk is bad. Grandpa said that it helped the cattle shed their winter coat. Not sure if I said but we love in East Tennessee near the Smoky Mountains. Will look for more of your videos. Richie Ps. We would let the calves have half of the milk until there were about 200 lbs then sold then. It gave us some cash money.

You’re doing it the right way as far as I’m concerned, you can still use a stool, But as long as you’re close and comfortable that’s all that’s necessary. Your milking technique is correct, much better than a lot I have seen on here, believe me I have never seen people pull a nipple clean to the ground like I have on here. Especially with those Third World countries, it’s almost like they’re tearing the bag off of the cow! Makes me so mad the way they abuse the animals

How do I know when to stop milking if I’m calf sharing? I’ve been afraid to milk her all the way out for fear there won’t be enough for the calf.
@VenisonforDinner
@VenisonforDinner 2 жыл бұрын
they hold back, you can pretty much milk as much as you want and they will still have enough. Or just leave one quarter for the calf unmilked. (this is a fun way to take care of a hard to milk quarter, as long as the calf can nurse it well)

I never work directly behind cows like you did. You either really trust her or you don't value your teeth. Getting kicked is no fun.

This more of a demonstration than how I normally milk. But, yes, I do trust this cow.

I just got a milk cow that has been calf sharing and I took the calf off today about 5 hrs before I milked her and I had a heck of a time . This is the first time trying to milk her and I got only 4.5 cups and it took longer than you milking both cows completely. I found your comment on holding back so helpful because I feel like I failed .She is a Charlie’s jersey cross with teats between your two cows. I felt like I was stripping her for most of the time and I’m not sure if that’s not letting down or just my hands not in the best position . But I’m going to stick with it before I get a milker machine . Thank you . Did you feel it got easier as you grew the muscles necessary? She is also a first time Calver who is just a sweet heart and the last owner only milked her a handful of times before deciding that milking was to much for her so I feel for the first day without calf and in her new stanchion I finished yesterday it was still a success . That being said I so appreciate your video and it gives me hope . One question tho high up on her udder like the base of the teat there is a small abrasion. It’s not red and nicely scabbed but should I be doing something to that or only if it looks infected ? And do you “lotion” your girls after milking or what do you recommend?

Huge apologies for the delayed reply!! I’m a big fan of putting a salve on things to help them heal. Right now in the barn we have a jar of ‘amish burn and wound salve’ thats really sticky and has honey in it. It stays on well.

Is it ok to squeeze both teats at the same time, instead of the right-left-right-left pattern? I start out R-L-R-L, always seem to end up squeezing both simultaneously..

Either way is totally fine, but squeezing at the same time is more awkward I find.

Thanks for this demonstration! I have a small teated cow and this is incredibly helpful. I do strip her quite a bit which I’ve wondered if it’s bad for her teats. It seems like causes her tears to dry out and have flakey skin. Is that an issue! I still enjoy hand milking but I’ve considered a machine if it’s harmful to her.
@VenisonforDinner

Stripping shouldn’t harm her teats. Do you use a lubricant for the flakey skin?

Do your hand joints ever hurt from milking? Mine ache so bad! Especially first thing in the morning, they are super stiff and sore. As the day goes on, they loosen up and then just feel bruised. I have no idea if this is normal since we've only had a milk cow for about 2 months and this just started happening about a month ago.
