I would get in the habit of using roughing and finishing passes so you can do 1-2 roughing passes at a more aggressive speed and feed and a single finish pass at a less aggressive rate. Will also allow you to avoid that first initial light material removal pass you had. Another good thing to note about dovetail cutters is you can’t take a finish depth of cut pass, always has to go to the floor level on every pass. But would be beneficial to leave 5-10 thou on the floor when roughing with the endmill initially so the dovetail finishes the floor and you have a clean floor finish

how do you know what's the maximum material you can remove? do you keep increase the MMR until the dovetail cutter fails?
@RambozoClown6 жыл бұрын
Production strategy would be instead of taking the distance moved in X and divide by 4, take the volume of material removed and use a quarter of that. Not sure if Fusion could do that without a little help, but you can always duplicate the cut and make adjustments if you are making a lot of parts and want the best MRR, tool life, finish, etc.

Of course you post this a day after I received my dovetail tools and made my cuts =)

I'm a big fan of your channel, and I think it's great what you are accomplishing here. One thing I'd like to point out with this video is a word of caution when using the lead-in to extend your cut. I'm not familiar with Fusion360, but most CAM software use the lead-in to add cutter comp. This MAY lead to a gouge or an incomplete looking cut, depending on the length of the lead-in and the amount of the comp. It's not usually a big deal, but I'm a firm believer in limiting the possibilities of errors with good machining practices.

How about a tutorial on the counter part .. the male dovetail. I am struggling with creating toolpaths for a male dovetail.

Hey John, great stuff. Quick question, can you make the dovetail cutter feed down the angle of the dovetail? That way it's only taking a full engagement cut for the final finish pass?

i don't usually hit the like button but when i do it's NYC CNC :)

Is the a way to create a dovetail op by cutting using only the button 1/2 or 1/3 of the cutter until you reach full axial depth? For example step down .1" step over .015" until you hit the dovetail wall and then it drops down another .1 and repeats until the entire surface is machined? As John stated in his method the engagement increases with each pass, but this method it would be consistent chip load.

Would it be better to reduce the depth of cut with each successive pass of the dovetail cutter to account for the increased engagement on each pass? How would you do that in Fusion 360?
@garygriffin31146 жыл бұрын
Like watching you program. Maybe a spring pass with dovetail at end.
@bluedeath9966 жыл бұрын
Can you set a constant volume per pass? Taking smaller cuts of greater engagement with each pass. Is this even a sensible thing to do?

Seems like an easy part to hand code. I wonder where the trade off is between writing by hand and using CAM software?

Awesome video man, I’m a big fan! Do you have a video in how to draw a dovetail using fusion 360? If not, would be great if you made one 😉

How would you get the cutter to exit the part by the same entry point? Say you where cutting a T slot with a dead end and you wanted the tool to come back to where it entered.
@akprototypesllc67364 жыл бұрын
what if 2d adaptive is applied...and Fusion knows the tool geometry. Does "optimal load" account for stepover reduction knowing that the tool will be more engaged? Will it create a toolpath to keep consistent volumetric chip load? This is unique for tapered cutters (as your mentioned) since this chipload will change without change in Z...only x/y.

Every time I try and select the lines using alt for the 2d adaptive clearing I get a warning that says "empty toolpath" even if a draw a rec sketch on the surface to try and define the area I get that same warning.... What gives?!?! Thank for the video!

How to use 2d Adaptive Clearing(or this Slot cutting technology in Fusion) as a Facemill Operation with for Example Superfly or big Endmills ? Big circles Face milling?A lot of space in one pass and a nice Face ! Is that possible? Sorry for my bad English! I am from Germany

Could anyone tell me the difference b/w a 5 axis machine and Mill turn ...? In terms of axis and where these machines can be used ? Thank you.
@occamssawzall34866 жыл бұрын
Subin Peringave 5 axis usually refers to a vertical milling machine that has 2 rotating axis on the table, set 90 degrees from each other. A mill turn is primarily a lathe with a main lathe spindle and has a secondary milling head spindle Millturns would be used on long generally cylindrical in shape parts like a an engine cam shaft. A 5 axis VMC would be for mostly square/prismatic shapes parts that have features at different angles.

I had heck cutting a female picatinny rail profile. I ended up drawing the tool (AB Tool) in the form tool section and then used the trace command to make the tool path. Does Fusion not recognize the geometry of a custom form tool? I couldn't get it follow the model.

Could you do an actual cut to give us some help with Speeds and Feeds. I'm having a heck of a time with welding in 7075. Using the Harvey 0.500" Dia w/ a 40 deg inclusive angle. I'm on a Series 3 1100

why need cam. how they did dovetail before there was no dovetail or cams lol
@EverettWilson5 жыл бұрын
Cutting a dovetail with a manual mill is similar. You still use a dovetail cutter. A shaper wouldn't use special tooling. You could also do it with a band saw or a file if you really wanted to. But CAM works just fine.
