Intresting as allways. As a Belgian TV director i have to say that you have a great cameraman. He always is on the right place with the right angle. Close and wide enough when needed. He shows me exactly what i want to see and what is important to see at any moment. He has to know you very well Rob to show us what you have on your mind. Good team, Chapeau !

From the way the rings and pith is in that wood, I would guess that that is a limb from a tree. Having cut many large trees and harvested the limbs, that is the way the rings grow in limbs.

After over a decade of not touching my band saw, due to clutter in the garage and also to fear (I was always afraid of the blade snapping), I resurrected it during a garage clearing (shut in due to coronavirus). I had to get a new belt and set of tires and learn how to tune it up, but now am cutting with it and loving it. The tree trimmers cut branches for me to play with and your video is opening up some fun possibilities. Thanks.

Three years ago trees in my area were devastated by an infestation of both the Gypsy moth and Northern tent moth caterpillars. So many huge beautiful oak trees could not survive the onslaught...stripped bare of their foliage, they struggled to survive. The next two years resulted in too many standing dead oaks. Tree removal companies thrived. Cordwood for wood stoves , abundant! My neighbor had 3 huge trees taken down. I got to cut and split for firewood. Some trunks were 30" in diameter! The grain was so straight I felt it should be in a saw mill instead of my log splitter! I saved some straight and true logs hoping to one day mill myself. Now i know how to attempt it! Thanks for this video.

Ok, so everyone wants to know what I do with the the saw dust? Well it all started years ago when I was deep in the south American rain forest looking for the perfect piece of wood to start my first project (only back then I was known simply as Dave.) While walking through the woods I heard the distressed cry of a South American white cheeked spider Monkey. I knew right then I had do something, so I leapt into action, running to its cries. There was a fierce battle raging between him and a Black Caiman! Knowing this poor spider monkey only had seconds to live-I jumped on the Caimans back and fought it for what seemed like minutes but according to the Chachapoyes elders it was hours. They thought that the Caiman had me, but, at last, I reached out and found the branch of a Verawood tree. Now me, being a peacefull person, I could not kill the poor Caiman so even in death’s grip I was able to hypnotize him with the scent of the freshly cut Verawood. After that the Caiman and I had a heart to heart about not eating endangered speces. And ever since then, on the day of the anniversary of our treaty, I send the Caiman a little Bag of Varawood to remind him of his agreement not to eat endangered species.

I have about an 8" diameter 6' log of cherry a buddy gave me a few months ago. I do not plan to make anything long out of it, so I was thinking to cut it in half and let it dry out that way. @RobCosmanWoodworking
@RobCosmanWoodworking 3 жыл бұрын
Well depending on how long is long???? If its unmnagabke at its current length you could consider cutting but you are correct checking, or preventing checking is the big issue. Of course it takes a LONG time to dry out as a log (1 inch per year) which is why to cut and sticker it.

Very interesting video! Smart to joint the bottom of the log to prevent rolling at the bandsaw! I do have two questions though... 1) I'm not a fan of how green it ends up turning (this is all subjective of course), but I love the look of it when freshly cut. What wood would be very similar to this look that won't change colour? 2) What does Super Dave do with all that sawdust? Great video though! Very enlightening!

Hi Rob, surely running the round(ish) log over the jointer like that doesn't guarantee a flat surface "out of winding"?
@RobCosmanWoodworking
@RobCosmanWoodworking 3 жыл бұрын
You wouldn’t think so, but after I developed the flat spot it wasn’t rocking on the infeed table.

trick is to transfer the weight to the out feed table as soon as possible.

Nice work Rob! Do you ever laminate planks together (such as the Vera wood) to make them wider resulting in a higher yield (layout) for your saw handles. If you epoxied the planks together you wouldn’t have to worry about the handles failing in shear.

This wood is super expensive even in South America.....then add the special export permitting both from South America and North America.plus shipping costs so on and so forth.....this wood as most South American hardwoods are very prone to checking due to tension....this small log was well treated ...
