Last week I bought 200ft of High Octane pipe, fabric, and accessories from FDM. I have installed the first 80ft section in my yard, next to my driveway. This will drain multiple back yards from flooding rains. I live in SE Michigan and the soil is Clay, and old neighborhood back yards have very little slope. I am lucky I have 1% slope. I can't wait for the next storm to come, to see these amazing products work for me. I am very tired of having a flooded basement multiple times a year. THANK YOU! FDM.

Great video FDM! You said you used sand on top of the fabric and no topsoil. Did you just put the seed on the sand and then the straw mulch? I was thinking of mixing sand and peat together and then seed and mulch. I want quick percolation to the French drain. Any experience using peat instead of topsoil? There are sprinklers in the area.

@gerardpawloski9344 Mixing any form of organic matter with the sand will definitely benefit you in growing grass. Because this is a ditch bottom, we expect there to be a lot of sediment. We already know we're going to get the organic material that the grass will thrive and grow well with, so there was no need to add additional organic materials.

I've watched many of your other videos where tou had trees nearby and you never put a root barrier. Why did you do so this time? Also, in other video, you never have a gravel base
@BearBig70

He explained the gravel below the pipe is to catch the extra sediment in this specific app. I'm just not aure how to determine of I have high sediment, or not?
@BearBig70
@BearBig70 Ай бұрын
Root barrier is for preventing the tree roots, already hitting the ditch. General rule for most tree roots is they radius out approximately the hieght of the tree.
@Jon-e7w
@Jon-e7w Ай бұрын
@@BearBig70 but isn't there sediment everywhere? Eventually, it will make it into the system. So why not apply a gravel barrier in all installs? For the root barrier, I've watched other videos where the drain is installed directly next to a tree, where they had to cut through so many roots to build the trench, and in those installs, a root barrier wasn't installed.

This root barrier costs $250 per 20 feet. Many projects simply do not have the budget for that expense.

Silly question I'm sure, but what would happen if you try to utilize the same principle as a professional french drain by a simple trench (as if you were going to put in a PVC pipe), lay the landscaping fabric, then fill it with the appropriate rocks only sans any sort of piping? If flooding is so infrequent and generally not extreme as well as the total length from the target area to the lower drainage point being a simple L-shape < 200' from point A to point B? No trees nearby, seems like any blockages would pinpoint themselves, upon so just stir/dig up the stubborn area whenever it presents itself?

Love your videos! Just bought one of your downspout cleanouts. I was curious if you recommend burrito wrapping and back filling with stone a solid non-perforated pipe? Thanks!
@FRENCHDRAINMAN
@FRENCHDRAINMAN 24 күн бұрын
We don't wrap it with fabric. If the ground is unstable and I have reason to believe it's going to leave bellies, we will put stone on the sides of it. Most of the time, we get a nice, flat-bottom trench, and we just lay that solid pipe in and backfill it with the native soil.

Back of house has existing pvc downspout but has a cap. Would you use this or run new line with the pro kit?
@FRENCHDRAINMAN
@FRENCHDRAINMAN 28 күн бұрын
It depends on where it goes. Usually, we would run a camera through it to see how damaged it is. Most of the time, we just run our 3-inch pro kit through a 4-inch PVC line as a sleeve to reduce labor.

This was helpful as your videos always are. I am getting confused. So here is my area of concern. I live in the south with that poor hard red clay dirt. What should I do with the pipe in my trench. ……. Put it on the ground then add gravel or put gravel down put pipe down the gravel again? It’s a tough choice because of the red clay. My gut tells me to put it in then the gravel. I can’t figure out what is the best choice.

@2:53 i been doin’ this since 1974; perhaps you might avoid speculations 😊 Graduated rock sizes (3 1/2 leach rock, 12” derp, 24” wide( pipe in middle, followed by 8” deep 1 1/2” drain rock followed by 3-4” pea gravel with a 2-4” pervious cap pavers or a true “cap” ( a poured on site: semi permanent, semi- porous surface material [glued-pebbles] or a grate running the entire length of the trench.

We have to conduct a site evaluation to design our drainage systems. There are pros and cons to the way French drains are built. Some methods are more favorable than others, given the site conditions.

@@FRENCHDRAINMAN That's the hard part - good eyes and brain. Experience, etc. And there are tons of contractors whose evaluations are no different from mine, even before learning about this. I think I'm going to start small and simple, with a yard drain only and if I need it, I'll put in a French drain the following year.
