Thank you so much for this video! It was a lifesaver and worked perfectly! I followed the cheat sheet instructions for the Mapei Porcelain Tile Mortar - I had the Mapei Ceramic Tile Mortar, but the instructions on the bag for both were the same, so I figured your instructions would be the same. And it worked perfectly! It was the first time my sister and I had ever laid tile, we were doing a subway tile kitchen backsplash. We had to mix three separate batches of the mortar, and each batch came out perfectly, and the tiles stuck firmly on the wall. Yay!! So happy with the results! And the pot time was great, on our last batch we ended up taking a really long time and it was nearly 3 hours. It was definitely drying by that point, but they still adhered.

Thanks, I'm currently doing kitchen backsplash. I'm using Mapei large tile mortar due to 12x24 inches rectified porcelain tile, so I'm using the porcelain tile dosage. For that, it seems just right but as I'm new to do this the very first time, I had to do it fast. It covers only about 4 full tiles as I also back butter them. I go slowly so I take time. Found the process of mixing requires patience before you can get the peanut butter like mix to work on it. I couldn't use the premixed ones due to not handling large tile besides being too expensive. I try to reduce few ounces to see if it's smoother.

I like to get it to be a little thicker than a peanut butter viscosity almost like a salt water taffy type of viscosity. I always use less water for a batch and then add a little at a time to get the viscosity I want. Not sure if that is the proper way but my projects have been solid since using this approach and they have lasted 7 plus yrs and counting. The waiting 10 minutes and then stirring again is key for setup with versabond thinset mortar.

Thanks for the chart and video! I'm using Schluter All-Set, is the ratio appropriate for membrane applications or installation of tile? The full bag provides two different ratios.
@DIYTileGuy2 жыл бұрын
Good question. The ratio is meant for tiling. If you are installing Ditra or Kerdi then they say to add about 2 additional quarts per bag so that's about 5 additional ounces of water per batch of All-Set

@@DIYTileGuy Nice!, yeah I did my first batch yesterday. It says on the bag to do 6 to 7 quarts water to a bag (50lb/22.7kg.). So I just divided 50lbs by 6 to get 8.33 pounds to 1 quart, but I found I had to add a bit more water to get the consistency right, as it was definitely too dry. So I'd say maybe 1-1/2 quarts to 8.3 lbs. But yeah that worked out to be about right for me. Maybe if a guy tried 7lbs to 1 quart, then that would be a good starting point. :)

If you choose not to take those precautions for yourself, you are choosing for yourself that you would rather take the risk to your own health than deal with the cumbersomeness of precautions. I downloaded the cheat sheet and the ratio looks way off for what I'm using (253 gold). The ratio on the cheat sheet works out to be roughly just over 1/10th of a bag but calls for 1/5th of the water? I'm guessing it would have the consistency of an slu mix at that point. I've certainly never added 10 quarts to a full bag before.
@typ044 Жыл бұрын
Just mixed up some 253 and the water quantity in the cheat sheet should be closer to a pint than a quart for the dry weight of mortar called out on the sheet.
@DIYTileGuy Жыл бұрын
Remember, the components are mixed by volume and not by weight. Also, don't assume the manufacturer knows the right ratio for their own products. Some do but some are notoriously off
@typ044 Жыл бұрын
I'de say like most bagged cement products 75% of them are off and always on the conservative side. Also can vary by bag/batch. And I have to admit, after watching the vid and downloading the sheet enough days passed that when standing in the garage and pulling up the sheet on my phone I had already forgot you did it by volume using a fluid scale. I used the digital shipping scale in my garage, my mistake. Definitely threw me off because after weighing it out I could tell just looking at it that it would be way too much water so I just did the math instead. Volume would obviously be quicker and easier. I've always just done it by eye but after your vid popped up in my recs I started thinking it would be nice to eliminate variables. Thanks for replying and pointing out my mistake, I'm not a fulltime tile guy but its far from my first rodeo so I'll just go back to eyeballing it, I realize now that coming across this vid got me over thinking it but its a great starting point for first timers though so good job on putting in the time to do this and post it.
