Can i use isopropyl alcohol instead? I can't find this at my local hardware store
@DIYTileGuy
@DIYTileGuy Күн бұрын
I don't think they allow it in California anymore. I've never tried isopropyl but it may work. Other alternatives are soapy water or glass cleaner, which sort of works, or you can tape off the joints, silicone, and remove the tape.

I think your thinset mortar mix after slaking is too thin, particlarly if you use LFT (they will sink) or wall tiles (they will slide down)

Good effort and would have been a convenient guide, but what a pain to find among too many ads and then find out you have to sign up to get it once you do finally find it. I can easily weigh and calculate conversions and ratios for whatever amount you need, it is not rocket science, more like cooking, just like housewives are capable of recipe adjustments.

Thanks, I'm currently doing kitchen backsplash. I'm using Mapei large tile mortar due to 12x24 inches rectified porcelain tile, so I'm using the porcelain tile dosage. For that, it seems just right but as I'm new to do this the very first time, I had to do it fast. It covers only about 4 full tiles as I also back butter them. I go slowly so I take time. Found the process of mixing requires patience before you can get the peanut butter like mix to work on it. I couldn't use the premixed ones due to not handling large tile besides being too expensive. I try to reduce few ounces to see if it's smoother.

WRT the backer rod…I have read that to perform properly you don't want your silicone to go all the way back of the joint (I.e. the thinset level), you only want it to be on the opposing edges of the tile. Is that part of the purpose of the backer rod?
@DIYTileGuy
@DIYTileGuy Ай бұрын

One other thing you may try on the install next time is instead of adding strips of thin paper on the studs, use something like the old wood lath strips or ripped down pieces of wood probably 1/4 in thickness nailed to the stud faces. This will bring the GoBoard past the top flange of the tub where it can just drop down sitting on top of the tub. You could still use your 1/8" spacers just sit them on top of the tub below the lip. You will use less tube sealant, no need for mesh tape, and the top of the flange is completely covered all around by the GoBoard then thin-set and tile. No chance of it leaking because the board is past the flange and not sitting on top of it.

Great information on how to make sure you have enough material, or in some cases, not too much, in areas to create a uniform level/and or flat floor. You should definitely create a video showcasing how to prep, layout the grid, pour, move the material, and finished floor at the end! Alot of youtubers show them pouring it but do not show the level/flatness at the end, because I'm guessing it really is neither of those when they don't take the time to do it right.

Hey! I have a couple questions if you don't mind! What kind of mesh tape did you use at the bottom by the tub flange? I see there are different mesh tapes for different applications, cement board etc. Also, I'm going to tile the bathroom floor using a Schluter ditra decoupling membrane - Recommendations on how to waterproof between the membrane and the bottom of the tub skirt? Thank you! Finally, I want to significantly improve the waterproofing in my entire bathroom, including the walls. Any recommendations on this?
@DIYTileGuy
@DIYTileGuy 3 ай бұрын
I think a better way of sealing the tub flange is to use a banding and seal it to the tub flange with the backer board sealant. This same sealant can be used to seal in-between the bathtub and uncoupling membrane and elsewhere. Also, the banding can be used to cover the uncoupling membrane seams and flashed up the wall if you really want to waterproof your floor well.

I am concerned that when using the 1/2 x 1/2" notched trowel that you need at least 1/4" room to wiggle the tile sideways when setting itand that's fine for all tiles except when you get against the end of a row and the last tile only has 1/8 "against the wall and 1/16 on the grout line against the previous tile on the other side. Then you cannot wiggle sideways to collapse a 1/2" ridge. I thought you could change the ridges directions horizontal for that tile so you can wiggle forward backward instead of sideway but now your ridges extend the full length of the LF tile and that is more risky to leave trapped air. I am preparing to install 15"x30" porcelain tiles 11 mm thick and hesitate between trowel sizes. If you could pitch in would be good. Thanks

@@DIYTileGuy Nice!, yeah I did my first batch yesterday. It says on the bag to do 6 to 7 quarts water to a bag (50lb/22.7kg.). So I just divided 50lbs by 6 to get 8.33 pounds to 1 quart, but I found I had to add a bit more water to get the consistency right, as it was definitely too dry. So I'd say maybe 1-1/2 quarts to 8.3 lbs. But yeah that worked out to be about right for me. Maybe if a guy tried 7lbs to 1 quart, then that would be a good starting point. :)

I've been following your bathroom renovation projects and appreciate the insights you share. I recently conducted a detailed exploration into the safety and installation practices concerning foam core backer boards, specifically focusing on the critical role of wood blocking for secure grab bar installations. Our findings highlight the potential risks and structural integrity issues that can arise from omitting wood blocking, even with the most reliable materials and techniques. Given the importance of safety and durability in renovations, I thought this information could be beneficial to your projects and audience. Incorporating wood blocking can significantly enhance the strength and safety of grab bar installations, a detail that's often overlooked. I'd be happy to share our findings and discuss further. Keep up the great work, and thank you for sharing your knowledge with the community!
