Thanks for the feedback. I need new equipment, no laptop no nothing and I'm just afraid that the year i get what I need, these guys won't be offering free mastering anymore.

@@chrishamaseb5443 well it's a free sample master. You don't get the whole song. They let you hear it for free before paying which believe me, is SO helpful.

Great video as always. I have a question thought. How do you choose to eq by key an instrument? I get it for a kick or any percussion inst but for melodic instr the fundamental is always moving.

Detailed and intresting to the point as always ..know you teach mixing mastering ..but recording needs to be good..so i need suggestion ..i have a big room partly wood partly concrete 290 sqft ..not treated and a boxy 60 sqft room planning to be treated ..which one would you pick to record in ?
@shaneforshort
@shaneforshort Жыл бұрын
It's gonna depend on what you're recording but imo the smaller room would be better to record in as it should result in a "dryer" sound albeit with some buildup of frequencies in the bottom end of the spectrum, but you should be able to EQ the troublesome frequencies in a predictable way after a few tries. Big room sound can sound great though, depending on the sound you're going for!

Record in the smallest and dryest room. Mix in the bigger room(but treat it well and place your speakers to avoid cancelations). A rough guideline can be to have your head placed 38% of the rooms length from the front wall. 🙏

Why do you call it mixing, when you are talking about processing? I mean, whats the mix here? The “Wet/dry” mix of the original bass and the processed? I dont get why people call this mixing. This is processing. Mixing comes into play when you mix several instruments / vocals together

That's a funny observation. My guess is that, like many terms an idioms, the first historical use made perfect sense but as the process evolved, the terminology didn't. When the first EQ was added to a mixing console, it was no longer just a mixing console in the strict sense of the word, but the word denoting the process had already been established. Some English speakers still refer to a flashlight as a torch. Some Spanish speakers still refer to a carro as a coche. Those illustrate usage in the process of change, but "mixing" hasn't really begun to change yet. Thanks for the excuse to combine my rarely overlapping interests in audio and linguistics! Audio "engineers" (which has nothing to do with engines) are allowed to be nerdy, right?
