I have to agree. If you are going to paint with the color matching method, Mark has created the ultimate system. Look no further. Mark has a depth of art history knowledge that is second to none. His artwork shows it, too.

Just...WOW. I'm 58 and been painting on and off most of my life. I was NEVER, other than the color wheel, taught EXACTLY HOW to mix colors in school, and as a result, I fought the whole way through the painting, often resisting the urge to destroy it. I can now breathe a HUGE sigh of relief as your technique has made painting a joy rather than hard labor. Thank you Mark :)

One of the best things about Mark's videos besides the intellectual content of course - is there is no music and no opening graphics...he just gets to the point....and no joking around either. He's thought of everything.

Mark, Please more and Thank you for all your tutorials that you share! the dislikes have to be from people that really don't want the awesome information you share. I left the college course 20 years ago because of the way they taught how to paint with oil. I just discovered you because of being laid up, and have to sit. Thanks to my surgery, I now know more now than when going to College. You break it down in such a way that simplifies it so much that I am now going to start again (as soon as I heal). I have been looking forward to waking up and turning on more of your videos! all of them. I can not say THANK you enough. I wish I could just buy everything you sell. But until then, again, thank you for the tutorials on making the tools. I will be buying your paints etc. I just love your love of teaching and style. You are the BEST!

Im in my second time watching this. I applied this the best I could to a half done oil painting and I saw such a startling improvement that I am taking the time to apply the whole of the draw mix paint instruction for the next year. I have two oil paintings that I have to finish then I will be taking the time to learn this method in full. I applied only parts to the oil painting and my family even commented on how much better I was painting.

Thanks for this video, Mark. This is so good. Because you are a master artist, you may realize how good this video is. But I can tell you, it is the most helpful video I've ever seen on painting in oil, wet into wet. Gosh, maybe its THE best instructional video on the internet. Certainly, it's the most important video for beginning artists to watch. I watch other artists videos, and I hear your voice speaking to me from this video, helping me understand what that other artist is trying to say, but is not quite saying. I paint, and I hear you speaking to me. You make it all clear. I know what to do to lighten my values in my step. Two choices. I know what to do to find the tone from my step. Six choices. This makes mixing your tones and values so simple and clear. Doing it from life. Not from a quirky formula. Not from a color chart. FROM LIFE! And maybe the best thing is your seemingly complete lack of ego. You don't want to convince us how much you know. You want to convince us that we, the unwashed masses, CAN do it, if we just get out of our way and trust what you tell us, which is the knowledge of experience. You are a master artist and a master teacher. Again, thank you, thank you, thank you. At last I get it.

Very useful color mixing guide. Clear and simple explanation. I have issues wondering which colors to mix to make lighter colour and which colours to mix to make darker colors. I love the part that you said if it's a lemon, mix with yellow and if it's a purple book, mix with purple. The color wheel guide is very clearly explained. The location of neutral colors help me have a clearer understanding of where to put them. Love the observation method and mixing colors step by step to get a good mix. It is such patient work but it really pays for the effort to make the best of an artwork. Thank you very much!

@Retsam1912 жыл бұрын
Both white and yellow paint can be used to make the tone lighter. The yellow paint will give a warmer orange colour, the white paint will tned to make the colour more cold by bringing out the blues in the colour. Thats why he has white over near the blue side of the spectrum. it is neutral, but it brings ou the blues already present in the paint.

@connordios14284 жыл бұрын
What do you mean? I would love to hear an actual exception to anything he has said in this video. Obviously he says you can’t mix certain intense greens or fluorescent traffic cone orange etc. But all his color mixing rules are reliable 100 percent of the time- as long as you are using his pigments and following his method correctly. Any “exceptions” are clearly outlined by him and honestly are almost never encountered.

As a ceramics restorer I'm trying to match colors on ceramic pieces which are often over laid with other streaks or masses or brush strokes of more translucent colors on the original paint job.... makes it difficult sometimes to figure out what the underlying color is. But this color wheel of yours has made the most sense to me. I think I'll practice getting my colors with my oils and then try and translate them to my dry pigments. I also have the problem of mixing my colors in a glaze in order to airbrush onto the piece, and the glaze is always drying as I mix. Thanks for the tutorial!

This color checker is brilliant, and how you prepare the tones for your picture. I have tried to evaluate through using my camera. I expose the picture to my liking which means that it can be underexposed or overexposed. I can then see in lightroom which parts are under or over and thereby pure black or white. Further I can take my picture into an app called color companion and analize the rgb values in each part, that gives me the opertunity to mix that color in the app and see it on a big surface for comparison. This color checker makes more sense as you are working in the same lighting conditions versus that the camera can be off in white balance for example and the backlit screen can give a diffrent or more vibrant pictur of the real value.

My KZbin algorithm put you into my world this morning and it's been very informative and well explained thanks. Love the pointy colour checker tool, what a useful gadget, I wonder who first thought that up, where did you first see it please? In my job I sometimes have to match the colours of old lime putty mortars or plasters on old houses. Unlike gypsum plasters I find the lime ones to be somehow warmer, they also absorb carbon dioxide and will improve a rooms acoustics. I slake & make my own mortars & plasters and adding crushed & sieved charcoal or different colours of stone dust, I even have some green sand. You haven't got a huge range of colours with lime paints and the nightmare colour to be asked to paint is red, or a terracotta always gets tiny streaks of red in it. Mortars have to be mixed weeks or months before a job, which makes it stickier (pick up a trowel of mortar, turn it upside down and it should stay there. The Romans used lime mortar that was about 6 years matured. The right sand has to have small different angular bits of stone and other particles, plus the finer sand to be just right for my pointing (putting mortar between stone or brick) jobs. The colour can vary slightly with every ton bag of the same sharp sand from the same area of the quarry. My Boss was a fine lime maker with samples of 20 different sands even a black volcanic sand. To see if you have the right sand try to ball it in your hands, the damp stuff should make a ball you can throw. To really check it, half fill a glass jam jar with sand, fill up with water, put the top on and shake it up. Leave it to stand for 24 hours and there should be 4 to 6 layers when you look the next day. At school I mostly had rubbish teachers except one, Mr Richard Godrey who was a brilliant Potter and good all round artist who inspired and helped so many.

But since i found one of your video's. a week ago, i became addicted it. so thanks again. i give up oil painting , although i was eager to learn it, because i couldn't find someone as you, you make me eager to begin, didn't reach your video how to prepare the canvas yet. Sir, from this video i understand that if i was painting something i should mix a various degree of color, i though i will use only one united color, and suppose the amount which i mix was not enough , how can i remember and reach the same first mix again, and suppose i don't have good colors , how can i turn my humble colors to be not exactly as yours, it's impossible, but at least to be good, thanks again for all your efforts, appreciate it.
