I found your site on how to mix greens for landscapes and I just finished mixing Yellow Oxide w/ Ultramarine and omg.. thank you. A thousand thank you(s). It's the green I've been looking for and is versatile enough to mix with reds and to lighten gently with Zinc. It's the color I've been looking for. The closest retail color I've found is by Williamsburg, Courbet Green but it has very heavy black undertone. Thank you again.

I keep forgetting that you can desaturate colours using the opposite colour on colour wheel. Sometimes it’s better than using burnt umber or sienna. This helps heaps to get rid of that cartoon colour appearance that greens tend to do. You have better control of texture and saturation. Thanks for the reminder!
@SamuelEarpArtist5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ollie. I find burnt sienna good for desaturating blues as burnt sienna is a dark orange. I haven't used burnt umber lately as I find it can muddy your colours too easily but you can definitely desaturate colour with it. Burnt umber is actually a dark dull yellow, you can see it when you add white to burnt umber 😀

Makes sense to have a minimal palette so the painting is harmonious. Great greens for NZ's countryside. Do you have any thoughts for dry grass areas (I live in Australia).
@SamuelEarpArtist4 жыл бұрын
I have painted grass in Australia and have used mainly yellow oxide (or yellow ochre), burnt sienna and titanium white. You can soften the colour by mixing in a little green.

Samuel Earp Artist Thanks for your reply. I appreciate your support. Just one last question if I may as I'm colourblind and would benefit from your feedback. When painting an area of dry grass, what colour would be best to use for the initial dark block-in? Should it be a darker version of the final colour by using more burnt sienna?
