One of the trickiest colors to mix in a landscape painting is green and its one that causes artists the most problems. Mix your greens right and they can look unique and vibrant but get the wrong and they can look acidic and harsh.
In this painting tutorial, I will show you how to mix some basic greens that you can use in a landscape painting. But instead of me spending the whole video in front of my paint palette, I've mixed the greens as I paint a landscape that features rolling hills and trees from the Northland region of New Zealand.
While this artwork is painted in oils, you can also use acrylics.
In this painting tutorial, I cover the step-by-step process on the following:
Colors
Palette footage of me mixing some greens
Blocking in the painting
Adding details
Final details
If you would like to paint along with this, check out the link below for the written notes that accompany this video. Feel free to copy the painting and copy/use the reference photos that are in the written tutorial.

I LOVE greens in a landscape; it's my favourite colour. I worked in offices for years (I mean decades..) and would have gone crazy with all that grey if I hadn't surrounded myself with green plants and colour). Now I'm retired and I'm painting. I really enjoyed your tutorial; it had so much in it. Wonderful teaching! 👍😍

Thank you thank you thank you!!! This was the most useful video I have ever watched on painting. You really explain what happens to colours in a landscape, why they look the way they look and why you use certain colours to paint them with. And the simple statement that "green doesn't travel well over long distances" is the best and most concise advice I ever got from anyone. Liked and subscribed!!!

I keep forgetting that you can desaturate colours using the opposite colour on colour wheel. Sometimes it’s better than using burnt umber or sienna. This helps heaps to get rid of that cartoon colour appearance that greens tend to do. You have better control of texture and saturation. Thanks for the reminder!
@SamuelEarpArtist
@SamuelEarpArtist 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ollie. I find burnt sienna good for desaturating blues as burnt sienna is a dark orange. I haven't used burnt umber lately as I find it can muddy your colours too easily but you can definitely desaturate colour with it. Burnt umber is actually a dark dull yellow, you can see it when you add white to burnt umber 😀

I found your site on how to mix greens for landscapes and I just finished mixing Yellow Oxide w/ Ultramarine and omg.. thank you. A thousand thank you(s). It's the green I've been looking for and is versatile enough to mix with reds and to lighten gently with Zinc. It's the color I've been looking for. The closest retail color I've found is by Williamsburg, Courbet Green but it has very heavy black undertone. Thank you again.

@@SamuelEarpArtist I started up with Steemit again. Like you, I've been busy with the art, so I've cut back on social media to be more productive. I'm looking around for other crypto platforms whose token can be traded for BTC. I also would accept crypto for payment. Haven? I'll have to search for that.

Haven is a mobile app made by Open Bazaar. It works in the same way. I don’t think there are many people on it yet but it was only launched a few weeks ago. I put some of my art on there...you never know 😊

Hello, great demonstration and painting, thank you. What size (in mm) dagger brush are you using for the tree foliage and highlights? And, is its cut curved or straight?

I'm always perplexed at how to layer colors into wet paint without becoming muddy and maintaining crisp highlights.
@SamuelEarpArtist
@SamuelEarpArtist Жыл бұрын
If you are adding additional layers of paint to your oil painting it is often best to let each layer dry first so you don't end up with muddy colour 😊

Sam, since your painting on oil primed panel/canvas, as I understand it you can't use acrylic over oil. Am I wrong? Now, about the painting...super video on mixing greens, and your painting is fantastic - just like all the other paintings I have seen you do. Great work, Mate.

Thanks George, I have to confess I've not thought about that, so I don't know if you can paint with acrylic on top of oil primed linen. You'd be fine with acrylic primed linen or canvas 😀

Painting acrylic on oil is a good way to facilitate peeling. Not a good idea!

The sap green tubes available at art stores are usually just a mix of pigments. Save money and learn how to make your own sap green hue. Sap green was originally an organic pigment made from buckthorn berries, but buckthorn berries are not practical to use for mass produced paint.

I had no idea sap green was made from buckthorn berries. I have to confess I have never used sap green, I always mixed my own 😊

Thanks. I am using Liquin Original made by Windsor and Newton...it thins the paint and speeds up the drying time 😊

Makes sense to have a minimal palette so the painting is harmonious. Great greens for NZ's countryside. Do you have any thoughts for dry grass areas (I live in Australia).

I have painted grass in Australia and have used mainly yellow oxide (or yellow ochre), burnt sienna and titanium white. You can soften the colour by mixing in a little green.

Samuel Earp Artist Thanks for your reply. I appreciate your support. Just one last question if I may as I'm colourblind and would benefit from your feedback. When painting an area of dry grass, what colour would be best to use for the initial dark block-in? Should it be a darker version of the final colour by using more burnt sienna?

Have you ever tried using cobalt teal (PG 50, PB 28) pigment for painting? The pigment family is close to primary cyan, but it leans closer to green than phthalo blue.
