It can add air bubbles to the mix and can weaken the mix,plasticisers are better.

Hi madam in this case I suggest you to use the mixture cement sand and stone consistency of 1 cement, 2 sand and 3 stone proportionately. Welcome I am south african of Indian ancestry too, kunjani mama? From zululand

This type of cement is for laying bricks and pasting walls, I suggest you follow what Jerry said

In Australia, during 35-45 degree Celsius days, we use a tiny amount of sugar in the mix, to delay drying time.... Not allowed on site either...illegal....like beer on site 😆

Lovely stuff. It’s sad but I love mixing up a pile of mortar like this to do a small job. I find the process and the texture of the mortar relaxing somehow. Am building a low wall for a flower bed atm.

Do it. You can always use videos as a reference. I am going to try it out on a bbq. Just been learning how to cut bricks too.

I need to mix mine more thoroughly because mine is still a bit sandy and doesn't get that smooth texture like yours. I'm no builder and only doing a small block wall next to my garage. Thanks for the advice.

As a complete bodger I mixed by hand for a 3m x 3m blockwork lean to I attempted and it nearly killed me. I resorted to a decorators mixing paddle on a power drill mixing it all in a big bucket, haha. Fortunately my son in law eventually loaned me his Belle mini mixer which was so much easier. The sight of a shovel and mixing board brings me out in hives now ....

im new to this, just recently relaid my patio, and thinking of relaying a brick wall, didnt know about the fairy liquid trick. will tescos own do? :) and youre right, no mixer here, so all by hand, is a lot of work, good tho i think.

Have you built any round raised brick flower beds because this will be my first brick project and you seem like a good teacher because you explain every detail. I know I need a step by step vid so I don't balls it up and get exactly the result I have in my mind of at least damn near close. Any help will be appreciated so I don't make a complete arse of myself because this is in my front garden and all 👀 will be on me

Hello ! Thank you for your video ! It's very clear !! One more question. It seems like your builder sand is softer than what I find in Paris. We use 0/4 mm sand for bricks. 0/2 mm is for plaster finition coat. Do you Know the granulometrie of your sand ? Take care of you !! A french rope access technician brick laying With your advices !!!

Great little video this very helpful. Would I use this for a wooden fence post, as I'm putting a fence post in an awkward position in my garden against a leaning block wall, and solid block wall surrounded by soil.

Hi Stu. I really admire your work and was looking for some advice. I have an old chimney breast I'm pointing up and have read about a lime mortar mix for use with older bricks. To be honest I was just going use a mix like shown in the video. Any thoughts on that or doesn't it matter? Thanks

Whatever you do you need the mortar to be softer than the bricks, if they are old bricks they might be quite soft.
