I learned more about colour theory in this video than in decades!

I learned about the value of transparent colours, and now appreciate how so many artists love them. Many thanks, that video was a blast!

I have sepia, burnt umber, burnt sienna, yellow ochre, raw sienna, and three greens on my palette. I spend money on these not because I couldn't mix them but because I use a lot of it and it saves time. I don't spend on people telling me how "brown isn't a color". If I was doing abstracts I would be inclined to worry about high chroma. But I do mostly landscapes and portraits which need lower chroma to look acceptable displayed under a variety of lighting conditions. Other than that, very good presentation.

Did you realize that the Radiant line of Gamblin paint has white in it. Radiant blue is made up of PW6 Titanium white and PB29 Ultramarine Blue. So if you are mixing a “Radiant” blue to brighten your sky you are adding white.
@reginaldforthright8056 ай бұрын
Correct. These bright pigments are so strong you can easily add a lot of white before they dull (high tinting strength). Phthalos are basically unusable without white. Quinacridones, benzimidazalones also strong tinters.

Does this apply to watercolor too?

At 35:46 no palette colors are listed on your board. Then they are abbreviated on the left side of the board. It is difficult to read your abbreviations. What are the colors in your palette?

Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Yellow Deep, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Orange, Perylene Maroon or Cadmium Red Deep, Quinacridone Rose or Permanent Rose, Ultramarine Blue, Manganese Blue, Viridian Green. He didn’t mention the acronym next to CO, but I’m assuming it’s a transparent alternative to Cadmium Orange which is opaque.

Fact check: gamblin's radiant turquoise already has white in it. From their web site: Pigment: Phthalo Green, Phthalo Blue, Titanium dioxide, (PG 7, PB 15, PW 6)

As far as economy (time and money), including more earth tones makes sense as they are the cheapest colors. Mixing a mid gray with cad orange and cobalt blue is madness. You could make a brick red using a base of red oxide and a dash of cad red. Or a base of cad red and a dash of raw umber. And many of these earth tones are usable out of the tube, they’re natural colors for landscapes, where you rarely need much chroma.

Almost everybody agrees that Ultramarine Blue is not a true blue because it leans towards violet. But what about Cobalt Blue, which some say leans neither to violet nor green? Also, Cobalt Teal is a true blue according to the CMY model. It's all very confusing.
@reginaldforthright8056 ай бұрын
It might work for printers but cyan doesn’t work as a primary in paints. You won’t be able to make violet with that. Cobalt still leans red, just not as much as ultramarine.

pthalo colors are like cooking with too much garlic...impossible to ignore...and overwhelms any other flavor...gets into your hair, skin, you smell like a garlic for days...😂

If you mix with white first they work fine

Just don't eat the cad yellow snow, don't rub it in to your eyes with sircular motions either.
