I think people go overboard with high pass filtering these days. Everyone learning to mix has that initial revelation when they're told "high pass the crap out of everything except the bass and the kick and your mixes will be a lot cleaner." So they're slapping HPF's on everything at 150Hz and above, but what you end up with is a brittle, tinny sound that's lacking in warmth because you've just slashed most of your warm frequencies away. I rarely high pass anything above 80-100Hz, and if I'm looking to prevent mud build up I just use a low shelf to attenuate the lows without cutting them out completely. That way you still retain some warmth and body in the mix whilst still keeping the lows tight. Another mistake people often make is in engaging high pass filters at too many points in the mix chain. For instance you might have a bass track that ends up in a bass bus, and you not only HPF the original track but you HPF the bus too. This is a big mistake - filters introduce some phase issues and the more you use them, the more noticeable those phase issues are going to be. If you have multiple tracks going into a bus, just filter the bus. Or if you have to, just filter the tracks but not the bus. You're going to end up with a far more solid, less phasey sound.

+jpinnyc thank you so much 4 months i cant figure out the phase problem that happens with me when i hpf tracks and send them to a bus then i hpf the bus and i didnt know why there is always phase problem you saved me thank so much

That M/S tip where you dip the mid frequencies of the stereo plucker to give space for the vocal it great. It is so easy to understand now that the vocal is mostly center. Could there be a mono compatibility problem by doing this? I often boost the center frequencies when the volume gets too low of some instruments when switching to mono, but that the opposite action.

If i had a great amount of bass and harsh frequencies for a VST sound (i don't get the right knowledge on setting ADSR, filter etc.) Have i use the mid/side or not? Which's a good solution after some HPF? I don't understand how to approach for "cleaning" it, the sound is too much break down after touching some frequencies ;(
