I think there's an option to create a 'clean prefix,' or something like that. It recommends you do so, DON'T do it, that fixed it for me

There's a workaround for the "installing on the main hard drive" situation. The files can be symlinked. So the files can exist on the SD card, but the Bethesda titles, MO, protontricks, the Deck itself, all think they're on the main drive. Essentially, the folder on the drive is just a hard shortcut to the files on the SD card. It might take a bit more backend terminal work but, it's doable.

"Tale of two wastelands" mod can be interesting for you, too. It combines Fallout 3 and New Vegas using the New Vegas engine. With that you are able to play Fallout 3 in the Vegas engine and move from Vegas to Washington and back. You can use all mods from New Vegas. Some are even modified to use for he mod itself.

To everyone running into the "no prefix" issue. I got around it. Download the most recent MO2 release. Do not create a prefix until you are running the MO2 installer. When running the installer you will get a dialogue that tells you how to create an instance. During this exact part of the process then go into Steam > Fallout New Vegas > Properties > Compatibility. Set to Proton 8. Run Fallout New Vegas and then exit the game. Return to MO2 and complete the install. The issue for me seemed to be creating an instance before running the installer, rather than creating one during installation.

​this happened to me, I couldn't find the location. So I started a game and created a new save, then searched for .fos files and found the two folders where they appeared. I then moved the ones I knew were the saves I wanted (they have the name of your character in them) into the location where the one save was. Well, Steam Cloud is on by default, and when you downgrade your game, they become corrupt as a new save CANNOT work with an older copy anyways.

How do i get the nexus site to send mods to the manager? Every time i select mod manager download, it opens some program with an icon that is a k on a gear. The mod manager is not an option in the list that shows up. So for now my only option is to manually add each mod. I also can't finish the tutorial because i can't do what it wants me to do

If it asks you, before that screen, to clean your current game prefix, select "no". Selecting "yes" actually cleans what you had done with the proton version.

You didn't cover this but when installing from the Mod Manager browser page a pop up apears saying to "Select an application to open 'x-scheme-handler/nxm'". I cannot figure what to do here and cannot get anything to install this way. Is another app needed for this or am I missing something obvious

I'm not sure what I am doing wrong. fnv works perfectly whereas f3 won't even start using fose. As far as I can tell I have followed the instructions to the letter and have tried several work arounds. I just cannot get FOSE to function but NVSE on fnv works perfectly. I just don't understand it and need help. Edit: took me months later to find a solution. Install MO2 first (the latest version (the one in this video is now outdated and doesnt work)). Follow the tutorial and all instructions. Install the anniversary patcher from nexus mods. Install fose from nexus mods. Run the patcher. Viola fallout 3 with mods now works. Weirdly enough though the game will only launch in game mode not desktop mode. So do all the tinkering on desktop then switchback to game mode when ready to play.

I tried it with 3 as well previously and it didn't work for me either. Game is old and ancient. If you want to play fallout 3, I would recommend looking into the tale of two wastelands mod for new vegas which allows you to install the entire fallout 3 in the new vegas engine.

So I got protontricks, ticked the boxes in flatseal, I uninstalled new vegas to install on my internal drive probably about five times and when I try to install the .sh through the konsole I get an error saying it was canceled with a bunch of files being removed through the konsole. whats up with that ?

sadly no matter what i do, i cannot get mod organizer to install. it just keeps saying it can't find the prefix for new vegas. i even completely reset my steam deck and fresh installed everything from scratch, still no luck and the same error. i do not use an sd card and i have tried using older versions of everything based on others having similar issues to no avail. i guess i am just stuck on vanilla fnv on my deck unfortunately. still, cool guide, thanks for the info and i'm glad others are having fun with mods on their handhelds.

Just as a note, you're not supposed to run the game from NVSE; you should use the regular launcher at least according to a typical download. IDK if that's different on the steamdeck. What about manual install mods like the numerous script extenders? I haven't gotten my steamdeck just yet, but I just ordered it.

This worked for me for New Vegas, but not Fallout 3 GOTY. I got it on the deck hd, and ProtonTricks, and Flatseal changes made, ran the game in proton 6.3-8... but the install crashes. "operation canceled, check terminal for details" There's a whole bunch of lines of "Cp: Not replacing /home/deck/...." And the last thing is INFO about removing linux installer winetricks.... Any ideas? I'm 100% sure F3 is in the main directory, and it worked with NV... so I gotta be close. Help?

@@SamWatsonTV I had this after I had the popup to create a clear prefix and clicked yes. That was the wrong thing to do so I uninstalled protontricks and started again from the beginning. When prompted with the option again I clicked no and it worked. If you watch Alex's Skyrim mod video it doesn't skip over that part and you'll see what I mean!

Followed and worked for me for fallout 3 goty. I had to use the latest version of mod organizer and compatability with 8 instead but everything else was the same and is running with no issues including script extender. The edited part is making it more clear I'm using the at the time latest version of mod organizer

@javieralejandro3773 like you can't get any mods to work or just the script extender? You have to make sure the order matches the games and if not change it so it does. If you're getting the prefix error you have to uninstall the game and reinstall.

That let me install the mo2 successfully without any issues. Will try if it works for other games having the same issues later.

Fixed it. It's weird after the installs it reset some settings in-game. I had to "disable 360 controller" in the game settings. And that did it.

Man i remember back in 2020 i modded the shit out of fallout new vegas and i need to re do that one day but with fallout 3 and new vegas combined with the mod tales of two wastelands who allows to have both games into one launcher and have the same character, mods and everything for both games which is amazing.

I have followed your guide but when I click run I get a message saying failed to initialize renderer. I have tried in game mode but it just stays on the mod manager itself without a window for the game showing on screen
