Great tutorial. It's reassuring to know that other people are experiencing the same frustration about the new big picture mode. Overall, I like that they updated the aesthetics of it, but like you said, everything feels so much more complicated. It's hard enough because sorting out the differences between action sets, action layers, button chords, mode shifting, and virtual menus is complicated to begin with. I spent maybe two or three hours the other night just tweaking around with this stuff, and I just could not for the life of me figure out why my third-party Switch controller's gyro wasn't displayed as an input. Turns out they don't display gyro for third-party controllers, so I had to figure out how to tell Steam to read it as a first-party Nintendo controller. Small things like that and all of the sequence-sensitive stuff (i.e. have to remove the mode-shift from where you created it on the buttons FIRST and then you remove it from the button that's supposed to activate mode shift) are super annoying. I wonder how many people utilize Steam Input, though. My guess would be that the majority of users don't, and so I wonder to what degree Valve perceives dissatisfaction with the new big picture mode, especially after everyone's been loving the Deck. Hopefully, they'll keep updating it and refining it. Maybe they prioritized the hardware and thought the Steam Input was "better not perfect than not finished". Seems like they did that for the dock, too.

Glad you liked my tutorial! My hope is that as the steam deck gains more popularity and as fans of Keyboard/Mouse only games want to experience something similar on controllers, steam will update and improve the layout settings. The game that really got me into customizing controls was System Shock 2, which doesn’t even have controller support but it was so fun playing it on a Dualshock4 and tweaking the controls so they were just perfect. I used the gyro to lean around corners, the touchpad for menu navigation and I could mode-shift to change ammo types and use different hot keys. I hear they’re working on an enhanced edition of that game to release with a remaster of the first System Shock. Hopefully if it gets more attention, more people will have a similar experience to me and give feedback to steam so they can do better.

Can you help me understand how to do this new mode shift to make the L1 my button chord? I guess I'm just confused with the new scheme and since the game I play doesn't have controller support, I want to make sure I'm familiar with how to do this so I'm safe to play in the future.

What I love is that there is zero documentation about the new controller layout. Anyway, when I click create mode shift, well, nothing happens, it doesn't get created. "Create Mode Shift" is written in the button field, like it is a button, but that's all. EDIT: Oh It was glitched and none of my actions were working anymore, backed out and came back and it now works. I can't believe how worse it is. It was already a shi*** UX but now, even though it looks better, it is not easier to use. But I have to say that this tool is still very powerful. We just need proper devs working on it. EDIT1: Lol, I thought I saved my new layout but in fact, I backed out so much that it didn't save anything and I'm back with the original config. Not even a warning or a "Do you want to save your modified layout THAT YOU JUST SPENT 2 HOURS TO MAKE?" 😂 EDIT2: I just lost everything again. How the f*** do you save your changes? EDIT3: Oh God you have to Export the layout and then, only then, it will ask you if you want to save it or create a new one. WTF Valve! EDIT4: Nope, even by saving or exporting as a new layout, it doesn't keep my changes. I give up with this crap for now.

I managed to make it work. I had to export it online, sharing it with community or it wouldn't save it.

Thank you! I’d really like to use mode shift to turn my left joy stick into a scroll wheel. Any idea how to do that? When I go through these steps and select scroll wheel (for zooming in and out while building), it doesn’t work. It’s driving me crazy!

I followed the tutorial, but mode-switching doesn't seem to work when I play PSO2NGS. I created a mode-shift for the face buttons on my Xbox One controller; each button is supposed to register as a number key on my keyboard; my mode-shift button is the left trigger. But when I hold down the left trigger & press a face button, nothing happens.

Can you explain me, why you want the right bumper to behave like the left bumper while you hold the left bumper? I mean you already hold the left bumper, so it won't make a difference if I have another button that does exactly the same? Or what am I missing here

It’s just an example but there are use cases. If you want to make the left bumper the button chord for all the other changes you make, you’ll still need a way to press the left bumper normally. So in a game where left bumper by default is “throw grenade”, you can make it so left bumper does nothing except change the behavior of the face buttons. And if you still want to be able to throw grenades, you can do a button chord with left and right bumper. If you don’t need all 4 face buttons to change, you could make left bumper + Y throw grenades instead or something like that.

I love this video! We are kindred souls. I have been playing swtor with Xpadder since 2011. Can you find a way to keep Right Click held while using the joy stick as a mouse? (Trying to not hold down Right trigger every time I move the camera) Thanks for the info. Mode shift baffled me, but this makes sense!

I tried it with a radial menu and it's not working :(, virtual menu is set, right joystick is set to mode shift and mode shift button is set to right bumper, which is set to regular press, radial menu button type is touch release. I don't know what i'm doing wrong please help, radial menu doesn't show up, steam overlay is activated

A similar thing happened to me with hot bar menus not too long ago. It’s no secret that a lot of their UI is still broken and the only way I was able to fix my hotbar menu problem was to delete my custom layout and make a new one and hope the issue didn’t repeat. I encourage you to seek help on the steam forums and to play with it yourself before making a new one because I know it can suck resetting all your changes from scratch but our hands are essentially tied until steam fixes it which feels less likely as time goes on.

I need help! some games require track pads to use in game features. I'm playing ghost of tsushima with a CONTROLLER that has NO trackpads, but in order to navigate to waypoint using "guiding wind", I have to swipe up on my trackpads. I've been trying to mess around with the layouts, figuring out how to emulate this action but there is no away I could somehow bind "guiding wind" to any button since "guiding wind" doesn't show up on the action menu, does anyone know how to fix this? 😢

@@khoiduy1151 I’ve not played GoT on PC but honestly I highly recommend a DualShock 4 or DualSense controller for PC gaming. It’s easily the highest quality controller at its price point. Xbox controllers don’t even have gyro. And trackpads are amazing for custom keybinds. But if that’s out of the question, I imagine the PC controls for the game might have a keyboard key that does guiding wind? You’d probably have to look that up yourself or look online at forums for the game. But if there’s a keyboard button that does guiding wind, you could bind a mode shift button to the keyboard key and use it that way. Some guys, although rare, do not allow you to switch between keyboard and controller so easily. If that’s the case you’ll have to go through and essentially convert all the keyboard and mouse controls into controller inputs. Might be tricky but I have had to do that in the past. Hopefully GoT doesn’t make you do that though.
