What a great idea. Having to adjust flashing, etc because they are beams has driven me crazy. This is fantastic. I'm having a problem that I can't work out, and I've used ArchiCAD since 1997. I've taken a couple of complex profiles (one eave flash and one gable flash) and made them available for rails. I went to the railing setting, selected the custom profile option and placed my gable flashing. It was perfect. The problem is that it now treats every subsequent rail as though I've selected the gable flashing. Even though it clearly indicates the eave flashing, and shows the correct preview in the window, the profile it applies in the model is the gable flash profile. I can't even get it to apply a standard profile. I've quit and restarted. No joy. AC 25, Mac OS. Thank you for these great videos and tips, and thank you for any help you may be able to offer here.

Fantastic method! This series has actually opened my eyes to a LOT, I had no idea the surfacer tool was so much better these days. The tile/shingles version of it is quite usable now for instance. Do you have any issues with the projection settings in plan view when using the railing tool with profiles? I tended to find it lacks the beam’s ability to show as symbolic or projected? Good catch with the ability to delete elements in the edit mode, I guess that would also be useful for setting node cutbacks where the end and start condition need different insets. Are your flashing profiles based on a manufacturer’s presets?
@CONTRABIM4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jamie. Thanks for the comment! Yes the surfacer seems to work pretty well, I wish there were more options with the shingles/tiles for changing geometry but it's ok for now. Yes railings are a bit trickier in 2D to get the right projection, but playing around with it I think you can get similar representation to a beam. Flashing profiles I've worked up from previous project details, no specific manufacturer but can easily be adjusted to fit one! thanks!

Works great thanks! One question. I want to make a different end component. So I want to put my own end into the toprail end component library to choose from. But I can not find a way how to put something in there. Only the ones made by Archicad.
@CONTRABIM3 жыл бұрын
That is a great question. To be honest I'm not sure it's possible to save a custom node-ends component, but you can save a custom object for use as a node-post. This might be a workaround to get it to function how you'd like it to. Otherwise perhaps the complex profile option or one of the default end nodes can get close for you? Be interested to see what exactly you're trying to setup here

@@CONTRABIM We are making a thatched roof and the ridge has a certain shape we want to model. See the following links for an example: www.klaasnorg.nl/downloads/vorst01.jpg And the way we made it in Archicad: www.klaasnorg.nl/downloads/vorst02.png and www.klaasnorg.nl/downloads/vorst03.png The end of the ridge we have to place separate. But we want to make it into the railing

@@Kamiklaasie Very cool, thanks for sharing. It looks like that end cap can be made using the "Rail End 24", and selecting the "Profile Round Ending" option. By playing with the dimensions, I was able to create a quarter sphere shape that looks very close to your image2. Maybe this is what you already did from your images?

@@CONTRABIM thanks for your reply! It really helped. I tried Rail End 24 now and it is working! It doesn't completely match with the ridge but it is good enough for us to use. See the end result below: www.klaasnorg.nl/downloads/vorst04.jpg www.klaasnorg.nl/downloads/vorst05.jpg Many thanks from the Netherlands

@@Kamiklaasie Nice work! Yes the profiles are slightly different, maybe putting one of the seam elements at the joint would conceal...Awesome to see it's working for you now! Thanks for sharing

Need to try this, also finding the right balance between perfect 3D model and required deliverables it's critical in the real world. Does space-click work too with roofs?
@CONTRABIM4 жыл бұрын
Hi Claudio, thanks for the message! Yes I agree having a balance between the two is key. Going through the series of videos, the first one really gets us there on all the necessary takeoffs with most simplified geometry and quickest time, but adding the detail for visualization is nice too if you have time. The space-click magic wand tool does work with roofs, but it's going to follow the entire perimeter, so in this case if you have different flashings on each edge, you'll want to do 1 by 1. Thanks!

First of all, great video mate and thanks for you timeand make these videos. I was wondering where I can find these types of flashing that you are using? I've been trying to find it and I haven't been able to find them. If you can give me some advice where to find it I would appreciate it. Thanks again for your time. Cheers.

I've been meaning to post these profiles to the the blog. I'll do so this week and let you know when they are up to download. I searched online to find these profiles which are pretty standard especially with sheet metal roofing types.

@@CONTRABIM Did you ever posted those flashing objects? Thanks

I usually use a gdl object for my flashings but the railing option looks pretty tempting! My problem with the flashings is that I have to include, in the quantity takeoff list, drawings with each individual profile, and I usually do that by manually inserting images in excel in the corresponding row for every flashing! Now, I know that you can also do that in ArchiCAD automatically, but I need the drawings to be at a shop drawing level with dimensions and all! Besides that, I usually have multiple variations for the same flashing and I don't want to have the same profile drawing repeating over and over, so, for this instance I merge multiple cells in excel and place my drawing in the merged cells! I was wandering If you have a better way of doing this!
@CONTRABIM3 жыл бұрын
Great comment, sorry for my slow reply! So where are you creating your shop drawing level of detail with dimensions? In Archicad as well right? On a worksheet or detail? If you need to fully dimension out each profile, why not just do that in Archicad and identify Flashing Types in your details, and then for the quantity just tag your 3d model elements so they relate your lengths? Output a layout with both details, schedule of lengths by type, and whatever 2d/3d views you want for an all inclusive drawing, fed from the model? There's a lot of ways to approach this and would be interested in getting other thoughts??

It would be quite useful if you did a video how to create these flashings from scratch. Thanks in advance.
