How to Modify INF File for nVidia Driver Installation

Today we will modifying the Nvidia driver INF file so we can install our new RTX 3000 MXM GPU in my laptop. Since the GPU was never officially available in this laptop, the INF does not have the required hardware ID to install. We will get around this by modifying the INF.

This allowed me to modify the stock drivers for GT640 desktop GPU (v474.64) to work on my GT650M (which only has version 425.31 or something and is no longer supported by Nvidia). I needed newer drivers for OBS (since the old ones didn't support the new version of Nvenc) and they worked great. I selected GT640 as the template and then added my GT650M info. I wasn't able to get the newest drivers working but 474.64 is new enough that it has OBS support.

It was "microsoft basic adapter" and my image was shaking like crazy. I wonder if device ID having 8 zeros is ok. And also my gpu under load clocks at 200 MHz. Idk how to fix it

It is recommended to modify latest supported driver for your hardware. 700M series uses a older driver and from my testing the newer driver does not do well with older GPUs added through inf mod

Hello, I have an issue. Trying to upgrade my Clevo P750TM1-G to 3080 mxm from a 2070. After downloading the latest driver and opening the INF file, the id for the laptop version of the 3080 (Device ID 249C) isn't even included. It only shows desktop 3080 variants. Confirmed they are desktop only by referring their IDs to Nvidia's device ID appendix.

Make sure you are editing the correct inf file. I do have a newer video on how to do this using nvcleaninstall and it’s much easier

Well guided tutorial. Unfortunately I get a nvidia failed to install driver error. GPU is a Quadro RTX3000. Tried older and newer drivers following your instructions but no joy. So close to get it running! Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Machine is a Dell Precision 7530 on windows 10.

@@cs.studios Yes, I have only Intel graphics showing on Device Manager. I'm supposed to hate a GTX 930 but for some reason it doesn't detect it no matter what I do. I tried modifying .inf file with Intel graphics and it just gives of a driver install failure like the first person said.

Is it possible to see all the files in the "NVIDIA Driver application" File so can modify the INF file directly, instead of trying to overwrite the file while it's installing, modern NVME drivers are really fast these days & can be hit or miss.

In my case it completes the installation, but as soon as I restart the computer and enter the device manager, the message with the error (code 43) appears. And the Nvidia control panel does not appear. I use the GT 630 from Zotac.

Try a different section. Actually if you have a gt 630 is it still kepler? They just released a new driver for kepler. You can also try nvcleaninstall

If the intel gpu is also visible in device manager at the same time as nvidia gpu then we cannot do anything as the igpu controls output. dGPU just provides the horsepower

@@cs.studios its an alienware m17x r4. I bought a gtx 980m off ebay after reading other people have upgraded successfully. However, the card is not being detected in the bios. I checked my old card, and with all the drivers uninstalled, the microsoft basic display does show up. Ive spent several hours trying to toubleshoot, but im pretty sure the card is just dead. Join notebooktalk forums we are all registered there and itll be easier to help. You need unlocked bios and might need to select SG graphics mode depending on whether your gpu is g-sync or non g-sync model

There’s nothing to solve. You have a asus with 820M. All you need to do is download the official driver from nvidias website for 820m and it’ll install. This video is for people who upgrades their original mxm gpu to a unsupported one which would require driver inf mod.

It depends. Sometimes you get a code 43 error. You’ll have to modify inf using gpu that is closest to the one you want to use

@@thecesartes usei esse metodo sim. Só q primeiro eu instalei o driver chines q o vendedor mandou, e pra fazer isso, primeiro tem q reiniciar no modo de nao imposição de assinatura de driver. Instala o 1o arquivo de instalação, dai reinicia normal e instala o segundo arquivo do driver chines. Ai fica o driver laptop 3060m 512.15 q é o chines. Ah e tem q desabilitar o windows defender antes de instalar o driver chinês pq senão ele acusa problema. Não tem virus, ja instalei antes e continuou norm a maquina depois. Instada a versao chinesa, ai reiniciei no modo sem assinatura novamente e segui esse tutorial ai. A placa no txt não tem "m", é apenas rtx 3060. Ai tinha uma referencia 2024 ou algo assim, e a versão do chines era 2520, entao substituí tudo w era 2024 por 2520(3 lugares no txt). Dai, qdo ta 70% na instalação do driver vc cola o arquivo editado sobrepondo o original e ele vai permitir a instalação igual mostra no tutorial, pede pra i stalar mesmo sem assinatura, depois q aceitou ja era, ta oficial. Só q não sei se precisa repetir isso quando vai instalar outra versão mais nova original.mesmo assim, pelo preço bem menor(1240) valeu a pena demais e o desempenho top.
