How to Modify Your Sponge Filter to Create Smaller Bubbles

I did this mod in my betta 5-gallon tank. It worked wonderfully. My air stone had a long tip so I shortened it a bit to fit in to the chamber. Other than that, it worked perfectly. I will use this every time now. It cut way down on noise, the bubbles are smaller so my betta loves playing in them, and water isn't pushing hard around the tank like it did with the bigger bubbles. Thanks for the video. Did the first method with the air stone as far down as it would go in the tube. No more gurgling and more of a soda can "fizz" sound now. Much quieter. Thank you!!

Thank you for the video, I was able to follow your instruction and add the airstone in the sponge filter which made it so much quieter and the bubbles smaller, less disturbance in the tank :)

Thanks for the post. Was thinking of doing this. For taller filters, best to get air stone down as far as possible for better draw. Gluing to top method might not be as good.

Glue isn't even necessary for method 2. If you ever need to swap the airstone out, the glue might possibly make it more difficult to replace.

I really want to do this correctly. I’ve watched your video several times and it’s very helpful, however, I wish you moved a little slower and didn’t jump from one thing to another. You move items around so quickly, I’m not sure if you’re working on the top of the filter or the bottom. I think I get it, but don’t want to ruin my filter in the process. It would take a week to order another one.

method 2, reduces the efficiency because the air isnt getting to the bottom of the lift tube. I would not recommend it.

I just bought two corner mini sponge filters for my shrimp tank and the bubbles we’re massive yet there was not open space to put an air stone! Nice video for a modification! Appreciate it

I have corner mini sponge filter and I just took the center piece and cut out the center part like he shows, attached airstone directly in the top ( didn’t have to glue it. It fit perfect) and it worked great. Tubing plugs into the top just as if you were using it normally.

You may not like the huge bubbles create so much surface agitation but surface agitation is actually a really good thing it's aids in gas exchange and oxygenates the water more and in return actually benefits your fish a great deal more jmo tho

Just did this with my mini sponge filter as I was annoyed about how much water disturbance the filter created with the massive bubbles. I have a betta and he really didn't like how choppy the top of the tank was due to the filter bubbles. Followed the first method and 5 mins later I have a much happier fish.

A piece of filter floss would work as well then touch don’t need to cut anything 🎉

Method 2 is fine it is no different then having a low flow power head on the top of it. I can be a problem for larger taller filters. Thanks for pointing that out.

its weird, back in the 90s all the air sponges i used came with air stones. Then I got out of the hobby and back in, and sponge filters didnt have em anymore

Can make it even better By cutting the bottom piece out and getting that stone ALL the way down to the bottom

1st all you had to do was cut the little down tube and attach the air stone with some tubing to it instead of cutting or breaking anything off. 2nd gluing that air stone like that is a Bad idea cause once that air stone gets clogged you can't get it off without destroying that plastic piece you glued it to.
