Went dyeing with natural colours, mordanting is the most important process, it helps the colour to bond with the fibre, so you will have long-lasting colours.
In this video, I'm going to explain an easy technique to mordant cellulose fabric at home.

*Hi everyone!* 🌿🌿 I hope you all find this video useful. Mordanting the fabric is an important step to obtain long-lasting colour. In this video, I used Potassium alum to mordant the cellulose fabric, because is easy to find online, but a better result can be obtained when using _aluminium acetate_ . Check my blog to learn how to mordant cellulose fabric with Aluminium acetate. www.casacaribe.art/post/how-to-mordant-cellulose-fibres-for-natural-dye Kind regards, Laura E.

Hi! Thank you for watching :) you can use the fabric after leaving soak for one hour, I like to leave it overnight to make sure all the mordant is attached to the fibre. but if you boil for one hour the fabric is ready to use and you will still get a great result.

Greetings, At the end of the video, you say that we should wash the fabrics before we add coloring agents. I am doing an Eco-print with flowers and leaves, so after I let the Mordant fabric dry in the wind I should wash the fabric out with clean water? I do not use any detergent, correct? Thanks! ZB

Gracias 🙂
@CasaCaribe
@CasaCaribe Жыл бұрын

@CasaCaribe
@CasaCaribe 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Srivalli, Happy birthday! 🎉 I'm sorry for the late response I was away for the holidays. If you want to dye a satin fabric, first make sure that the fabric is made from a natural fibre, normally satin fabric is made from silk, but sometimes is made with synthetic fibres. If the fabric is made from silk you will have to use potassium alum at 15% of the Weight Of Fabric and the process is the following: -Fill a pot with water at 60C, always leave room for the fabric to move freely -add the potassium alum and stir -put the fabric inside and stir -let the fabric soak the potassium alum for 1 hour ( don't reheat the water) -finally, rinse the fabric with fresh water Now the fabric is ready to dye. If you have any questions please write to me at casacaribeitalia@gmail.com Have a nice day! 😉

How do we measure how much alum to put on the water ?? And after we rinse fabric with clean water do we use fabric for wet or dry for coloring
@CasaCaribe
@CasaCaribe 2 жыл бұрын
HI! 😊 The amount of alum that you need to put in the pot depends on the weight of your dye fabric; I normally use 10% of the weight of the fabric in alum. After you rinse the fabric with clean water, you then use the fabric wet to apply the colouring. If the fabric is dry the colour will not get absorbed evenly and some stains will remain in the fabric; so its better to colour the fabric when wet.

It's very informative video. Thank you for sharing. Just wondering doesn't alum tear off the fabric if left for such long time? Doesn't it affect the life of fabric or yarn?
@CasaCaribe
@CasaCaribe 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Meghna 💚 thank you so much for your comment; it makes me happy that you find my video informative. Alum does not wear of damage the fabric if you let it soak for a long time. Normally, I let the fabric soak for 24 hours so that the fibre can absorb all the alum. If you are using wool, I do recommend adding cream of tartar when applying the mordant; this will help to maintain the softness of the fibre.

Hi, unfortunately, no, vinegar is not a mordant agent, you can use vinegar mixed with ferrous sulphate to make ferrous acetate, but vinegar alone will not help the dye to bond with the fibre. ☺

Hello Alina :) Thank you so much for your comment 💚 When using copper sulphate I recommend using 2% of copper and 5% dilute acetic acid (this enable the copper to be easily absorbed by the fibre)

Hi! Yes, I know it sounds weird but is better to lightly wash the fabric after mordanting. we do this to remove any excess mordant that did not attach to the fabric; the bond between the fibre and the mordant is really strong it will not be broken after washing the fabric. @CasaCaribe
@CasaCaribe Жыл бұрын
Hi, yes, you can use natural dyes on silk, the results are even more beautiful, and you will get brighter colours, but with silk, the mordanting process is different, on my website you can find the explanation: www.casacaribe.art/post/how-to-mordant-animal-fibres-for-natural-dye-proteinic-fibres... with silk try to keep the temperature lower than with wool, so the silk doesn't lose the shiness 😊 for georgette and organza make sure they are made with natural fibers.
