I didn't know about machine tools slide on surface - I'll give it a go - thank you! Try this idea - after you duplicate the object, now add a subsurf of 1 onto the duplicated object, then when you snap to that object with the CTRL snap-to-face trick it will be snapping to a smoothly interpolated surface topology... and results in better smooth rendering. I never thought of doing it that way before - but I just tried it now and it works better than all the other methods.

Great tip. 👌🏼 Makes total sense but I hadn't considered it.

fun working together. @@ArtisansofVaul I never thought of duplicating the object underneath.

the amount of pain you saved me from, in the future, with that shift-7 is... remarkable. Of course the rest is also pretty cool, although more or less something I personally had encountered for one reason or another. Keep up the great work!!

That's awesome to hear 😁 I have to say when I found the shift 7 trick (but mistake) it took me a bit to realise what I had done and why it was so handy but in the same way I could see how helpful it was going to be 👍🏻

Another great video! When you duplicated the sphere, I thought you were going to apply a shrink wrap modifier and force the displaced vertex to follow the duplicated surface. I totally forgot about the face snapping option. I'll chalk it up as "It's Friday, and I'm tired." Love Machin3Tools! So many features I have yet to play around with!

To be fair thay would totally work and if you wanted to move a lot of points it would probably be the more sensible choice. But for mixing just one vertex this would be slightly faster. One of the great examples of "maybe ways to get the same result" in Blender

@@ArtisansofVaul Since the surface slide option is a toggle that stays on until you toggle it off, you could technically keep it on to do multiple vertex repositioning and just toggle it off in the end. Either way would work :)

I recommend that the copy of the sphere be applied with subdivision, so that when shrinkwrap and/or snap to its faces, you have more definition

👍🏻 Cheers. There are probably a few more out there. Someone mentioned using a shrink-wrap in the same way I use the snapping which is a great call if you want to move a lot of points.

More amazing tips! One more i use for if i do a lot of adding/moving points or faces (even retooo) to any curve or complex shape is to actually just use srink wrap on a copy of the original to fix any local offset issues. Though Your various methods are much faster for small edits.. very nice.
@ArtisansofVaul

Totally agree. If this was for anything more complicated or for multiple points I think a shrink-wrap would be the way to go for sure. 👍🏻👌🏼

Works with 1,3, In the control variants as well.. on points and edges too.. or, eg .. any three points to define a plane.

Once I unlearned my habit of "Everything must be modeled as one connected mesh", I've had a much easier time of things. Usually I'll build complex shapes as separate edges and use either "Weld Edges to Faces" or "Knife Project" to sort of "edge boolean" them onto the surface. It skips a lot of the hassle and overhead of dealing with genuine booleans.
@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul 7 ай бұрын
As I 3D print I personally wouldn't go near that as I want the booleans. But if that works for you and your purposes thats awesome 👌🏼👍🏻

Quick unrelated question. If I am working with imported STL files and then Save the Blender as a New Blender file, Does it matter what I do with the original STL can I move its directory or delete it without having problems with my blender file, or are the STL once imported stored within the Saved Blender file.
@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul 7 ай бұрын
That's a good question. I'm pretty sure from that point it's saved as geometry within the file so you shouldn't have an issue at all.

@ArrowTech374 Ahhh.... That's the quadsphere that gets added as an option if you have Machin3 Tools: blendermarket.com/products/machin3tools/?ref=834 If you don't want to get an addon (I would REALLY recommend Machin3 Tools as it does SO much) then once you have subdivided your cube add a cast modifier set to sphere and put the value to 1 👍🏻
