What's the purpose of creating a hump on the flat? Why not just stop where the taper ends?

That’s a really good question. It’s actually quite hard to just fill in the sunken seam, in theory you should be able to fill in that 1/8” valley and maybe for some jobs that’s okay, but because mud has so much moisture in it your mud is going to shrink at uneven rates, so you’d probably notice that transition between mud and the edge where the tapered drywall begins

Adding colored powder into your mud makes it less sticky. Do not do this at all unless yout just doing touch ups. Your mud will litterally just flake off the wall
